A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Andy Burnham always reminds me of that quote in the Thick of It.
He looks like the manager of an organic wine bar.

Ohhh, is that the sound of knives being sharpened in the dark?

Hyperobject · 24/01/2026 18:50

Happy days!

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 19:07

Andy Burnham:-

"My role in returning would be to use my experience to help it go further and faster, as well as communicate the difference it is making. I would be there to support the work of the Government, not undermine it, and I have passed on this assurance to the Prime Minister".

Yeah right Andy, I believe you 🤥🤣

😬 meanwhile Starmer is very much like that cartoon in the opening post. Sweating and running.

farther and faster?! That sounds worrying.

I don't know much about Burnham - I suppose I better look it up.

or for peace of mind, I should probably not look it up....

Andy Burham central player in the
'the biggest act of privatisation ever seen in the NHS'

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2012/oct/03/private-contracts-signed-nhs-privatisation

He also dithered massively over Hillsborough when in power and only took action when his speech Anfield was disrupted by chanting.

To misquote Tony Benn, AB is a weathervane politician.

Hundreds of contracts signed in 'biggest ever act of NHS privatisation'

Labour says private contracts worth a quarter of a billion pounds have been signed this week

I wouldn't bother looking him up Emerald. He's another shapeshifter who couldn't be bothered doing the hard yards in opposition. His leftism is quite a recent persona.

Burnham is making some very big assumptions. He may well end up with a very eggy face.

EmeraldRoulette · 24/01/2026 19:47

@TheNuthatch I don't think I will bother

I like to think of shapeshifters as being mythical creatures, I don't want to think of it like a politician 😂

Burnham is on a good salary as Mayor. If he can't win the seat, then what? And what if they don't get a Labour mayor? Labour will be done for decades. Maybe they already are. It all sounds a bit mad to me.

that would probably be my popcorn moment. I don't know anything about the area though.

redange · 24/01/2026 20:11

I think Nick Buckley will have a great chance of becoming Manchester Mayor. At the last Mayoral Election, Nick Buckley came third on 7.6% bear in mind Burnham got 63.4% of the vote and Nick Buckley stood for Reform in May 2024. Nick Buckley is likely to stand on his own this time, meaning he has the opportunity to attract 'Non Reform voters' as well . Nick Buckley has a great backstory regarding working firstly in Manchester Council, then in setting up a charity that reduced homeless people on the streets of Manchester. He, was greatly appreciated for his 'Charity Work' until it become apparent he was no fan of the Labour Party or the 'Politburo' nature of Manchester Council, hence was removed from his own Charity and publicly demeaned by the Council.

AnnasFangs · 24/01/2026 20:16

Buckley is a member of Advance UK, so probably would stand under that party rather than as an independent?

PronounssheRa · 24/01/2026 20:20

Despite my post above, Burnham is a much better communicator than starmer, he will i suspect care more about domestic issues than starmer does (I've always had the impression domestic stuff bores him) and with any luck whoever is pulling starmers strings won't be pulling Burnhams.

Still untrustworthy on womens rights though. His last musings were in favour of self ID, TWAW, simplifying gender recognition etc.

redange · 24/01/2026 20:22

Actually Buckley was an independent in 2024 . I did not know until I read Wikipedia that Nick Buckley had joined Advance UK . Must be recently...

He is a better communicator than Starmer. He's also proper Labour, rather than the current bunch of champagne socialists who stay within the M25, and only visit Merseyside for conference.

I am shocked at how many supposedly Labour supporters don't know who Burnham is. I've been chatting on another platform (sorry) and I've just had to explain it to someone who claims to be a hardcore Labour voter. She had no idea that Burnham is a former cabinet minister ffs. Just goes to show how far Labour have drifted from their roots.

Depends on the candidates, but I doubt GM will elect a Labour candidate in the current climate. I have never voted in the mayoral elections as Burnham is always nailed on. I will vote this time if given the opportunity.

We do have nice yellow buses with bees on them. 😂 Thanks for those Andy.

Apparently, Gary (take those flags down) Neville wants to run as the Labour Candidate for GTR Manchester 'Mayor' !

He of course, who just managed to walking in the Lake District when by coincidence the Prime Minister had decided to travel 300 Miles for a nice walk in the Country .....

I haven’t kept up with the thread, so apologies if already posted by others, but this is surely the end of Starmer.

If the NEC blocks Burnham there’ll be Labour civil war.

If the NEC doesn’t block Burnham and he stands but loses to (probably) Reform, Starmer’s gone, quickly, because Labour can’t even hold Denton FFS.

If the NEC doesn’t block Burnham and he wins, and becomes a leader in waiting on the backbenches, the agitation to get rid of the incompetent, dishonest and useless Starmer will be overwhelming and put into effect very soon.

Yes I think so and those that backed Burnham today know it too.

What will happen to Rachel R. Do she and Andy have a good relationship?
