A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

Just totting up the total votes in council by-elections held in England so far in 2026, just 7 elections but in a mix of places

Reform 28.5.%
Conservatives 20.3.%
Greens 19.8%
Labour 15.1%
Lib Dems 14.0%
Others 2.3.%

pretty similar to the various recent national surveys.

Sir Lindsay Hoyle, the Speaker of the House of Commons, has joined the backlash at Labour's proposed delay to local elections for millions of people, it has been revealed.

In a leaked email, Sir Lindsay expressed his personal view that council contests in May this year 'should take place'.

'I do not believe in cancelling elections,' the Speaker, who is also MP for Chorley in Lancashire, added.

Good

Apparently, the Telegraph are reporting that the Chagos deal has been pulled. Sorry, I don't have any details.

Great news for the chagossians. Bad news for China. I'm okay with that.

Wow after all the noise on it had to go ahead from various quarters.

Sorry for dropping a link and running, was making dinner. I'll just never understand why they pushed on with this Chagos carry on. The poor Chagossians, their options counted for nought, they were just thrown around in the geopolitical wind but I'm glad they got the outcome they wanted.

No worries, thank you for doing that

I can't access the Telegraph anyway but unusually, I heard about it on the radio - very rarely listen to radio and I was actually just checking that mine still works 😂 - scrolling past channels and heard that. Then I had to make a phone call so I just popped that information on here with nothing at all to back it up so sorry about that - I just thought that maybe people might like to go and investigate

Funny how we think of this thread even when we're running around busily! (I don't think that's a word, or maybe I just created one)

I don't understand what is behind Chagos. As I said before, it made me think of the song "the man who sold the world". There absolutely must be something in it somewhere, otherwise why would anyone even think of doing it? Why would it occur to them?

And then we arrive back at... Starmer & China.

I didn't read Trump's speech at WEF but I gather he told them what he thought of them. Which is good, if true.

comments about military - not good - but again I haven't actually heard them.

Apparently starting to kick off in Iran UK sending 12 Typhoon jets to Middle East. All European/ American Planes cancelling flights to Israel /Middle East . Israel expecting strike from Iran . Iran calling Strike the 'Final Battle'

Pacificsunshine · 23/01/2026 22:52

I’m amazed we are sending jets, when Trump is insulting all service people who died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Can't find any info in the media. Twitter isn't trending. Guess we'll know by morning what's happening.

Latest I’ve heard is that Burnham is hoping Starmer/NEC stop him from running so he avoids losing, keeos his Mayoral sinecure and salary but can point to Starmer’s’ weakness and contribute to gather his supporters.
Starmer’s best gamble is probably to let him stand and hope he loses…

And if he goes for it then apparently we'll know tomorrow if he'll be allowed to stand. 🍿🍿

TheNuthatch · 24/01/2026 09:56

Morning 😁

That cartoon made me laugh @DameProfessorIDareSay 😂

So pleased that the Chagos deal is faltering. Fingers crossed 🤞.
I needed to stay off the Internet yesterday, too angry about Trump.

It all seems quite rushed with Burnham. I wonder if Labour are pushing for an early by election to avoid it happening on the same day as the locals?

Upstartled · 24/01/2026 10:08

I think the speed is the labour machine trying to unsettle Burnham into backing down.

This made me laugh...Lammy has said he wouldn't give Burnham any advice - and then went on to say 1) parties that air their dirty laundry are a turnoff for the public 2) that things are precarious because Labour are already trailing Farage in the polls 3) a change of leadership would likely trigger a general election.

Lammy seems to have the same playbook of not giving advice as my mil.
