A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. 💙 🩵

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

I'd vote Reform to keep Labour out as well, although where I live that's not on the table anyway.

EasternStandard · 19/01/2026 14:09

Upstartled · 19/01/2026 12:26

I'm happy to rub alongside people who would and would not countenance a vote for reform and listen to their opinions. As has been stated again again, this is a board for those who hate Labour - plenty of breadth of opinion under that umbrella. And yet this board never descends into character assassination. It must be quite odd for some to see.

Same and totally agree about a few who attempt that on here, entirely tedious and makes me so glad for this thread.

@TheNuthatch I’m avoiding the news too, I usually do but the Greenland stuff is people ramping up and I don’t have the bandwidth for it.

Januaryescape · 19/01/2026 14:28

Same, I don’t think it’s impossible at this stage for the tories and reform to come up with a plan that boosts growth and not solely by state spending.

the trade war cage rattling is terrifying…

LupaMoonhowl · 19/01/2026 14:34

AnnasFangs · 19/01/2026 11:31

I agree. Plenty of Tory voters despise Farage and Reform. And I think a lot don't take kindly to disloyalty.

But he will pick disillusioned Labour supporters too -plenty of those who are still working are incandescent at the way this government despised them and prioritises the workshy and migrants.

justasking111 · 19/01/2026 14:52

Someone's comment made me laugh today. STARMER spoke to the nation at 9.15am. So that rules out anyone employed earning a crust from hearing it. So his remarks aren't aimed at the employed 😄😄

justasking111 · 19/01/2026 14:54

I was asleep, dozing until lunch after a bad night with this lurgy. I too don't have the bandwidth to form coherent opinions.

justasking111 · 19/01/2026 14:58

TheNuthatch · 19/01/2026 13:51

Lib Dems, Greens and Plaid, aka most of the left are all calling on Starmer to take a harder line against Trump.

I heard an estimate (details are skant) that these tariffs could cost the UK economy £6bn a year!

I'm avoiding all news for the rest of the day to stop my head exploding.

Plaid are so puffed up because of one poll giving them Wales. The leader can't shut up about independence now 🙈

Independence? Oh my word. A glutton for punishment there. Good luck to them.

Apols just realised you’re in Wales, you don’t deserve their ramblings

justasking111 · 19/01/2026 15:03

Anyone else noticed plaid leader is the spit of comic Lee Evans?

Yes! I wrote the same in the Kemi thread at the weekend. Spitting image!

Does anyone just read stuff and think eugh. My current one is anyone who seems relieved Iranians didn’t succeed. Just lower than low, can only think of karma on that score.

Just eugh at people sometimes.

Yes, all the time on MN. I had to stop reading one of the Iran threads. They don't give a F about human rights.
As JK Rowling said, they revealed themselves.

Some of the posts I've read recently are off the charts, not just on Iran.

Yep same. Just eugh at all of that. Repugnant.

TheNuthatch · 19/01/2026 20:07

TG for this thread. I'd be long gone from MN without you lot.
No wonder so many decent posters are leaving.

Very much so. The lack of support for the protesting Iranians is bizarre. Also the desire for Maduro to be freed. That man was an absolute monster.
I think there’s this attitude that left wing regimes can’t be that bad because…well…they’re left wing - no matter that they have appalling human rights records and their citizens lives are hellish.
I also read on here furious objections to anyone going to Dubai yet praise for trips to Cuba. “Oh the Cubans are so poor but they are so happy and don’t want a consumerist society”.

EmeraldRoulette · 19/01/2026 21:25

This is usually the only political thread I'm on

I posted last night on one where I thought a genuine question was being asked. Turns out it wasn't, or maybe the OP was genuine and it got hijacked.

I haven't really looked at news today.

The only thing I have seen is the Trans Policy post - tbh the thing that made my eyes come out on stalks was the massive contribution to the pension! I thought public sector pensions were less generous than they used to be! That's 28%+!!!

(the post itself does not surprise me, the delays with the Supreme Court clarification ruling new guidance thingy were clearly happening because they don't like it and wish to undo IMHO).

Sorry if I'm repeating myself but I said to mum yesterday, I think Starmer's silence on the Chinese embassy is going to be because he thinks that Canada will ally with China and there will be a whole group of people taking sides and he wants to side with them.

Maybe I'm nuts, I'm not about to bet my savings on it, but that's what I think at the moment. (I doubt the bookies are running a sweepstake on it anyway 😂)

TheNuthatch · 20/01/2026 08:47

You're not missing anything on the other political threads @EmeraldRoulette. They all turn into anti Reform rants, whatever the thread title.
Agree with your other points.
On the Chinese embassy, I believe there is likely to be a lengthy court battle if the govt approves it. Iirc, both Reform and the Conservatives have said they will scrap it, so hopefully it will never happen.

Starmer has had a change of heart and agreed to launch a consultation on banning social media for under 16s. Dozens of Labour MPs were threatening to vote for the Conservative ammendment. Another win for Kemi.

Oof, Trump has written a scathing post on TS about Chagos, calling it 'an act of great stupidity'.

It was that for sure. Wonder if he’ll u turn on Chagos now.

I recall posters being jubilant Trump backed the Chagos deal at that visit.

Januaryescape · 20/01/2026 10:00

Great news on SM and the consultation. KS does seem so flat footed on this. I’m sure parents who really want their kids on SM will still be avlr
to setup adult accounts.

peacefulpeach · 20/01/2026 10:25

The uk government should ban smart phones and social media for U16s full stop. Obv there’d be difficulties / workarounds but on the whole it would only be a good thing. The internet and smart phones are messing up children’s minds and sometimes, lives.

I can’t believe Starmer is dilly dallying on this. Or perhaps I can. He ignores grooming gangs after all.

TheNuthatch · 20/01/2026 10:39

I'm not sure why Starmer was/is so against banning sm for kids. Ed Balls mentioned it on PC and couldn't understand Starmer's comments against it.

Politico are reporting that Reform's Labour defection has been delayed until further notice. Maybe they are waiting for a quieter news day.

Upstartled · 20/01/2026 11:06

Which of the social media apps are on the hook here, is it just tiktok/Snapchat/insta or does it include WhatsApp and YouTube?

InterestQ · 20/01/2026 11:24

Perhaps Starmer’s own children harangue him over breakfast. “I can’t live without Snapchat”.

I don’t think Trump will use military tactics to take Greenland. It’s overkill. He can do what he likes there to a greater extent anyway. The Danish don’t mind and nor do the Greenlanders. He wants their resources. I’m bored of it. Go and rescue the Iranian people if you’re going to interfere to this level in other countries instead of looking to your own problems. Same goes for Starmer.
