Don Snoreleone trying to stay awake long enough to bring all his racist dreams to fruition. So when can we bring about his personal "civilisational erasure”?

Not that it would happen, but I’d love to see Greenlanders vote to become part of Canada. Just to see the look on 🍑🌮 face.

Why would it not happen ?

Britain has a unique relationship with the Scandiwegian countries. after all, we're half Vikings ourselves.

Lalgarh · 07/01/2026 11:35

There was some proviso from the last time America tried to nab Greenland (it's not new) that the UK actually has first refusal on whether to govern. Think I heard it on broadcasting house ages ago

You'd think the actual native Greenland people would have their say but what do I know.

I say “would never happen” on the basis that I don’t think there will ever be such a vote on choosing to join another country. If there is ever a vote it will be for full independence, or not.

If it was a straight up - pick between the USA and Canada, then yes I totally believe they’d go with Canada.

I can't help but recall a Homeland plot point where Brody had to hack into VPOTUS pacemaker ....

MrTiddlesTheCat · 07/01/2026 12:18

I read earlier that all this rhetoric about military action against Greenland is just hot air. That it would be catastrophic for the US, because it would instantly end all co-operation from other NATO countries. And the US may have the strongest arsenal but their control over the arctic and north atlantic is dependent on their allies. They will be in a mych weaker position if they lose their european airbases and canadian monitoring stations.

I'm a lurker and hugely grateful to all the posters who contribute to these threads.
But im so alarmed to have heard the interview on the World at One with Andre Federov (not sure about the spelling here) which suggests there is now increased danger of retaliation from Russia if US forces attempt to escalate their current actions.
How did we get here??

If it's any consolation, having spent most of the 90s shitting myself over nuclear war, I can assure you this is all Russkie bluster,.

It's an axiom of mine that if you are in a position of strength then you never need to make threats.

MannequinsArePeopleToo · 07/01/2026 13:53

To add:
I also follow Heather Cox Richardson on YT as she always seems to offer a good analysis, way better than the attention grabbing "OMG this just happened" reels which are so thin on almost everything IYSWIM.

So ironic that Trump the sycophant of Putin, who lectures Zelensky on Ukraine provoking ww3, might, by enforcement of oil sanctions in Iran (origin of the tanker if I understand) ends up antagonising Russia after all

I was pregnant at that time. Absolutely scared stiff. But yes, I take your point. Sometimes its hard to take a step back which is maybe what I need to do for a while.

I appreciate it's easier for me - I have much more behind me than ahead.

But there really are some fundamentals in life. And one is about paying the Dane geld (especially pertinent to discussions around Denmark).

I have no doubt that a lot of the political instability in the UK and US right now has been amplified by mischief. I am also in no doubt that at some point, no matter how unstable the US and UK become, it won't end well for Russia. The problem is they won't see that.

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 07/01/2026 14:21

I wish the not ending well for Russia bit- which I thoroughly agree with - would bloody well hurry up and happen. That'd shift the dynamics.

SerendipityJane · 07/01/2026 14:30

As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

The total and utter failure of the Nazis to appreciate their situation did have some unfortunate side effects.

There's real uncertainty over what will happen to Russia after Putin goes. The security services are actively war gaming scenarios

There's a real possibility it will splinter into a raft of failed fiefdoms like Chechnya. Except with Nukes

If Russia has taken as much care of it's nuclear arsenal (which ain't cheap) as it has it's regular weapons, then I really would sleep a lot better at night.

Deafnotdumb · 07/01/2026 14:45

Splintering is possible, but depending on what's left after Putin, it's more likely to be a failing state (e.g. Venuzuala or Pakistan), where there's less control over the periphery. I can see China regaining control of its lost territories that way - an agreement with their backed winner from the Moscow's courier circle that they will have carte blanche to work in those regions.

Or, apropos the Duke of Wellington on seeing his generals for Waterloo

"I can only hope the enemy is as scared by this list as I am ...."

PerkingFaintly · 07/01/2026 15:02

I'd heard a bit about Chinese ambitions regarding of Lake Baikal, but wasn't following closely. Probably I should have been.

But...

We will always be there for Nato, even if they won't be there for us,' Trump says
In the meantime, US president Donald Trump has offered his view on Nato in a lengthy post on Truth Social, saying he “doubted Nato would be there for us if we really needed them,” but insisted “we will always be there for Nato, even if they won’t be there for us.”
(Not a word on what it means given his repeated threats to take over Greenland, which is a part of a fellow Nato member, Denmark.)
Trump also took credit for pushing Nato to raise its defence spending, and claimed that “without my involvement, Russia would have all of Ukraine right now,”while pointedly criticising the Nobel committee for not giving him the Nobel peace prize (erm.).
Trump also said that “the only nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the DJT [Donald J. Trump] rebuilt USA.”
Here is the post in full:
“Remember, for all of those big NATO fans, they were at 2% GDP, and most weren’t paying their bills, UNTIL I CAME ALONG. The USA was, foolishly, paying for them! I, respectfully, got them to 5% GDP, AND THEY PAY, immediately. Everyone said that couldn’t be done, but it could, because, beyond all else, they are all my friends. Without my involvement, Russia would have ALL OF UKRAINE right now. Remember, also, I single-handedly ENDED 8 WARS, and Norway, a NATO Member, foolishly chose not to give me the Noble Peace Prize. But that doesn’t matter! What does matter is that I saved Millions of Lives. RUSSIA AND CHINA HAVE ZERO FEAR OF NATO WITHOUT THE UNITED STATES, AND I DOUBT NATO WOULD BE THERE FOR US IF WE REALLY NEEDED THEM. EVERYONE IS LUCKY THAT I REBUILT OUR MILITARY IN MY FIRST TERM, AND CONTINUE TO DO SO. We will always be there for NATO, even if they won’t be there for us. The only Nation that China and Russia fear and respect is the DJT REBUILT U.S.A. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!! President DJT”
(as reported just now in The Guardian)
