It's incomprehensible if you try to see these things are arising from within themselves.
But if you see them as being expressions of something else – viz disruptivism by disaster opportunists of various nations and kinds attempting to break down civil society and trust so they can swoop into the chaos – then it all makes perfect sense.
The internet is the perfect anonymous place to "stick the knife in the cracks and wiggle", as was said of Russia. We know the accelerationist white supremacists are busy on the same, and I'm sure there are many other players – all hidden behind the screen.
I am reminded almost constantly these days of a mob on the school playing-field shouting "Fight fight fight FIGHT", ever louder and beating their chests, until the two hapless schmucks they surround (whose mild disagreement had been blown up by their classmates) obey the order and lay into each other.
The fighters get expelled... and the mob moves onto its next target.
