So what do people think about Zohran Mamdani and the New York City mayoral race? Polar opposite to Trump - and generating hope and engagement in so many (including me).

DuncinToffee · 01/11/2025 09:58

He seems a very decent guy, hope he does well and wins.

ShockAngry

Evidently there was an Auschwitz-themed float in a Halloween parade in Pennsylvania.

The float was for a Catholic school, and to their credit the church immediately disavowed it.

Thing is, I don’t think high school kids did this entirely on their own. I’m guessing parents had to be involved.

Lots of elections to watch across the USA this coming week ....

pointythings · 01/11/2025 15:11

I reckon that isn't going to put diehard New Yorkers off any more than it did diehard Londoners.

Evenstar · 01/11/2025 15:27

@DuncinToffee I am just appalled at that carnival photo, we know the far right have glorified fascism, but how can it have gone this far? I despair of the human race 😔

logicisall · 01/11/2025 15:46

I have given up on understanding how conservative 'Christians' support Trump, simply because of his anti abortion stance. This then slips into Far Right stuff....then anti Jew. It's frightening.

PerkingFaintly · 01/11/2025 16:47

It's incomprehensible if you try to see these things are arising from within themselves.

But if you see them as being expressions of something else – viz disruptivism by disaster opportunists of various nations and kinds attempting to break down civil society and trust so they can swoop into the chaos – then it all makes perfect sense.

The internet is the perfect anonymous place to "stick the knife in the cracks and wiggle", as was said of Russia. We know the accelerationist white supremacists are busy on the same, and I'm sure there are many other players – all hidden behind the screen.

I am reminded almost constantly these days of a mob on the school playing-field shouting "Fight fight fight FIGHT", ever louder and beating their chests, until the two hapless schmucks they surround (whose mild disagreement had been blown up by their classmates) obey the order and lay into each other.

The fighters get expelled... and the mob moves onto its next target.

Thanks for the new thread!

Re the Auschwitz themed float, there's been a lot of talk lately about the Republicans no longer distancing themselves from influencers like white supremacist Nick Fuentes who was on Tucker Carlson recently. It's becoming pretty mainstream.

Case in point today.

Three Bulgarians jailed in France for a weird mixed bag of vandalism, allegedly paid by Russia. Some of it appeared to be anti-semitic, some Islamophobic, some (the Stars of David – I remember this one) could be taken either way.

The intention is to sow uncertainty and anxiety, leading to instability.

Herewith a short BBC article, and a slightly longer Newsweek one which explains more.

It's happening here too

A Catholic priest who admitted discussing bombing mosques and shooting black people in the head in neo-Nazi online chatrooms has been sentenced to a 12-month community order.

Ah, another religious leader who seems to have forgotten the idea of following in Jesus's footsteps. At least he wasn't anti semitic 😅

@Copperas As a lifelong New Yorker, no longer resident in NY, I'm excited about him. I suspect he'll find governing NY harder than he thinks, particularly as not only is the orange imbecile going to exact revenge on the city for electing him, Elise Stefanik is going to run for governor of the state pretty much solely on a platform of destroying him. And if she wins, Albany will choke off as much funding to NYC as they possibly can. Hopefully he'll assemble a good team around him - it's not like the current criminal, er, mayor, is going to be missed. I'm very disappointed in the Democratic Party for their pathetic approach in not really supporting him. He won the primary fair and square and they should be standing behind him, not to mention learning a few lessons from his campaign strategies about appealing to younger voters.

walllaw · 01/11/2025 17:23

On another note, why are so many neo nazis and white supremacists so physically repulsive? The master race indeed. Maybe it's their insides shining through.
