It’s a very good test of your values to ask yourself how you’d feel if your decision was front page news. It’s why the comms function is sometimes described as the conscience of an organisation.

That's a naive observation at best. How is that going to happen with a vulture right wing media?

bombastix · 13/11/2025 19:20

I don’t know there has always been a variant on that called the Daily Mail test, ie how happy would I be if this was on the front page of the DM?

And if it was, how would you handle it? Still good tests, particularly for Labour governments.

This one appears to have no institutional memory of press hostility towards a left wing government… yes I know not very left wing in reality, but generally anything that isn’t Blairite Labour is considered that way. You only have to look back into history to see how Labour politicians get dealt with; Benn’s a commie, Foot’s a KGB spy… lots of precedence.

This government looks cowed. Not good.

DuncinToffee · 13/11/2025 19:26

It was disappointing but the fume that followed was something else.

You mean politicians like Boris Johnson, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Baroness Michelle Mone and Nigel Farage?

How high should the standards be for Labour and how low should they be for Reform and the official opposition Conservative Party?

Because I would argue that Labour in Government has raised the standards a lot.

It's obvious that LibDems, Plaid, Green don't matter.

Who cares what the Cons and Reform do?

Its about what Starmer etc believe in, what are their core values?

Starmer et al should know the only reason he gets offered gifts is because of the position he is in, if he was Para Legal, he 'd not be getting them, therefore, in my eyes, he shouldn't take them.

I'm probably not explaining this very well.

It also doesn't say much about his intelligence.

Is this a serious post or are you being disingenuos?

Lets just say that i don't believe he should taken these.

i think your comment was completely unwarranted, i'll leave you too it and not say what i actually think of that.

You are questioning the intelligence of a former human rights defence barrister. I'll leave that there for others to make their mind up.

PandoraSocks · 13/11/2025 20:19

Come on, let's not fall out amongst ourselves.

Starmer has effed up. Let's hope lessons are learned and that Labour can pull together and get past all this.

placemats · 13/11/2025 20:46

There's not going to be a general election until 2029.
All parties fight amongst themselves.
This isn't a thread that specifically supports Labour or any other party.

Yes keep it clean and real.

SerendipityJane · 13/11/2025 20:48

Anyone seen the rather not-got-the-memo thread about someone who's moved here and likes it ?

It’s not naive. If you know there’s a vulture right wing media you take great care not to provide it with fodder. Naivety is thinking that media won’t make a meal of the slightest slip in standards. Starmer et al were fools.

Is that allowed?
i thought we all had to be weeping over copies of the Telegraph.

For a second there I read that as weeing...

Notonthestairs · 13/11/2025 21:24

That works. A contented wee.

Tempting. Very, very tempting.

Starmer and Reeves ditch Budget plan to increase income tax rates.
Chancellor explores alternative ways to raise revenue to fill fiscal hole estimated at up to £30bn.

bombastix · 13/11/2025 23:29

This is probably a credible story given it’s in the FT but confirmed Reeves has zero political nous. Just like her first budget. Drawn out, maximum political agony as ideas are floated, Labour vote declines as she does so, and then a reversal. Confidence sapping. It’s not even Truss and her moron premium. It’s more like an agony premium.

Does. It have enough substance to be absorbent?

Damnthetorpedoes · 14/11/2025 04:40

Posted in error - wrong thread.

InMySpareTime · 14/11/2025 05:58

I’m bored of the catastrophising over the budget. It’s not a u turn if it didn’t happen yet, just averting a problem. The 24 hour news cycle needs feeding and everyone wants to get the jump on it, but that’s led to loads of media speculation and fearmongering.
It mostly comes down to the fact the govt needs more money to meet the obligations it already has and to achieve anything worthwhile, but the press will criticise any decision to raise money from anyone by finding an edge case who objectively cannot afford tax hikes.
I wouldn’t want the chancellor’s job right now. If you raise taxes you’re cruel, if you don’t you’re taxing the nation’s children or stealing their inheritance. Everyone wants someone else to bear the tax burden and “the rich” is always someone a bit richer than you (whatever you earn).
I know MN is a skewed demographic because it’s got a lot of people at the most expensive point of their lives but somehow nobody is rich here despite an over representation of six figure salaries.

Notonthestairs · 14/11/2025 07:20

Nods to a new Monitor.

Ten weeks of ‘leaked’ Budget plans.
Yes, I have no doubt some of that was kite flying but a fucktonne of it was pure speculation - Reeves will tax your Hamster stuff - aimed at destabilising.

The Budget should not have been left this late - left the door wide open for exactly this crap.

Regardless you can’t make up what’s needed through loads of smaller taxes.

No, it was a genuine error.

I posted on another thread, almost at the same time.

Have a Good Friday.

Notonthestairs · 14/11/2025 07:40

The same posters that didn’t want to pay more income tax will now pretend to complain about U turns and pivot to the next rumour to angst about that.

And the same people that loved Liz Truss’s budget (and still do) will be giving out on MN.
