Yes, Sheffield- city of sanctuary- that has been, and mainly still is, a very welcoming city to all.
No one really bothered to do the hotel protest a few months back, which was heartening, very different to Chesterfield.
Council tried to stop Tenconi March but it was allowed to meet and it will March to the main asylum hotel. Counter protesters leafleted and messaged and it was set up to start at the cathedral, but only now told we can’t meet there - most won’t even know that though. We can stand in an area a street or 2 away from the hotel but no marching, or going nearer the hotel, but we like to be nearer the hotels to give the asylum seekers hope that we don’t all hate them.
Tenconi spins it very differently and as leftie Sheff council has given in, as they have a shorter protest time allocated, but I am baffled that they are allowed near the hotel at all, especially after what happened in neighbouring Rotherham - and honestly feel quite sick about it. Not comparing but just been to Krakow and did the sad and sobering visit whilst there - any, absolutely any person Nazi saluting and calling for mass deportations needs stopping strongly and should be in court imo - stop it in its tracks.
Also sad as I’m proud of Sheffield and gonna be forced to realise there’s a lot not to be proud of today 😞 - there’s also a football match in town and they have a fair few right wing supporters - hopefully they’ll stick to the footie though.
