David Blunkett is calling for a temporary suspension of the ECHR, such as the one in Germany, to stop failed asylum seekers from appealling their deportations and languishing in hotels for longer.
The narrative up until ten minutes ago was that criticism of the ECHR was a far-right, Brexit-bopping pipedream but it's clear that there is more consensus across all parties that it is a legislative weight around our ankles than the true believers would like to admit.
It won't be the first time they have had egg on their face, rallying for the government only for the wind to change - leaving them out in the cold, but the itch to paint the critics as bogeymen is just far too satisfying not to fall for it again and again. And this is why only 13% of people approve of this government.
