Labour isn't working - Thread 6

TheNuthatch · 22/08/2025 15:23

A chat thread for those who don't like this Labour government. Labour isn't working.

The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.

🤣 if only they hadn't scrapped it

It was one of the first things Starmer did when they won the election. Now his own mps are calling for its return. How embarrassing for him! Oh well, never mind 😂

It is indeed a shower of shite. They’ve managed to alienate so many groups in society. I remember like yesterday driving up the A1 and listening to the budget. Inheritance tax on family farms. At that point I was done.

Lewis Goodall was on LBC recently and suggested that inheritance tax should be hiked up to 100%. So when I die, the state can just take my home, have all the money in my bank and savings account, life insurance and all my other assets? What planet are these people on? I’d sooner spend every last penny than let the state steal it from my children.

Friendlygingercat · 23/08/2025 09:33

Tax is a legalised form of theft.

David Blunkett is calling for a temporary suspension of the ECHR, such as the one in Germany, to stop failed asylum seekers from appealling their deportations and languishing in hotels for longer.

The narrative up until ten minutes ago was that criticism of the ECHR was a far-right, Brexit-bopping pipedream but it's clear that there is more consensus across all parties that it is a legislative weight around our ankles than the true believers would like to admit.

It won't be the first time they have had egg on their face, rallying for the government only for the wind to change - leaving them out in the cold, but the itch to paint the critics as bogeymen is just far too satisfying not to fall for it again and again. And this is why only 13% of people approve of this government.

Edited

Agree, perfect analysis of how they operate. It's infuriating.
It will be interesting to see how many more come out for leaving the ECHR as the small boats figures worsen.

Also has anyone seen that from Oct if yo do a bank transfer over £800 then it will be frozen for 24 hours? It is circulating X but I can't find a newsprint article so not sure whether true or not?

I've heard that too, but it wasn't on X as I don't use it. Perhaps it's something to do with this?

Man holds a credit card and a phone with another bank card and a laptop on the table in front of him.

Bank transfers could be delayed for four days to investigate fraud

Rules allowing banks to delay payments to investigate fraud will come into force at the end of October.

Agree @MumOfManyAliases unless they put people in jail for making sure they have nothing to leave, that’s exactly what we would do too - it’s beyond a joke that this is on the table.

KnickerlessParsons · 23/08/2025 10:00

They say that every so often the children (Labour) are allowed to play and then we decide we need the grown ups (Conservatives) to come back and clear up the mess.
Tories really need to get themselves organised and electable by the next election.

Me too!
What an idiotic suggestion from LG. I have heard Labour supporters say that they don't care what happens with inheritance tax because they'll be dead when it happens.I've never understood why anyone would feel like that.

I think a lot of Labour supporters are blinded by ideology. The term ‘far-right’ is bandied about a lot, but you never hear ‘far-left’. Funny that. My husband’s view is that if they did this, then they will just make peoples’ homes into state-owned homes. If god-forbid both parents die before their children that would effectively mean both kids potentially being taken into care and the parents’ assets, family home etc, taken by the state. Evil.

Lutonsgirl · 23/08/2025 10:31

Yes..I read a comment recently that someone was just happy to have a Labour government for the next 4 years. Just that. No critical thinking at all.

This is what I worry about as a single parent, the govt taking all my worldly goods on my death and my children getting nothing. Hopefully though if Labour introduced anything like that it would be reversed by the govt we have next.

I don’t think they would get away with implementing something as extreme as this - there would be too much outcry from the public and they would make themselves unelectable for the foreseeable future.

Yes true (think they are already unelectable though so maybe they have nothing to lose)

They wouldn't get away with anything like that LG suggestion. It wouldn't survive parliament. You're right to worry though with this lot in charge.

DH and I have made an active decision to be as labour-proof as possible for the next four years. No big family spending or house moves etc. Same with our small business, just try and keep it ticking over quietly, no risks, until this period of labour batshittery is over. Self protectionism.

I'd rather bury my money in a field and leave my kids a map than let the gov take the lot when I die.

Yes I’m the same and financial adviser has advised no big changes or expenditure, advising me for the next few years to “sit tight!” I just feel constantly uneasy wondering what Labour are going to do next, it’s horrible.

I'm new to the thread ( well a few hours ago , Hello ) I remembered being berated on a general thread for commenting that are having to go from a long term relationship of many years to having to marry thanks to Starker at al for bringing in tax on pension plans ( i.e inheritance )other than married couples .
We did marry for that sole purpose ( know it's not happening til 2027 ) but for those single people , can you leave a private pension to your direct family members children , siblings niece / nephews if no children and it be tax free ?

Yep us too. Obviously got to survive DH redundancy (thanks Reeves 😡) and VAT on school fees but zero will be spent on anything else. It's very much a survival phase for next 4 years.
Had couple meetings with IFA on how best deal with everything.
1 think they suggested was setting up a Junior pension for DD so we've done that to funnel into.

Suspend ECHR to pave way for migrant deportations, Blunkett tells Starmer

What a good idea David Blunkett. He’s often been a bit of sense in his raving left loony party.

I think someone mentioned this Blunkett sense above.

Sorry I don’t know the answer but I can ask my financial adviser next week if you like ? Probably like most things financial it isn’t completely straightforward.

Hollyohara · 23/08/2025 11:35

So Labour

Who is going to fund your benefits bills now?

Who is going to prop up your state shambles?

Who is going to pay to look after all the ‘asylum seekers’?

Wealthy tax payers are leaving or putting up the barricades against your thriving grubby fingers. 🤢

It is the steepest decline in the Rich List’s 37-year history

Blunkett’s intervention is gold dust for Badenoch if she is to announce withdrawal from the ECHR. It would be very difficult for Starmer to call her extreme (or “unserious” 🙄) when one of the best known Labour figures supports suspension.

True, suspension isn’t withdrawal, but it shows that many people are in favour of at least derogation. If memory serves, Blair also said he would be willing to derogate from the ECHR after 9/11.

Yes! He has more credibility and respect from his party in his little finger than Starmer has at all. Great stuff. Come on KB take advantage.

Yep, another open goal for KB to exploit. She never seems to make the most of these opportunities though, it's frustrating to watch.

Ooo a new thread. Like a lovely new writing pad 😂. I’ve name changed. I’m bored of @absent (even though it’s a phrase from a favourite abba song).

I think Starmer’s done this ref Epping as he knows his time is running out. God knows who’ll replace him. They’re all as terrible as each other.

I shudder to think we might ger Angela Rayner if Starmer goes.
