Hello from Estella. Today has been challenging - 27 degrees all
the way and very little shade. On the plus side no massive hills and I’m in wine country 😂 so today’s photos are grapes on the vine, dead sunflowers 😂 and yet another sodding Roman bridge.
I met a young girl travelling in her own ( maybe about 24) on Day 1 who was very bright and inquisitive and who got me and a couple of other stragglers into Roncesvalles with a smile 😂 hadn’t seen her since but today she came into a cafe looking distressed, sharpishly followed by an older man ( you know where this is going) a couple of the other walkers must have clocked him because they kind of ‘protected’ her from him and as I was leaving she was saying how stupid she was but she had made her boundaries clear. Couldn’t help interrupting, not her fault, he’s an older man who should understand that he holds the power. Anyway I said I’d jab him with my walking stick if I saw him (I didn’t) and she overtook me at the very end of the day looking happier. It was a very solitary walk today in places and I think the backs of my legs are burnt. 2 days to go and then home

@Aria999 you might also need drill bits for concrete to pre-drill the hole if you are wanting screws into the wall.
@SpiritOfEdna sounds line such an adventure you are having! It really makes me miss travelling! ☺️

Had a bit of a sleep in, but am off to the races now. Coffee is ready and I need to strip beds and wash sheets.

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 30/08/2025 17:27

Good on you @SpiritOfEdna for helping protect the young woman. In my days of travelling I have had that happen to me- and have had people put me into taxis or walk me to the hotel when there has been a definite threat. I remember it well.

yep, and a hammer drill.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/08/2025 18:51

Ooooh a hammer drill! Now that sounds like you know what you're doing! 👏😁

(Googling hammer drill videos now...)😂😂😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 30/08/2025 22:14

Having a chill day at home after all the running around yesterday, which means I've done some chores and am now watching Netflix. Got baby down for a nap and Havoc is playing quietly on the deck. Had a sandwich of sliced lamb chop on warm buttered baguette and an iced caffe latte.

Beds stripped and sheets washed
Thoroughly vacuumed, including couches & moved them and vacuumed under/behind + baseboards
Cleaned two tower fans
Caught a small spider using the trusted tall cup and paper method and dropped released it off the deck.

WinterFrogs · 31/08/2025 08:48

Good morning everyone!
I am really sorry you are going through tough times with older family members @SingleThreadJoiner2 😔 My best wishes to you all. I hope you can have some nice times with DD before school starts.

My mother is down with what is hopefully just a heavy cold. It's such a weight off my mind, having her in the care home where there are duty nurses as well as carers. She's having her meals in her room at the moment. I am also grateful for modern communications as she's still able to send WhatsApp messages even though she's lost her voice.

@Mumtobabyhavoc I do enjoy how you slip in your delight at a latte and warm buttered carbs, in whatever form. Such simple pleasures ❤️ I rescued a fairly huge spider from the cat's gaze in similar fashion yesterday. It's was windy and wet outside so I'm not sure I did the poor thing any favours but I can't be having them inside when I know they are there!

Are you enjoying the trip despite the sunburn and blisters @SpiritOfEdna ? I wonder if it'll be one of those adventures best enjoyed in hindsight. Thank you for supporting that young woman, on behalf of women everywhere 🫂 I was very shocked, out with my early twenties daughter a few years ago, one evening when we were just walking along the seafront early evening on our way to the theatre. The number of men beeping their horns and catcalling from their cars was astonishing.

@Aria999 I am impressed with this talk of power drills. I would not have thought of hot drill bits either, but it's obvious now you mention it! It's lovely to 'see' you!

I must go, things to do but 👋 everyone else and I will catch up later. I am meeting some friends for coffee and a catch up which I am looking forward to. DH and I had planned to visit mum this afternoon but she's not up to visitors and doesn't want to share the germs ( and we don't want to catch them!) So we are going to cosy up and watch The Thurday Murder Club instead. We started it last night and it's gorgeous, with my favourite actors. Don't tell my mother though - she believes that watching television during the day is quite decadent unless it's tennis or cricket 😃

Hope things improve for you soon @SingleThreadJoiner2 and you manage to get things with your PIL sorted. You must just feel in limbo.
Your trip sounds amazing @SpiritOfEdna . Hope the feet are holding up. I echo what others have said, well done for looking out for the young lady. My daughter is about the same age and I always hope someone would step in and help her if it were ever necessary.
It sounds a real weight off your mind that your mum is in a care home @WinterFrogs especially when she’s under the weather. How lovely that she can still WhatsApp you and communicate. My dad no longer has a phone and I only get to see him on FaceTime when my brother visits. He finds any sort of conversation very difficult now but likes to see our faces.
Hello to everyone else and welcome back to people who have been away from the thread for a little while.
We go on holiday tomorrow for a week and also have a new carpet being laid the same day - what timing! We’ve had to move furniture already in preparation and hope to have time tomorrow to move some of it back before setting off for the airport in the evening. I want to do most of my packing today and do a few last minute jobs as our adult children will be here on and off during the time we’re away.

Peridot1 · 31/08/2025 11:18

Hello all.

Glad the girl was ok @SpiritOfEdna - great that you and other walkers were able to give her some protection. Bloody men. I know it’s not all men but it’s always men.

@SingleThreadJoiner - sounds like you are getting lots of the practical bits sorted while DH is at the hospital with FIL. It’s all such a stress though.

@Aria999 - I have done that with three mirrors in various houses - put them too high. Well DH did the drilling etc but the position was me.

Hope your mum feels better soon @WinterFrogs. Great that she can use WhatsApp. My MIL never really got into mobile phones let alone the internet and is a bit cut off as a result. She had lots of mobile phones over the years but only switched them on to take photos on them! Now she is in a nursing home it would be great to be able to call her on a mobile or message her. Although she is now so cantankerous apparently I’m not sure I want to!

Hi to everyone else!

We have had a busy few days as it was the village bbq on the green yesterday. DH is chair of parish council and was main organiser so as he can’t do any driving still I was busy picking stuff up and delivering things and helping put gazebos up and making a dessert. Turned out a great day despite the rain. We had five gazebos which was good. Taking them down at the end in the rain was a bit miserable though. I ended up driving some stuff home and getting changed into dry clothes and bringing a dry shirt back down to the pub for DH. And we stayed at the pub for dinner and way too late a night. Tired today!

With all of that going on I haven’t achieved much over the last few days but I did clear out the washing machine filter on Thursday. Satisfying and a bit disgusting but the smell around the machine is gone - thanks for the reminder to do that @SydneyCarton.

Today is a bit of a lazy one. I’ve done a bit of tidy in the kitchen. About to go for a walk. Then I might pick tomatoes and attempt to make a tomato sauce to freeze.

Have a lovely Sunday all.

SydneyCarton · 31/08/2025 17:30

@Peridot1 It’s a game changer! Agree it is disgusting although considering I had never cleaned it in about four years it was not as bad as I had been expecting. We have very hard water so it all just sort of broke off in chunks….

Your walk sounds amazing @SpiritOfEdna . I’ve been interested in the CdS for years since I read about Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez walking it together as a father-son bonding thing. DP’s cousin did it last year (although his wife and children were back at home in the U.K. and they are now divorcing so perhaps not the best idea 😬)

mumofoneAloneandwell · 31/08/2025 23:23

Ive eaten so much food today to prep for the diet which starts tomorrow that I feel sick 😭

Happy September 1st (early) 🍂🤎

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 01/09/2025 05:19

Happy September 1st. Best wishes to all and my hopes that all ill family members and loved ones are fine. Thanks

I am still trying to sort things out after our holiday. I have not been very well the past few days and think I am coming down with a cold. So things have been progressing more slowly than I have hoped.

I think some batch cooking might be on the agenda for today. That always centres me.

Love to all.

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 01/09/2025 08:11

Morning all again.

I zipped to the Asda after posting last and bought new kitchen tea-towels, a tablecloth and oven gloves. All in a colour that matches the worktops so I am being very House&Garden. Grin

Otherwise I think the gardeners are coming and delegating chores is my second favourite chore.

Hope all are well.

Peridot1 · 01/09/2025 09:15

Morning all. And evening to @Mumtobabyhavoc.

Happy 1st of September.

@SydneyCarton - yes I hadn’t ever done ours and I think we have the machine about 3 or 4 years.

Love buying new tea towels etc @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia. Although then I struggle to get rid of the old ones! I have a pile of old ones in the utility room. I’m going to cut them in half and put them in a bag to use as rags for DH to use for dirty jobs.

We are having a concrete slab laid in the garden for a garden room/log cabin and as soon as the guys arrived to start this morning the heavens opened. It was monsoon like.

I have a few jobs to do today. Usual kitchen clean after the weekend. Dishwasher is already on. Laundry. Change a bed. And I have an @petalpower trip out to do - return notice boards to community centre that we borrowed for bbq, pick up a parcel at the post office, get cash, return a lampshade to Dunelm and maybe buy another if they have what I need, nip to Costco for a new suitcase, some diced lamb and some salmon. Also need to fit in either a walk or a gym session- can’t wait till garden room is built as it’s going to be a mini gym.

Have a great day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 01/09/2025 12:23

Inspired by the thread, I opened the washing machine filter yesterday. I've done it before, don't do it often, but was peepared. Drained the hose first. Barely any water. Opened the filter and quite a lot of water came out. Took filter out and it was clean. Cleaned up water. Replaced filter. Done.
Laundry is on the agenda today and likely take dc out for most of day. Yesterday was the beach. Might do that again. Going back to sleep now. Hopefully. 🙄

WinterFrogs · 02/09/2025 07:09

A weary wave from me as I try to get going. Slept very heavily last night and just made it downstairs for coffee.

I am going to clean my washing machine filter today. Just to keep in step with you all!

I have some paperwork to file. Or shred. Or scan. I try to keep actual paper to a minimum.

Heavy rain last night. Woke me very briefly. I do love September. I need to go outside and breathe it in. That'll help me wake up. Feeling a bit stiff too, so will do a bit of tai chi or something. Then I'm off out. How's the diet going @mumofoneAloneandwell ?

Remind me to book the cat in for vaccinations please? Poke me if I don't post that I've done it.

Back to school week? It's Thursday round here.

Big best wishes to all 😘

Morning all.

Morning @WinterFrogs !

My list for today

1 - Wash bedding
2- Put together school uniforms
3-Put together cahrity bags for DCs outgrown clothes - can't even shut their cupboards right now!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 02/09/2025 10:43

😭😭 its day 2 and I am MISERABLE @WinterFrogs - also need to take dcat to the vet for flea meds 📝

Inspired by this thread i will also be deep cleaning my washing machine

Today I just need to clean clean clean 😩. First drop off of the year went well, dd is officially back to school 🥳

Also need to cook a curry with rice for dd's dinner but will do that after pick up

Its a 2 hour round trip for each school run for me - didnt miss this

Have a lovely day everyone 🍂🤎

Peridot1 · 02/09/2025 11:13

Morning all.

@WinterFrogs - have you booked the cat’s vaccinations yet? Chop chop! 😄

@mumofoneAloneandwell - that sounds like a marathon school run. What diet are you following? It shouldn’t make you miserable as that’s not sustainable. Good luck with the cleaning. We will all have clean washing machines if nothing else!

@SpringingIntoSummerLobelia - you have reminded me I need to change a bed today too.

It’s been a busy one here already this morning. Went out for a walk with my neighbour to a local park before the rain hit. Workmen still here laying slab for garden room. They dug out a lot of soil and grass and weeds around a large area that we are making into a gravel garden so it’s all a bit of a mud bath now. And we still don’t have a delivery/installation date for the actual room yet. But I can start planning planting which will be good.

Today’s list:

  • dishwasher - done and on again
  • laundry - on and just finished so need to hang up
  • clean kitchen sinks - done
  • change a bed
  • vacuum kitchen/dining/sitting area
  • vacuum and wash hall floors
  • dust hall furniture
  • get food processor and attachments out and take photos and put on FB Marketplace

Have a good day all.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 02/09/2025 18:42

@Peridot1 it's exhausting in itself honestly

I'm doing calorie deficit and cutting out sugar. How i love sugar. I think i'm just in withdrawal

Soup and bake off tonight, that'll sort me out 😭

Hope you had a good one 🤎, my love to all xx

Peridot1 · 02/09/2025 21:08

@mumofoneAloneandwell - cutting out sugar is a real headache. And leads to headaches and withdrawal! If you are doing that I wouldn’t worry too much initially about the calorie deficit. Just yet anyway. Lots of protein and fibre and water. Don’t let yourself get hungry as you are more likely to crave sugar as it’s what we are used to. Deal with one thing at a time.

Peridot1 · 02/09/2025 21:10

I have just looked at my list from today and other than dusting hall furniture I’ve done it all! That doesn’t often happen….

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 02/09/2025 21:13

Well folks, your kind words and positive thoughts did the trick, and as of this afternoon PILs are safely established in their care home, and H, D, and I are home, ready for Y2 to start tomorrow! The road is still long and the last 48h were particularly difficult, but WHAT A RELIEF to know they are just 20 minutes down the road instead of four+ hours.

Now I need to cram five days of work into the remaining three weekdays. And make the house tidy for the cleaners Thursday morning....

Thanks all for the moral support 💜

Peridot1 · 02/09/2025 21:19

Oh that’s such good news and a huge relief for you all I’m sure. I hope they settle well. And that DD has a fab time back at school.
