Have had a lovely pottering sort of day as I had the house to myself - DH was at his volunteering, DS at work and DD staying with a friend for a couple of days. Did all of those fiddly little jobs like refilling the salt and pepper, weeding the veg garden, replacing the battery in a car key, printing info for our upcoming Europe trip etc. Nothing earth shattering but just things that needed doing!

WinterFrogs · 28/08/2025 07:36

As always I'm loving the snapshots of people's lives. That beach look lovely @mumofoneAloneandwell- it's definitely not the one near me as we're all about the pebbles and not much sand. My heart melted a little on reading about your little girl 💕

Great pictures @Mumtobabyhavoc and @SpiritOfEdna

I've managed to clear a corner of my bedroom and rearrange the smallest spare room back into more of a study area. I've been meaning to for some weeks, but it's been one of those situations where 'this' getting done requires 'that' being done first. In this case, it was a declutter of the airing cupboard and a bookshelf. If you know, you know.....Suddenly it all felt easy, and less of a chore. And it took no more than15 mins to sort out the airing cupboard.

It's had quite an impact on the chaos in my brain. There's real truth in the idea that your living space reflects what's going on inside you. And vice versa I guess.

I was up at 6am today and had to turn light on!! Winter is coming..... Well, autumn, anyway!

Love to all 💐

And for some reason I have ads for Anne Summers popping up on my page. I have not been looking at saucy underwear or sex toys. CBA. So I don't know what that's all about 😂

Peridot1 · 28/08/2025 09:33

Sounds like a nice productive day @petalpower.

@WinterFrogs I know just what you mean about things feeling like a real chore and then you do them and suddenly it wasn’t that much of a chore at all. And yes to the impact our living space can have on us.

There is a thread in Site Stuff complaining about intrusive video ads and the inappropriate ones - apparently those Ann Summers ones came up on a bereavement thread. Feel free to add your comments to the thread. I think there was one specifically about the Ann Summers ads too.

Yesterday I did a few more jobs from my big list - vacuumed and washed the floor in the dining area - moved everything out of the area except the table so a good deep clean of the floor. Arranged to have my ironing done - it’s being picked up this morning. And I did what I like to think of as an @petalpower trip out - one where you get lots of bits done - posted a parcel to my sister, used a discount voucher at Majestic and stocked up on wine, took foil pill packets, Brita filter and batteries to be recycled and did a quick supermarket shop.

Today’s list:

  • finish washing bedding from spare room - done
  • clean filter in washing machine- it’s a bit smelly and I remember @SydneyCarton i think saying she did hers and it fixed the smell
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • Laundry
  • walk
  • vacuum and wash hall floor

I am out for lunch with DH and then out for a bit this afternoon so not sure what else I’ll get done.

Have a great day all. Hope you are enjoying the CdS @SpiritOfEdna

SydneyCarton · 28/08/2025 10:02

@Peridot1 Yes, cleaning the filter made an instant difference to the rather grim smell! I was actually surprised by how quickly it went. One thing I did notice was that the washing machine backed up a bit into the sink for the first couple of washes after I did the filter (I think it was probably standing water which was now draining properly, so the machine was getting rid of more than the usual amount) so you may want to watch out for that depending on how your sink and machine are plumbed in.

Definitely agree about the clutter/mindspace connection. My place is a bit of a bomb site at the moment post-holidays and I find it very stressful. I’m pretty good at saying goodbye to stuff (I’m not overly sentimental) but it’s physically getting them out of the house that’s difficult. We have the classic problem of too much stuff and too little space!

petalpower · 28/08/2025 11:11

I love those trips out @Peridot1 - you can get so much done in one car journey! Makes me feel very efficient!

autumnangel · 28/08/2025 12:51

Hello all, sorry I haven't had a chance to read everyone's posts. I've spoken with a counsellor very briefly and I am feeling a little better. I know when I get the chance to properly sit down with someone and get everything off my chest I will be ok. The lady on the phone made a very good suggestion which was - try to do things that change the way you feel, that make the grief feel lighter even for a minute. So that's what I am going to do.
I'm going to take myself out for a walk soon, come home and have a nice long hair wash and shower then this evening I am going to see a show put on by a local down syndrome group so that'll be a nice night out.
One job for today is to order new bedding. I've seen some nice autumnal bedsets in Asda which are very reasonable priced.
Hope everyone is doing ok.

Peridot1 · 28/08/2025 13:56

Agreed @petalpower - it’s an easy way to feel efficient to get a few things done.

@SydneyCarton - will bear that in mind. I haven’t had a chance to do it just yet but judging by the smell it definitely needs doing. I do run a clean cycle in the machine pretty regularly so I think it’s definitely the filter.

@autumnangel - glad you spoke to a counsellor. And your plan for today sounds really nice. Nice things to do but not too taxing.

petalpower · 28/08/2025 16:01

That sounds positive step @autumnangel .
Jobs today have been:

  • finance admin for dad
  • respond to various emails and messages
  • strip and wash bed linen including the mattress topper and pillow protectors - it’s been a beautiful day for drying so they’re now back on the bed
  • clear the ironing basket (where does it all come from)
  • do a @Peridot1 style trip to our local village to take recycling, buy dog treats, choose a card for PIL 65th wedding anniversary and buy ingredient for tonight’s dinner
  • menu planned for next week and corresponding online grocery order including items for DD and DS for when DH are away on holiday
SpiritOfEdna · 28/08/2025 18:48

Hello! Am absolutely flaked out in Pamplona tonight - have had the food of the gods for tea (a Bounty and a packet of crisps 😂) My feet are destroyed by blisters and won’t keep a plaster on - so tomorrow will do a rest day and transfer onto next place. Will spend tomorrow being a tourist. Here’s two historic bridges: one into Zubiri and the other into Pamplona (that’s not me it’s a random) and a random one of tonight’s tea: 😂. Living the dream. Done 41 miles so far and my poor feet know it. Hope everyone’s well, SoE

Hopefully my boring images will pass review x

WinterFrogs · 28/08/2025 20:51

No, they didn't, @SpiritOfEdna 😔Mumsnet is evidently more comfortable with saucy ads than a regular poster's holiday snaps 😜 I hope the blisters heal quickly.

I shouldn't jest about Anne Summers if its coming up on a bereavement thread. I hope it gets sorted. I usually treat ads a bit like Christmas in that I just let them pass me by.

Best wishes with your counselling @autumnangel . I can vouch for the positives of sitting down with a good one.

I need to go to bed, so will just wave at everyone for now and catch up properly tomorrow. Night night UK dwellers and wishing a happy day to those in other time zones 👋

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2025 00:16

SoE hoping feet heal quickly. That's quite a buffet you've got! 😂 Love the pics. 😍
Petal, busy day!
Winter, sweet dreams.

Took dc out for a walk around Deer Lake again. Poor Havoc managed to tumble backwards off the boardwalk into the very yucky bog after losing balance while looking up at a plane overhead. 😱
I sprung into action quickly, got Havoc out, but I think there's a bit of residual trauma as there are lots of tears about my mum not being able to find a certain cartoon on Netflix. I'm chilling for a few mins beside a sleeping baby before I'll go fix everything. I'll find the show, make a snack and I think ice cream will help, too.

Huge load of laundry on
Washed floor at entry door
Bathed dc and myself
Took lamb chops out of the freezer, late, ugh, so will likely cook tomorrow

WinterFrogs · 29/08/2025 06:08

Hello! Poor Havoc 😔 And you! What a shock all round! I hope Netflix and ice cream fixed everything ok. I fell in our local pond when I was a similar age. I have a very vague recollection of being hauled back out. I can sympathise with your mum, too. With such an array of options, I can't always find the exact programme that littlest wants to watch. Sometimes I get the right programme, but not the right episode!

OP posts:
WinterFrogs · 29/08/2025 06:10

I can see your pictures now @SpiritOfEdna It looks lovely! And a fine feast too 😋

OP posts:
WinterFrogs · 29/08/2025 06:42

@SydneyCarton I've also noticed the occasional funky smell around my place, and in my case it was the water catcher at the back of my fridge/freezer ( on the outside of it by the wall) Who even knew that was there?? Probably people who read the book of words that come with it....

I tend to think of @petalpower too when I get my act together and do productive errands instead of flapping about here and there @Peridot1 🙃

Henceforth it shall be Petalerrands 😊

OP posts:
WinterFrogs · 29/08/2025 07:25

I am feeling quite thrilled with myself. Bedroom is back to its normal state, and the small room is an office, though with a bit of a disney theme as littlest sleeps in there when she stays. And all the laundry is away and not just piled on her bed as it so often is.

Have a good day everyone!

Peridot1 · 29/08/2025 08:54

Pics look great @SpiritOfEdna. Loving the buffet. Five star indeed! Hope the blisters aren’t too bad.

Poor Havoc @Mumtobabyhavoc. Ice cream and tv solves a lot for me so hopefully the same in your house.

Sounds very productive @petalpower.

@WinterFrogs - I have three baskets of laundry to put away…… although one of them is actually DS’s…..

I didn’t get much done on my list yesterday but one job for today - a supermarket trip to buy some supplies for village BBQ - got cancelled as the manager of the pub said he could order it all for us. Tick!

Today’s list -

  • speak to gardener about tidying up driveway etc - done
  • dishwasher/kitchen
  • pick up notice boards for BBQ
  • pt session
  • washing machine filter
  • tidy utility room
  • vacuum and was utility room floor
  • make dessert for BBQ tomorrow

And have a pedicure booked for this afternoon too.

Have a great day all.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 29/08/2025 15:49

Just waking up here...
Book of words. 😂
Love that @WinterFrogs 🐸

SpringingIntoSummerLobelia · 30/08/2025 06:36

Hi all- I am back and thoroughly jetlagged. But had a good trip and hopefully the Dcs have lifetime memories.

Catching up on the thread but wishing SofE the very best for her epic journey! Loving the buffet!

Today have the back from holiday chores to do, plus an attempt to make a claim on travel insurance for DH who had to access a local GP and pharmacy when he had a flare of one of his conditions- thankfully already declared when I bought the policy.

Hope everyone is well. Thanks

SingleThreadJoiner2 · 30/08/2025 11:20

Happy Saturday everyone, though it's quite grey and blustery here in the SW! Have been enjoying following along everyone's big and small adventures. We are still in a static situation here, FIL not yet discharged from hospital, but D and I have to go back home by Tuesday at the latest as school starts the next day. I've been trying to do bits and pieces of house clearing (throwing away expired food, donating in date food on olio, taking things to charity shop, passing books on to the neighbours, shipping some books off to world of books for sale) but it's hard while also looking after child (since H spends most of the day at the hospital) and keeping vaguely on top of my job. I know this too shall pass and in the some way or other we'll make it through but some times it's really quite dispiriting.

I'm so sorry for striking such a sad note!!

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/08/2025 13:29

This thread is moving so quickly 😄🥰, it will take me a while to catch up

Welcome back @SpringingIntoSummerLobelia xx

@SpiritOfEdna that looks like a lovely trip, hope youre enjoying it 😊 x

@Mumtobabyhavoc hope Havoc is okay now? 🥺 poor thing x

@WinterFrogs 😄 i'm getting weird ads for stuff popping up on top of my screen when on mn. None for ann summers though, maybe my internet presence is boring 🙈 x as always, I love this thread ❤️

Autumn is almost here everyone 🥰🥰, i'm so happy about it 😄

Was playing Christmas songs yesterday

@Peridot1 thank you, glad you've achieved some weight loss, I can imagine that you just feel better. I'm vowing to ditch the sugar for the New Year (September 1st 🍂🍂) as I want that feeling!

Apologies if I have forgotten anyone, I am slowly reading the posts xx

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/08/2025 13:36

Hope you're well @Aria999 @petalpower ❤️

mumofoneAloneandwell · 30/08/2025 13:38

@SingleThreadJoiner2 I am sorry that youre dealing with fil ill health - agree that This too shall pass, but it still must be hard. Just one day and one task at a time ❤️

@autumnangel I want to apologise - i had to scroll back to find your posts and I didn't mean to leave your husband unacknowledged ❤️. I'm sorry for your loss, I can imagine how much pain you are in. I hope that counselling can offer some relief to you. Agree that just talking to someone separate from your life can allow you to express everything you're feeling. Have you started yet?

I will say that I love this thread, even when i'm too much of a mess to contribute meaningfully. Everyone on here is lovely and its truly a safe place to share and talk about dh and your life now. 🤎❤️

Aria999 · 30/08/2025 13:55

Hello @mumofoneAloneandwell and everyone! I have not been keeping up with the thread!

glad Havoc is ok @Mumtobabyhavoc that sounds scary. It's terrifying how quickly falling into water can happen, lucky you were right there to fish him out! I'm thankful that DD5 is finally having swim lessons though so far she has learned to float for 15 seconds and to jump in, but no actual swimming.

yesterday I finally put a mirror on the wall that has been waiting in its box since we moved in 2019. It looks nice but I carefully centered it in the above mantelpiece space without it occurring to me that we might want to be able to see our faces in it, so it is now peacefully and pointlessly reflecting the top third of the room 😳

as I was on a roll (having reminded myself how to put large screws into plaster covered solid brick walls) I then put up the dragon head that DS won in a raffle from his kung fu class. It wasn't going too well until eventually I realized I had put the drill bit in the wrong way round, and then promptly burned my finger while correcting it. Recently used drill bits are hot, who knew?!

This is fairly standard for my DIY, it gets there in the end but I normally do something stupid at some point along the way.
