I have sugar soaped all the skirting boards in the hall, ready for painting, and cleaned the washing machine of mould , v satisfying but have used up lots of spoons.

MissConductUS · 17/02/2025 17:14

Welcome, @Feralbutcute, and thanks for sharing your calming cleaning news. However, I am a bit puzzled about how spoons were consumed in the process.

The electricians have come and gone, and I will post more kitchen pictures later. We've moved the table back in, and put out the small appliances now that the outlets have power.

I think I can shed light on the spoons? Is it from The Spoon Theory? Where people with autoimmune problems (like me 😁) have a certain number of “spoons” to last then through the day and each task uses a certain number. You have to ration your spoons to manage fatigue in order to function the entire day without crashing out.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2025 18:03

myrtle, oh god, sorry you knew people on that flight.
"the care taken of the victims by the people of
Lockerbie "
The two older women were talking about carefully washing, ironing and folding clothes so the loved ones could hug the clothes was gut wrenching. The little girl. ... Also, the couple who said they watched over the body of one victim that had been in a tree in their field until he was collected and called him, their boy. Anyway, enough ... it was horrific beyond words as all such tragedies are.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 17/02/2025 18:10

Miss, I think you'll appreciate this:

"Adult male turkeys are called toms, and females are called hens. Very young wild turkeys are called poults, juvenile males are jakes, and juvenile females are jennies. A group of turkeys is called a rafter or a flock."

I live in my old family home and just as my mum did back in the day, today I cleaned my hall floor on my hands and knees using a very soft cloth, and hand towels to dry it.
I warned my other half to stay away until it was fully dry, which he did.
Then as soon as it was safe to return, he walked right across it in the grubbiest of trainers.
I am now sat upstairs in my spare room (it’s like my sanctuary) mentally preparing myself for Eastenders.
Tomorrow I’m going to tackle the cupboard where I kero
my toilet rolls.

MyrtleLion · 17/02/2025 19:38

How frustrating Peggy. I really feel for you.

I love the turkeys!

Notre Dame is finished. I am really annoyed by the instructions because they were wrong. The pieces were not labelled individually, but on a diagram. On Board 7-1 pieces A1, A2, A3, etc. But only one side of the board was printed. Usually the instructions indicate which way round the printed side should face. This wasn't clear on the instructions. I ended up having to dismantle and reassemble two or three sections and I still ended up with some plain edges where it should have been printed.

Anyway, it took most of the day and is now complete.

And then there was a delivery of the new booknook I ordered on Saturday. I wasn't expecting it for at least a week. I have put it away or I will start on it and, honestly, I need a break.

I often clean that way, too. I hate shoes inside. So gross!!!!!!! 🤮🤮🤮🤮

Oh yes! Still Myrtle!

I'm a regular at the Bluestocking women's pub where I am a lion. It makes for amusing AI-generated images.

This is me making my models.

DandyDandylion · 17/02/2025 21:55

Hello fellow lion and all new and returning posters
I find diy work very tiring now but did my time with sugar soap. When we moved into our current house there was woodchip wall paper everywhere including ceilings. I spent an eternity with the steamer and then sugar soap cleaning it all off. Nowadays we clear the room, clean it and pay someone to come in and paint. Emptying and refilling the room is enough work for us now.
We are in our holiday lodge relaxing and planning activities. We are at a centre parcs so have the swimming pool with slides to use. Then we want to do some high ropes stuff and other activities.

HildaTablet · 17/02/2025 22:39

Myrtle, your models are amazing.

Woodchip wallpaper 😱 Dandy, we live in a very old house and every single wall was papered in woodchip when we moved in. I don’t know how many hours/days we too spent getting the damn stuff off with a steamer and scrapers. Just the thought of it brings me out in hives. It’s horrendous, isn’t it? I don’t actually like wallpaper at all. We don’t have any now - everywhere is plastered (some in lime plaster, as it would have been originally given the age of the house) and painted or lime-washed.

OneFineDay13 · 17/02/2025 23:12

Mine is very dull..took kids to home bargains. Bought silicone to seal the bottom of my toilet, psyched myself up to do it. (Am not DIY minded at all) first of all could barely get the seal broken then when I went to use it, realised I didn't have the gun part to get the silicone out 😏 started hoovering my room m, hoover wasn't picking up. Had to take the full thing apart twice full of cat hair.

then the urge to wash all the bits of the hoover struck me and I have just bathed all the bits, the amount of gunk that came out though

Mumtobabyhavoc · 18/02/2025 05:58

Havoc and I just had Nutella s'mores made in the microwave. 😛 Had just finished brushing teeth when baby woke up, so now I've got baby on my lap and Havoc is in bed.

DandyDandylion · 18/02/2025 08:17

As a former girl guide I have to tell you off for doing smores in a microwave Havoc. Marshmallows are done on sticks over an open fire but a candle will do in a pinch. I actually bought a kit one Christmas which had a small oil burner in specifically for the purpose.
I am watching the wildlife from our lodge which is mostly small birds I recognise. Did have one walk past a bit smaller than a pheasant but similar. No idea what it was though.

When I saw the discussion on how long it takes to deep clean a bathroom and so many replies said 30 minutes…..
Add in spoons and it’s about 4 hours for me!

HildaTablet · 18/02/2025 09:43

@DandyDandylion perhaps a partridge? (the not-pheasant)

It took me half a day, to do the skirting boards 😒

DandyDandylion · 18/02/2025 13:37

Yes Hilda I think it was a partridge from googling. Didn’t get a picture of that but did snap this which we believe to be a Muntjac.
I am chilling after being battered about on water flumes. My DS has gone of to the gym whilst the rest of us catch our breathe and then we are going to play badminton.

Welcome, @OneFineDay13 and @PeggyMitchellsCameo, and thanks for sharing your calming news of your domestic endeavors. One thing I love about starting a new thread is how it brings out the new joiners. I think people must feel like if they join when the thread is very new, they aren't interrupting other people's ongoing conversations.

This weekend was very busy. The backsplash was installed, and the electricians and plumber were in yesterday. The dishwasher is now connected and we have a waterline to the ice maker in the freezer. DH and I moved the table and the water cooler back in. A couple of times when I needed something from the fridge, I found myself walking to the dining room, because that's where it was for five weeks.

I have done no packing whatsoever for my trip to Orlando tomorrow, and the car is picking me up at 6:15 AM. So I'll have to get that all done tonight.

Here's a picture of the turkeys in my snowy front garden for anyone who missed them on the last thread, along with a couple of the old kitchen and two I took this morning. I'm still putting things away, so it looks a little untidy. I love the dimmable under-cabinet LED lights! They're perfect for leaving on at night.
