Math, please update about bread-making results! That sounds fun. 🤓

Been awake since 5am with baby. Really should've gone back to sleep. Started scrolling and now thinking about getting up, making coffee and having a bit of breakfast while watching a morning chat show in peace while dc are still asleep...🤩

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/02/2025 16:25

So, I got up, did some quick exercises, put coffee on, wrapped left-over pancakes in foil and popped in the over for dc, cut up some fruit and then pitter patter along came baby with Havoc a few minutes later. We've now eaten, played elephants with pool noodles, watched elephants trumpeting and baby elephants playing on YT, made Havoc a coffee like mummy (just foamed warm milk) and I'm finally watching a few minutes of tv before we need to get ready for school. 🤷‍♀️

I had to go to the local hospital for a blood test. As I left I commented to a young mum that her little boy, who looked about 3, was a delightful chap because he'd been chatting happily to her. She thanked me amd as we chatted, she told me that he was actually 23 months and he'd been 5lb at birth. He'd started talking at 7 months.

He was holding his mum's hand and then reached his other hand up so he was holding my hand too. I just melted. It's been a long time since a tiny (though he was very big for his age) toddler held my hand. We walked to my car and then I let go and he waved goodbye.

It was a really lovely moment.

Ahsheeit · 24/02/2025 17:43

Yesterday, I cleaned and sorted the tins and dried food cupboard. I can now see what's in there.

I've just got into the bath and had put too much cold water in, creating much disappointment.

MissConductUS · 24/02/2025 18:05

Welcome, @Ahsheeit, and thanks for sharing your news kitchen and bathing news. I have also done a lot of tin and dried food sorting and putting away in the last few weeks. It is lovely to be able to see what's back there. And I had no hot water at the hotel I was staying on Saturday morning, so our lives overlap there too.

Math, my DD got a jury questionnaire in the mail here last week. It was to determine if she was eligible and able to serve. I opened it and sent her a photo of it. It had a online response option, so she probably used that. I'll have to ask her if she had to provide proof that she moved out of state. She does have an Indiana driver's license now, so that should work. I wasn't really nervous about flying. There are thousands of flights per day in the US. Having a few incidents at around the same time is very likely just a statistical anomaly.

Havoc, I miss the wonder of having little ones. Cherish this time. They will become difficult teenagers, it's almost guaranteed. 😁

Myrtle, what a lovely encounter!

We had our weekly FaceTime call with DD and SiL. She is just into her new Federal government job, so she's waiting to see if the ax is going to fall on her with everything going on in Washington. Her job has a three year term, and she casually dropped into the conversation that she wants to work for three years and then start having children. I guess that solves that mystery.

The carpenter came by this morning, installed the last three cabinet handles, built some shelves for the angled space where this cabinet meets the wall, and replaced the door to DS's bedroom. The door was broken because years ago, we have him a mini basketball hoop to hand off the door, and for years he threw a mini basketball at the door to score a basket. The impact eventually shook the hollow door apart. The painter will come back at some point to paint them to match the cabinets.

While he was here, the carpenter measured all of the windows so that we can get a cost to replace them later this year. I'd love to have new ones, but it's going to be very expensive, based on what we spent replacing the two windows in the kitchen.

@mathanxiety @MissConductUS I'm fascinated by the whole state system and how they are all so different yet all part of the same country.
It was the thought of standing in the cold and rain that put me off @mathanxiety - though DS's team does not score many they are a great team and I see improvements in all of them and they are amazing together.
Lovely food again @Mumtobabyhavoc .
@Ahsheeit I recently cleared the fridge of out of date jars. Was a task but very satisfying. Next job sort the airing cupboard - DS has had a new bed double instead of single so some surplus bedding now!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/02/2025 00:07

Sprouts, I've been taking the rain for you. Late Sunday afternoon we were at Granville Island and is was pouring. Apparently another atmospheric river. 🙄
I kinda loved it, though. Took some pics for you.

Part 2: Another rainy day today, but not too badly, so spent the afternoon at Cates Park and Deep Cove in North Van. Went to the "famous" Honey's Donuts (so they say / much to my dismay though*) to treat Havoc to a doughnut and for another good walk around. Baby got a taste and was rather sleepy by that time.

*Have spent a tonne of time in the Cove and it has become very touristy. My dismay is that it is a very small place and not able to accommodate tourist buses yet the municipality allows it.

Beautiful photos, havoc.
The bread turned out really well. It tasted exactly as I remembered and the smell while baking was wonderful. We baked it in my big cast iron frying pan. It's definitely something we'll do again (there's plenty of flour left).

We had a very spring-like day yesterday, and as usual in this sort of weather it was hard to figure out exactly what jacket to wear. I erred on the light side and got away with it. It's raining cats and dogs this morning but I'm hoping the sky will be clear enough tonight to see the planetary alignment, though the light pollution makes that difficult.

I'm going to make more apple butter later. This time I bought the apples myself, Granny Smiths instead of the assortment I had last time.

MyrtleLion · 26/02/2025 18:27

Lovely pictures! And the food conversations are amazing.

It rained a lot today until 2pm and then cleared up to a beautiful sky.

I have finished the latest booknook aside from the roof, the front display panel and the electrics. Frustrated because lots of fiddly little things broke and wouldn't glue together properly. But it is nearly done. I will post images tomorrow.

DH has gone away to Manchester overnight for a work meeting. It's the first time he's been away in a year and before the pandemic he was away overseas one week in three. This worked really well as we don't miss each other at all and really enjoy our solitude, but when he came back I was always aware that I had missed him at that point. He has WFH for 15 years. Oddly I was a bit apprehensive about him going, but it will be fine.

Lunch with my DM tomorrow, she's coming to me from about an hour away. DH returns in the evening so we might go to the pub. We're trying to lose weight so haven't been this year. We've been losing weight for three years and have lost four stone each. Hopefully the final two stone will come off for good by Christmas.

Then on Friday I am going to that London to see a band and meet my friend. I will stay at her new house that I haven't visited yet and meet her DGS on Saturday. I haven't met him yet so it should be lovely.

sueelleker · 26/02/2025 18:39

A bit exciting-I've just filled in an on-line application form for Dog's Trust. I lost my spaniel in early December, and have been waiting for the weather to warm up a little before I looked for another one.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/02/2025 19:54

Sue, sorry about you dog. 💐 Which type of spaniel?
Myrtle, the visiting sounds nice. Good on you for the weight loss. Eating out/take aways and alcohol are brutal for preventing it/adding weight, aren't they?
Maths, I'm imagining how lovely your kitchen smelled with that bread! There is nothing line freshly baked bread and butter. 😛😛😛😛😛

Rushing a bit here. Had Havoc to school, then Costco, groceries away and put lunch together, feeding baby and need to be out the door for a medical appt for my mum (as an entourage...). Wish me sanity. 😵‍💫

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2025 00:09

Updating to say we survived and are back home. The lovely doctor did leave rather quickly at the end for next patient, but I'm sure it had nothing to do with my children.... 😇😇

sueelleker · 27/02/2025 00:11

She was a springer spaniel. She was 14, so had a good innings. I'm thinking of a cocker now though.

Umanresources · 27/02/2025 00:59

I’ve been keeping an eye on all your busyness but not had chance to check in. I got my Attendance Allowance, the form was received on 15 January and I got message on my phone to say it had been received and it could take up to 12 weeks to receive a decision. I had the money in my bank account a couple of weeks later but only received the confirmation letter a few days after that. I got the highest rate and it’s being increased in April. I can’t believe how relatively easy it was.

I’ll have to keep looking for a cleaner now. I had a hospital appointment yesterday with the orthopaedic surgeon, well it was a junior doctor and I felt very fobbed off, being told to go away and lose weight. “Just remember, willpower.” Oh silly me, I’d never thought of that! Nothing else to be done, I’m on the strongest prescribed painkillers, plus I’m taking over the counter anti-inflammatory pills. Oh, he also told me to get a stairlift. I reminded him I was a pensioner and couldn’t afford it. I thought it was rather cheeky of him to suggest it.
i might have to look into that though, although it’s not something I really want to do. I feel as though it labels me as old and disabled (well obviously I am at the moment).
Ive been enjoying your food @Mumtobabyhavoc and your kitchen is fabulous @MissConductUS.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2025 02:10

Uman, how condescending of the doctor. I wonder if there is financial aid for the stairlift?
Sue, I also had a springer (mix). 🩷

Feeling pretty wiped out here. Early supper, chicken, naan, grapes, tomatoes, corn on the cob; Greek salad with chicken for me. Watching tv and refereeing dc now.

sueelleker · 27/02/2025 08:00

Mumtobabyhavoc; What was yours crossed with? She was our third springer, and came with an unexpected bonus; five weeks after we got her, she had a litter of sprockers! No-one had realised she was pregnant. So of course we kept one, but I lost him before his mum.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2025 08:24

Awww Sue, just thinking about mine (very long passed) makes my eyes misty. She was crossed with Lab. So long silky hair, light brown with white markings, long tail and nose. I remember taking her to farm where we kept our horses to meet the pure springers there. It was like she suddenly realized she was a dog and all her birder instincts came out. 😂

Mumtobabyhavoc · 27/02/2025 08:34

Sue, those pups must've been so hard to part with! So sad you lost yours. They're such a special breed. 🩷
So, you still have the mum, then?

No, she was my last one, that I lost in December. She had 3 pups that survived; my niece had one, but he had heart and seizure problems; and died the year before mine. The third one went to an acquaintance of my SIL, but they lived a distance away; and I don't know how she did.

Deathraystare · 27/02/2025 10:54

Well, the most energetic thing I did yesterday was go to Specsavers as I really need new glasses. Was absolutely horrified. It is going to cost me £610!!!!!

And of course, today (payday) my wages have not gone through...... I think because the usual person who deals with it is off I reckon my details were not sent through. Also happened to a colleague. At this rate I will get my new glasses at Christmas!!!

PumpkinPatchScarecrow · 27/02/2025 11:52

Hello everyone. I hope it's ok to drop in.

It's beautifully sunny here (south west UK) and it's prompted me to get on and look through my seed packets from the last few years and see what I have left and what needs replacing. I'll put an order in over the weekend I think. I'm going to try some new varieties of tomatoes, courgette, beans and squash this year. Probably some other new things too. I tend to get overexcited at all the lovely options.

My narcissus are all out and looking jolly.

Lunch was lovely with really big portions including apple and blackberry crumble with custard. My mum is well, which is nice to hear. It's been a year since my brother died of cancer so we reminisced about him and how his son is doing.

I may have mentioned that I'm being investigated for genetic conditions. I've heard back that I don't have the condition I assumed I had, but I do have a different one which is very rare. Aside from being told which gene it affects, how it's passed down and the obvious condition it leads to (for which I have the most obvious symptom), I don't know much more. For example, does it cause extreme fatigue, which is why I was investigated? I will learn more at a genetic appointment which will be sent out soon.

The hardest thing was not telling my mum yet. She has the same obvious symptom and I have inherited the condition from her, but she doesn't know I'm being investigated and I don't want to tell her until I know more. I am weirdly pleased that they found something though because I can probably get some more support. So often women get fobbed off or think they are being a nuisance when it's actually a serious condition. Fortunately it's not a life-limiting condition.

My particular genetic mutation has not been found in the genetic databse of over a million people, so I'm not sure if I will share my condition here as it may be outing, but I'll know more later.
