Bliss today. Both dc napped from 2:30-4:30pm. Me, too. Much needed! 😀

Maths, it has warmed up here to 10c today. It's raining, but it's fine. My skin is already feeling better.

MissConductUS · 20/02/2025 13:48

DH has informed me that the turkeys have invaded the garden again.

I am in meetings until 2:30, then have the rest of the afternoon off,

Deathraystare; how long have you had the frames? If they're in good condition, Specsavers might re-glaze them instead of you having to buy new ones.

They are only cheap readers and I have booked an appointment with Specsavers for next week as I have not had proper specs for ages!

I often clean that way, too. I hate shoes inside. So gross!!!!!!! 🤮🤮🤮🤮

If the loo roll cupboard is lockable, keep your dirty messy husband in there!

HelenaJustina · 20/02/2025 23:18

Waving and marking my place on the new thread. Not managed to catch up with the old one for a while. It’s been a really busy couple of months. DC2 was overseas (Europe) with school earlier this week and just as they came back, DC1 flew out to Africa for 3 weeks. It’s the furthest one of my DC has travelled from me and I’m not sure how I feel!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 21/02/2025 00:26

Oh, Helena, what great experiences for your dc. I'd be nervous, but excited, so I get where you're coming from. 🩷

I've got a cranberry choc chip cake in the oven, have done 2 loads laundry and folded and put away one, three telephone med appts for me, Havoc and my mum, been to the park with dc, made lunch/snacks and am now starting dinner prep. I'm sauteeing brussels sprouts and have left over chicken. Sunset isn't til after 5:30pm now and it feels like I've got so much more time. It's currently 7c and raining. ☔️

mathanxiety · 21/02/2025 04:19

Helena exciting but nerve wracking. You know you're doing something right when they feel confident enough to head off for adventures.

There's just one more day left of heading out with Vaseline smeared on my face before our weather climbs back up to the freezing point. It will feel like summer all weekend.

Dcat has been sleeping at my feet all through this cold spell, with outbreaks of purring, scratching herself and shaking the bed, and walking around on top of me all night. I forgive everything. The purring is very charming.

MissConductUS · 21/02/2025 15:08

Helena, I’m so glad you found us. What great adventures for your DC. It is a bit scary when they take wing, though, isn’t it?

Math, it still very cold back in NY. DH had more snow last night.

DH has installed a cat shelf on the kitchen window so they can watch the bird feeder activity. The old window had a much bigger sill that they could sit on.

it looks like a lovely day here. My meeting room has a view of the pool. I did get a little color on my shoulders and face from sitting by the pool yesterday.

I love the cat shelf!

Welcome to Helena. I think the process of having children is one of increasing separation from moment they are born. It's important for them, and our job is to wish them well while hiding our concerns.

Like Havoc I have also done laundry and managed to shrink DH's 100% wool XXL jumper to that of a child. Fortunately he has been kind enough to laugh and pretend he doesn't really like turtle necks anyway.

I have begun a new booknook and it's looking great so far.

HelenaJustina · 21/02/2025 21:21

Thanks gang, they are still all under 18 so these are big adventures, especially the Africa one!

MissConductUS · 21/02/2025 22:05

I went to the pool after my meetings finished, but it was too cloudy and cool to stay out there for long, but I did spot this sign.

Lovely to hear from you @HelenaJustina sounds like a real adventure for the dc!
Looks lovely @MissConductUS - will you go on any rides??
@Mumtobabyhavoc food sounds lovely as usual - as you can probably guess I am partial to a sprout.......

sproutsandparsnips · 21/02/2025 22:19

Oops accidentally pressed post too soon.
DS was supposed to be playing rugby tonight and I was going to go straight from work to watch but as it has been raining (yet again) it has been called off due to waterlogged pitch. I am secretly a little bit glad as it has been a hectic week and I have been able to do some food shopping on the way home. I suspect DS2's game will be off on Sunday for the same reason so I may be able to go to church.

MissConductUS · 21/02/2025 22:45

@sproutsandparsnips, while we are on Disney property, our meetings don’t include access to the park. Some people came to Orlando early to have a few days to visit the theme parks.

I’m currently on a bus. We’re off to have dinner at a country club about half an hour away from the hotel.

OP posts:
Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2025 00:29

Miss, def stay away from alligators.
Sprouts, ahhhh so your name indicates your obsession with sprouts?
Myrtle, how did you manage shrinking the sweater? Accidentally washed on hot or accidentally put it in the dryer? I hang all clothes to dry so hopefully won't have to worry.

So, in not so dull news... we had an earthquake today at about 1:26pm PST (9:26pm UK) if 5.1m that lasted about 10s. Was at medical appt with my mum and dc.
Everything was shaking and it took a few seconds before I said out loud, What is this? The receptionist said, This would be an earthquake. I think he was googling as it was happening. Then I did and sure enough.... Made for an interesting afternoon.

Pic of news stories on google.

MissConductUS · 22/02/2025 01:16

Havoc, we have an earthquake like that every 10-15 years in New York. They usually happen in the middle of the night.

We had drinks on the veranda at the country club before dinner,

Goodness Havoc! I was in an earthquake in the Midlands years ago. It was very disconcerting, but I was safely in bed. I can't imagine what it would be like if I had been going about my business.

I put the jumper in a soak and prewash at 30 degrees and 800 rpm. I think the soak probably did for it. I had a cashmere jumper in a similar wash that didn't shrink but went very fluffy from being fine threads. It is much softer but less elegant!

I was irrationally furious with DH last night because my internet speed was very slow. He doesn't like rebooting the router because it takes a long time to get back online. He was fine of course. He rebooted the booster box and dared to ask if I had rebooted my devices, which of course I had - three times. I went to bed early and this morning it was just as bad.

I have now turned off the VPN on each device and of course the speed came back. It's still his fault, though.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2025 18:53

Myrtle, yes, it was a mix of excitement and fear wondering if that was "it" or if there was more to come.
We have several areas ripe for major movement.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 22/02/2025 23:02

I just solved wordle in about 10s. First guess was off by first letter only. Second guess was correct. Both guesses are my go-to first try words that I alternate between each time I play. It was fun to see my actual words be the correct words, but boring to solve so fast. Oh , well.

So we're now getting another atmospheric river. All the rain this past week has killed local skiing. The rain pretty much guarantees our winter is over. It's 10c and raining atm. ☔️🌧️

Mumtobabyhavoc · 23/02/2025 05:19

Just made sundaes. 😛

MyrtleLion · 23/02/2025 13:27

35 minutes making test tubes for my book nook.

I've added a pen for scale. The paper was supposed to go inside the tiny plastic tubes but that was impossible so I've stuck ot.to the outside.

Cat shelf looks good, cat looks better MissC what a fine feline.
Earthquake sounds quite scary I have only witnessed very small ones where you are not sure if it was one. Though at this time of year the farmers start rolling their fields and when the big roller goes past our house that does make everything shake. Glad we live in a relatively safe location from natural phenomenon point of view.
We too have much milder wetter weather than a week ago. I hope we have seen the last of the very cold temperatures. That said it is currently 50/60 mph winds so we are having a day at home. DS is revising for his next gcse mock and dd is doing some guide badge work. Since Covid ds’s school now do this third set of mocks which they say would be used by teachers to give grades if it happened again. I’m sure I only did one set of mocks but guess the new system keeps them on their toes.

MissConductUS · 23/02/2025 21:55

Dandy, that's my sweet girl Daisy. She's 13 years old and doesn't get on that well with the orange boy, Mingus. But they tolerate each other.

I flew home yesterday, back to the snow and cold of New York. I spent the afternoon unpacking, doing laundry and resting up from my travels. I don't tend to sleep well in hotels. The aircon that cycles on and off all night disturbs me. I'm so used to the silence here in the woods. We had some of DH's Mongolian Beef from the freezer for dinner.

I had no hot water in my room on Saturday morning, so had to take a very quick cold shower. I mentioned it when checking out, and the chap at the front desk took off the $42 charge I had for the breakfast buffet, which was fabulous. I had French toast, eggs and bacon! I guess you'd call it a full American.

I ordered a new bathing suit this afternoon from Lands End, with a 40% off promo code. I've lost some weight in the last year and all of my old ones are too big now. I've no idea when I'll use it next.

I went to church this morning, then stopped at the posh bakery to get cupcakes for dessert tonight. The shop is right by the Hudson River. The river is still covered in ice and snow, but it's supposed to warm up this week. The mountains you see on the other side are the southern end of the Catskill Mountain range.

I'm taking a day of leave tomorrow, and the carpenter is coming over to do a few things in the morning.

sprouts I remember doing a little happy dance whenever I got word that a soccer match was canceled (usually for waterlogged pitches). A secret happy dance of course. I didn't want the DCs thinking I didn't love watching a team that scored a total of four goals one season.

havoc 5.1 is a decent sized earthquake. Yikes!

MissC a beautiful view. Were you nervous to fly after all the recent problems?

I spent a very lazy weekend enjoying less frigid weather. DD ordered some real Irish wholemeal flour that arrived today. We're going to attempt to make Irish brown bread tomorrow evening.

One of the DDs who no longer lives in the state got a jury summons in the mail on Saturday. DS got one last week and I had to send off a copy of his driver's license from the state he's living in to prove he's no longer a resident of the county, along with the first page of the summons. I'll have to do the same for DD. I expect to get one too, even though I sent them a copy of my exemption a few years ago.
