Anyone discovered an affair after an accident?

I recently watched a TV programme about a woman who found out her husband was having an affair after he'd been involved in a serious accident which also involved his affair partner. She thought he was away on business.

Has this happened to anyone in real life?

How shocking it must be and you must have so many questions in your head!

What happened, if you can say?

Frangela · 03/02/2025 00:15

It’s a plot point in a couple of novels, certainly.

No, I know at least one of them uses here and it would be very obvious it was about their relationship.

There was a film with Harrison Ford years ago with that premise.

It happened to my grandmother in the 60s. She was having an affair with a work colleague and they drove out for the day and he had a heart attack and died.

Youngheartsalittletogetherness · 03/02/2025 00:32

Not an affair,I read of one the guy was with a dominatrix and took a heart attack. The woman gave him CPR till ambulance came and I think she phoned to inform the wife.

We have a well known recent example in the media. Guy tells his wife he’s going on a camping trip with mates. He goes on a camping trip with the mistress. They are murdered while on the camping trip, wife raises the alarm when he doesn’t come home. Bodies are found, the wife (along with everyone else who reads the news) finds out he went with mistress. His friends then say he often brought mistress on group camping trips.

Just clicked that op didn't give an example.

I was the only witness to a fatal car crash early one morning.
At the inquest, it transpired that the driver was having an affair, and had been speeding to get back home before suspicion was aroused.

Yellowcakestand · 03/02/2025 00:52

When those guys were stuck down the mine there was a wife and mistress wasn't there. Was it Mexico?

RocketNan · 03/02/2025 01:01

You go first op.

I remember a post on here. It was awful. The OP's partner suffered a medical episode and passed away. She then found out from his phone he was having an affair. They also didn't have a will set up, so everything he had (I think this included the life insurance policy) went to their shared child, but she couldn't access it to pay off the house or the costs associated with raising their child.

I think about her time to time and really do hope she managed to have that overturned.

My cousin lived with her partner for over 20 years. Turns out he was living a double life - she no idea that he had a wife and grown up kids. He worked away a lot 😐 She found out after he died at the wheel of his car on his way (to their) home. Neither his wife or my cousin knew about each other.
He was very wealthy so he'd put the house he shared with my cousin in her name. Everything else went to his kids.

A friend of mine went to a church that had a pillar of the community type man he had a wife and adult son. His wife discovered when he developed early dementia he also had a longterm girlfriend with whom he had daughter ( the same age as the son). His children wanted nothing to do with him in the end up.

ifelttheearth · 03/02/2025 06:28

If I had an example myself I wouldn't have asked if anyone knows of someone it's actually happened to!

In the 90’s I was related by marriage to a man who died in a car crash in Spain. He was driving the car with his affair partner in, and I can’t remember if she died or not. The wife had two very small children, and had to bring his body back and bury him, all the time coming to terms with the fact that he was having an affair.

TouchOfSilverShampoo · 03/02/2025 06:37

I knew someone who died whilst in a cheap hotel with a well known prostitute.

He has been seeing her for years, sleeping with her and giving her money. They took some ecstasy and on that occasion it didn't agree with him.

The prostitute had given him HIV and his wife was not only told that her husband was dead but that she also had to get herself screened for HIV.

There have been at least two posters here who discovered affairs following accidents.

Absolutely devastating.

SulkySeagull · 03/02/2025 06:38

My aunt was a nurse in A&E. Her husband showed up with a broken nose with his mistress by his side. Apparently the mistress’ husband had found out!

Whydoyoucarewhatido · 03/02/2025 06:47

I remember the lady who posted that her husband had died in an accident, walking or hiking I think. When his possessions were returned to her she discovered via his phone that he’d been having an affair and was planning to leave her. She’d had no idea. I cannot imagine how devastating that would be. I still think about her and hope she’s ok.

Neighbours my family were close to in the 90s, lovely couple. She sadly hung herself at home totally out of the blue, no note left he was devastated. An police inquest learnt she had been having an affair and was tormented by the guilt as couldn’t chose between them, devastated the husband committed suicide in the exact same way 18 months later.

Often think about them, so very sad
