Anyone discovered an affair after an accident?

ifelttheearth · 02/02/2025 23:42

I recently watched a TV programme about a woman who found out her husband was having an affair after he'd been involved in a serious accident which also involved his affair partner. She thought he was away on business.

Has this happened to anyone in real life?

How shocking it must be and you must have so many questions in your head!

I work in a specialist travel insurance provider. We had a case of a man who had gone on a "business trip". In reality he had gone on a cruise with the OW. He had a heart attack and died. His wife was notified and was clearly shocked as events became clear. It got really messy as she was furious. She refused to have the body repatriated and sadly, he was eventually off boarded and cremated alone in Portugal. Wife refused any ceremony. His ashes were scattered locally.

Unless he was a werewolf I can’t see how this is even possible.

You can get ‘stuck’ during sex. If the man has a penile fracture (which can happen whilst changing positions while still inside) it can be impossible to pull out and medical intervention is needed.

I remember watching something once where there was a car accident and a woman had bitten off the man’s penis mid-blow job in the crash. I can’t remember if it was the woman with the unattached penis left in her mouth or the now penisless man who was married, but what a way to find out. (Luckily it was fiction, of course.)

That's in The world according to Garp

I kind of know someone a similar thing happened to! I've named changed for this understandably..

The guy is quite well known radio DJ who has a bit of a thing for prostitutes (he's married with dcs)
The story goes that one time he was getting a BJ and the sex worker had a fit and clamped her teeth onto his willy severing half of it.
I always wonder how he explained that to his wife... (I actually don't know whether he was married or not at the time)
It hasn't stopped him visiting prostitutes though - the reason I know this story is bc my best friends old friend is one of the ladies he visits. She's a larger lady and partakes in acts such as "splodging" which is one of his favourite things to do it apparently!

I vaguely know his dc's and wife too and always feel really sorry for them knowing what a dirty creep their husband/father is and they're possibly oblivious.

Um, if you don't read at least the first post of a thread, usually kind of difficult to know what it is about! 😂

But you're still here lol

Not an affair,I read of one the guy was with a dominatrix and took a heart attack. The woman gave him CPR till ambulance came and I think she phoned to inform the wife.

This was Rex in Desperate Housewives!

Aftergloww · 03/02/2025 10:45

I got a panicked call from my ex and his friends that he had a “bad fall” on a Halloween party and had broken his leg and arm. They called me to inform he was being rushed to the hospital.

The “bad fall” was a woman’s partner that jumped him because she fessed up.

@Dweetfidilove Sorry, I don't know how reply to a quoted post on the app. Apologies, no I meant the lady who posted shared a child with her partner. I just mentioned their shared child so it was clear it wasn't just his child (from a previous relationship) who inherited. Their child inherited everything, to be accessible when they hit adulthood, but the OP was worried about mortgage payments, costs associated with raising the child etc., without the two incomes. From memory, I think she was taking legal advice to challenge it. It was that very post that led to DP and I setting up our will to ensure we're both protected in the event of an unfortunate accident.

It does look like that, but to be fair OP hasn't done anything to conceal that they are looking for real-life examples of a fictional trope.

No, but I bet versions of this are not only true but not that unusual.

I remember the poster and the husband that died on a hobby ( this one wasn't cycling but much more identifying so I won't post what) it was awful, it felt like a troll because the story was so bad, but I had happened to be on holiday where it happened and the newspaper reports all tied up. I can't imagine being so angry and sad at the same time.

Edited

That sounds believable and of course things like that do happen, a dominatrix phoning his wife.......not so much

Sceptic1234 · 03/02/2025 10:53

Former colleague in mountain rescue team. Couple lost / benighted in terrible weather in Scottish hills. Eventually found safe and well. Made the papers... turned out she was with AP and her husband thought she was doing something completely different.

In my experience, you come back from multi day winter hiking trips very tired, unwashed, smelly and with a rucksack full of damp, sweaty clothes. No idea how she planned to conceal all that. In the event it didn't matter ... he found out via local news!

OMG! Nothing can be taken for granted. I can see why it spurred you into action. We learn so much from others' experiences, but crikey.
I can't imagine having to deal with his death, betrayal and the financial uncertainty all at once. He royally screwed her in so many ways ☹️. Poor woman.

Thank you for replying 😊.

Wasn´t this what happened to Ted Kennedy? He had a car accident with his affair partner and the car fell into the sea/lake (can´t recall which). He omitted to mention her so the affair wouldn´t be discovered. She was trapped in the car, but didn´t drown, she died of asfixia in the air pocket left in the car around 3 or 4 hours later. Not only the hight of callousness also criminal.

Not an accident but a prank. Back in the 90s when the national lottery had just started family member of my BF decided to record the lottery one week then get her DH a lottery ticket with those numbers for his birthday. Bit of a mean prank but it massively backfired.

She put the recording on instead of the actual lottery show when people were over at their house for his birthday. He jumped up, said he won the lottery, told them all to F off as he was having an affair and running away with her!!

I always thought this story was an urban myth?

Iloveallthecats · 03/02/2025 11:01

I had this nearly happen to me, I was young and getting a lift home from someone my boyfriend at the time would not have approved of. On the way home a large bit of concrete was thrown off a bridge onto the car windscreen and came through the middle of our seats.

He pulled over and paid for a taxi to take me home, and made sure I was gone from the scene before calling the police. I think he had a wife (he never told me so, but there were clues), and I had a boyfriend, so it would not have looked good to be together. Very close call and I changed my ways after that, lesson learnt!

Chappaquidick on Martha's Vineyard. They tried to pass her off as just a colleague and I think one of his right hand men tried to pretend he was the one driving at first but it all came out.

I always thought this story was an urban myth?

This was back in 1995 and her aunt and uncle did get divorced. I’d met them a few times and they were quite mean to each other in front of people before this. I wasn’t there but this is what she said happened at the time so who knows? Maybe it started an urban myth but I’ve never heard the same story from anywhere else.

My sister-in-law (who is terrible) had an affair with the husband of her friend. He rolled her car, thus, the mess became known to the whole small distict, their kids etc.

I always remember it in Greys anatomy- the man was with a younger woman and had a heart attack with one of them handcuffed to the bed or something and they had to bring them in I always remember the wife coming in and saying‘I suppose you think this is funny’ and her acting was AMAZING, I was actually gutted for her

Bullshit! Presumably one of them would have the key, or the ambulance crew would call the fire brigade to release them. How would they get the bed out of the house and into the ambulance?

samarrange · 03/02/2025 11:11

I remember in the 1980s when automatic speed cameras were introduced in the country where I was living at the time. They sent you a photo of the front of the car so you could see who was driving. But this photo also included the front seat passenger, and if the driver's spouse saw the letter they tended to ask awkward questions about who was in the front seat with their partner, 20 miles from the office and 3 miles from a motel at 2pm on a weekday. After a few months and a lot of complaints they started blurring the passenger side...

There were also stories after 9/11 of people surviving who should have been at work on the exact floor where one of the planes hit, because they were in fact at their lover's apartment instead of work that morning. But I don't know if any of these were ever verified.

Georgyporky · 03/02/2025 11:15

Two colleagues of mine were having an affair.
The man had a car crash on an icy road & broke his leg.
The crash was 0.5 miles from OW's house, when his wife was told he was visiting his DM 30 miles away in the opposite direction.
End of both marriage & affair.

Kbroughton · 03/02/2025 11:18

A friend of may parents found out that her husband had been having a long term affair (over 20 years) with a mutual friend of theirs after her husband had a serious stroke. He was left partially paralysed, had to give up his job etc. She found out when he was in hospital as she was clearing things out ready for him coming home when she would be his long term carer. She left him! And the affair partner left him. He is in assisted living now. His children, while they stayed in his life are still very angry with him. not sure the years of extra martial sex were worth it!

Yes, that's stayed with me. I think it was ER, as I don't watch Grey's.

Crashed it back from bedroom farce into cruel reality.

honeylulu · 03/02/2025 11:24

I remember an awful news story from several years ago. A couple drowned in a hotel swimming pool, neither could swim and they were larking around in the shallow end but there was an unmarked sudden deep change in level. Someone heard them screaming and splashing but assumed they were just having fun and didn't check.

The man was married to someone else and they'd used fake names for the booking so it took some time to work out who they actually were.

Just awful, what a horrible way to go and how horrible for the poor man's wife to lose her husband and find out he was a cheat in one fell swoop.
