Anyone discovered an affair after an accident?

I recently watched a TV programme about a woman who found out her husband was having an affair after he'd been involved in a serious accident which also involved his affair partner. She thought he was away on business.

Has this happened to anyone in real life?

How shocking it must be and you must have so many questions in your head!

If I had an example myself I wouldn't have asked if anyone knows of someone it's actually happened to!

Journalist response right there!

I think this was The World According to Garp by John Irving. fabulous book and a great film starring Robin Williams.

Didn't this happen in American Gods as well?

Not quite the same but I have a friend who accidentally scraped a very expensive car in a shop car park. Car driver was in the car at the time, so friend knocked on the window and apologised and was ready to pass over insurance details. Driver paused for a moment and then said 'no, It's okay, not a problem' at which point my friend noticed that the passenger was a young, very glamorous looking woman compared to the driver who was in his 60s.

Friend concluded that the only reason driver told her not to bother was he was somewhere he shouldn't be, with a woman he shouldn't have been with!

I discovered the guy I'd been seeing for 10 months was, in fact, still in a relationship with his ex (rather than just sharing a house with her for financial reasons as he had told me) when a (non-mutual) friend posted a photo of her from a music festival and he was, entirely by chance, in the background holding hands with his "ex". The chances of it happening were infinitesimal, he didn't know my friend at all and just happened to be behind her as she was taking the photo.

Turned out he had been telling her he was away with work when he was staying with me, and telling me he was away with work when he was staying with her. He literally split his week between us for nearly a year and neither of us had any idea. Other than being a very private person, he had given me no cause for suspicion whatsoever, I was totally blindsided and couldn't believe I'd been so stupid! At least it was an easy break up for me though!

I don't necessarily think the OP is a journo or a troll (although interesting that she has either joined/name-changed for this thread) but asking people to share stories of someone else's heartbreak for no good reason seems unpleasantly voyueristic.

Isn't that just human nature though. People are in general unpleasantly voyeuristic. That's why true crime is such a popular category for TV/Films/Podcasts/Books.

I'm finding the thread interesting. I cant' say I have my own example of an affair coming to light like that, but I did catch my Dad at it with his customers wife. Both of whom he apparently couldn't stand. People are weird.

also the broken nose story reminded me-not quite the same but when I were young I was on a night out with two friends, one a man one a woman.

Woman got very drunk. Man was also quite drunk. I was okay. Man said he was going home. He lived in the same direction as woman but she lived slightly further. I asked him to drop woman off in his taxi and he said no because It's further. I gave the tight sod £5 and asked him to drop her off first.

I was okay, so I went to a different pub. Man rang me about half an hour later saying he had a black eye.

'How on earth do you have a black eye? You literally left in a taxi home?'

Apparently when I bundled them into a taxi they'd began snogging not long after. They'd pulled up at woman's house still malling and kissing one another and woman's boyfriend at the time (who was babysitting woman's young child, not his so that she could go on the night out) had opened the curtains when he heard the taxi pull up, seen the situation, dragged my male friend from the taxi and yes.....

The couple are still together with three more children so I guess all worked out!

Another fictional example is the 1980 TV play Richard’s Things which stars a very young Amanda Redman as the OW.

I'm not sure if the affair was exposed to the involved parties, but I once had a man in custody who was asked if he wanted anyone notified he'd been arrested. Gave me a name and number of his girlfriend. I rang her and after she confirmed her name and that she was his girlfriend, I told her he was in Custody and she said, 'I think maybe you'd better call his wife?' and hung up.

Went down to the cell to tell him that his girlfriend said to call his wife, and he was so non-plussed. Just said no, can't call his wife as she's off on holiday with the kids! The mind boggles.

Not an accident, I know someone whose husband was supposed to be away on a camping and walking holiday in Scotland.

Turns out he’s actually abroad with some woman.
He was due home the day after the volcanic eruptions in Iceland grounded all flights.

I laughed at your post because I was imagining the panic that man felt when his flight got cancelled. haha. serve him right.

I had a very similar story. Saw my partner kissing "she's just a good friend" on the back scene of a news reporting episode - about 500 miles from where he supposedly was on a business trip. I don't even usually watch video news, I saw it accidentally on the TV in the corporate canteen. If I didn't, I honestly would not know until now, he was excellent at opsec.

I know someone who found out from her deceased husband's will that he had left money to a child born outside the marriage, same month as their joint youngest DC.

Not an accident but a prank. Back in the 90s when the national lottery had just started family member of my BF decided to record the lottery one week then get her DH a lottery ticket with those numbers for his birthday. Bit of a mean prank but it massively backfired.

She put the recording on instead of the actual lottery show when people were over at their house for his birthday. He jumped up, said he won the lottery, told them all to F off as he was having an affair and running away with her!!

I'd say it did her a massive favour. Did she divorce him?

It happened to our friends. Very long and what everyone thought was the perfect marriage (always acted super loved up in public). One morning the husband came hime holding the hand of a 5-year-old child. He said "I'm so sorry but this is my child- his mother just died this morning in a car accident."

Bloody hell. How is the wife and child now?

I work in a specialist travel insurance provider. We had a case of a man who had gone on a "business trip". In reality he had gone on a cruise with the OW. He had a heart attack and died. His wife was notified and was clearly shocked as events became clear. It got really messy as she was furious. She refused to have the body repatriated and sadly, he was eventually off boarded and cremated alone in Portugal. Wife refused any ceremony. His ashes were scattered locally.

Why sadly? He deserved it and she was right and strong to do what was best for her and not to fit society's expectations.

CerealPosterHere · 03/02/2025 12:16

Oh God yes, this story was all over our local news and eventually the daily mail.

A woman was round at her "male friend's" house when she slipped off the toilet and "landed" on the toilet brush handle which went up her bum, snapped off and disappeared. So woman and her friend go to a&e where they do a bum inspection and declare no toilet brush handle to be found. Woman and her "friend" insist it's there still so she has an xray which also shows nothing.

So she is sent home. She's married btw so goes home to her husband.

She carried on suffering pain so sees her gp, goes back to hospital....all this over a period of months!!! Eventually gets an mri which shows an embedded toilet brush handle - remember plastic does not show up on xray. So it had gone up her rectum and then due to the force pierced the tissue, gone at an angle into the flesh at the side of her rectum.

She obviously has to tell her husband now as they schedule surgery. Her husband believed every word of it if I recall from the interview/quotes in the paper and was very cross about all the local sniggering.

Has a very sad outcome which is why it was in the press as she died on the operating table due to massive blood loss and there was an inquest.

edited as I've found a link - 2 years not months she had a 6" toilet brush handle lodged up there

I remember an awful news story from several years ago. A couple drowned in a hotel swimming pool, neither could swim and they were larking around in the shallow end but there was an unmarked sudden deep change in level. Someone heard them screaming and splashing but assumed they were just having fun and didn't check.

The man was married to someone else and they'd used fake names for the booking so it took some time to work out who they actually were.

Just awful, what a horrible way to go and how horrible for the poor man's wife to lose her husband and find out he was a cheat in one fell swoop.

This happened in a country house-type hotel very close to where I used to live. It was an awful tragedy and a huge story, that two people had drowned in a smallish indoor hotel pool. It took a while to emerge that the couple were not married to each other, and the man was with his much younger mistress.
It seemed the young woman had got into difficulties in the pool and the man also died trying to save her.
I felt extremely sorry for the man's poor wife,
The hotel permanently closed the pool, filled it in and and tiled over it.

Dexysmidnightstroller · 03/02/2025 12:32

That is the story in the country music song The Caroll County Accident, where the narrator disguises evidence of the affair because the man involved was his father.

Awful tragedy but why all the inverted commas? Nothing to suggest there was anything untoward going on or that it wasn’t just her friend 🤷‍♀️
Mustve been terrible for the family having people speculating and making up stories like that.

😳 my God!

This does seem plausible to me, slipping off the loo drunk could mean landing on the brush next to the loo, with all your weight behind it . Very unfortunate but not impossible.

When those guys were stuck down the mine there was a wife and mistress wasn't there. Was it Mexico?

Yes the Chilli miner's I only know because I remember Russell Howard showing a clip of it. What a welcome home.😳😳😳
