How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

It's ridiculous isnt it, even for 2 small adults. Once you've had a king you never go back and a super is even better.

Doubles just give you elbows and knees all over!

DurinsBane · 17/01/2025 23:55

Try a small double! Standard is 4’6”, small is 4’. Now that is cosy! 😁

Iloveyoubut · 17/01/2025 23:56

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

coldscottishmum · 17/01/2025 23:56

I tried to share DS double bed with him tonight, I moved back to my own king size and he followed (he’s 5) there’s no room for 2 bodies in a double bed!

Bbq1 · 17/01/2025 23:57

We have a super king. Absolutely love it. I doubt we could manage in a double now

InfoSecInTheCity · 17/01/2025 23:57

We've always slept in a standard double and neither of us are small people (5ft 8 and 6ft and both overweight/obese) it's never been a problem. Plenty of space for both of us and we sleep well, DD used to squeeze into the middle till she was about 4 or 5 most nights.

Ha, I remember student days and dh and I sleeping together in a single bed 😂

We have a king size now and still encroach on each others space!

Calochortus · 18/01/2025 00:00

There is no way I’d sleep with DH in a double bed, he rattles around the bed in his sleep and somehow always ends up “snuggled” into my back. It’s the stuff of nightmares! We have a super king and he’s learned to stay to his side of the bed thankfully.

Notgivenuphope · 18/01/2025 00:00

I honestly have no idea.

MyJoyousTraybake · 18/01/2025 00:01

I love our super king, have sacrificed floor space in our bedroom, and had long search to find very narrow bedside tables but it's worth it. Especially now we have Ddog who likes to starfish while sleeping 😆

Mirenamirena · 18/01/2025 00:01

DP’s parents slept in a 4ft bed, I assume all their married life. No idea how they did it. We have a Superking but I sleep even better in “doubles” on holiday when it’s two three foot beds pushed together.

elliejjtiny · 18/01/2025 00:03

Dh and I sleep in a double, it's fine (apart from when I fall asleep reading my book and the book hits dh in the face) and I'm fat so take up more space than average. We slept in 2 singles pushed together a couple of years ago, not sure if that is the equivalent size of a king or a queen. I hated it, I used to wake up and not know if he was there or not.

TheOtherAgentJohnson · 18/01/2025 00:04

My in-laws have double beds, inexplicably because they have big rooms. It just seems parsimonious to me, and impossible to sleep in when we have superkings at home.

TheSmallAssassin · 18/01/2025 00:04

I feel like my husband is too far away in a king size. It's OK when we're away, but I wouldn't like it all the time.

tightarses · 18/01/2025 00:04

This is why husband sleeps in a different room. Me, the dog and occasionally grandchild are very happy with our arrangement 😴

JC03745 · 18/01/2025 00:06

I agree OP. Humans have been getting taller and bigger for many years!
DH and I did live with a double in a static caravan whilst renovating, but it was a means to and end and I would never return to it again unless absolutely necessary. We aren't living in Victorian times now!
I never book hotels that don't have a king size as a minimum.

SabbatWheel · 18/01/2025 00:09

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

Tintackedsea · 18/01/2025 00:09

At fil's the spare room has an old, very soft double mattress that dips in the middle. Dh rolls snoringly into it so I'm perched on the edge of the bed fending him off with one foot and the other foot on the floor so I don't roll out.

AND the sky light doesn't have a blackout blind so it's wake up at LITERAL sparrow fart.

I come home physically, mentally and emotionally broken.

smallchange · 18/01/2025 00:12

We've got a double. It's fine. I'm ok with not stretching out.

When we stay with my parents we're in a King and that's fine too but we usually end up taking around the same amount of space up. I guess it's habit.

PragmaticIsh · 18/01/2025 00:14

We're both tall so a king size is essential for length. Even with that, we need a super king size duvet on a king size bed in order not to get that gap where you stretch it across.

I adore DH but the thought of him, or anyone, touching me in my sleep is awful, just intolerable. I need to sleep near-but-not-touching.

WomanFromTheNorth · 18/01/2025 00:15

I can't even sleep in a double on my own. Far too small. We have moved down from a superking to a king and it feels so, so small.

NoisyBear · 18/01/2025 00:17

Iloveyoubut · 17/01/2025 23:56

Haha I was just thinking about this. When dh and I met we were very young and in houseshares. We would fall asleep intertwined in a single bed all romantic and sexy. Now over 20 years later I can't stand being touched when I'm trying to sleep, lord knows how we did it.

Incakewetrust · 18/01/2025 00:17

In my late teens/early twenties, my bf at the time and I shared a single for a few months before we could buy our double and it seemed absolutely fine 😂 looking back it just seems insane!

My DH and sleep in a super king and anything smaller is just too uncomfortable!
When we first got together, we shared a double just fine but I think we've grown horizontally over the years 😂

ZiggyZowie · 18/01/2025 00:17

2 single beds pushed together

Single duvet on each bed in matching covers.
