How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

Wish someone would design a bed with a remote control floor to ceiling partition down the middle, similar to a limousine.

You can have all the 'fun' of the bedroom then bring out the partition when you're finished, none of that trying to cuddle 'young and in love' stuff that is torture for this peri-menopausal hot sweaty grump.

ILs only have single beds, even though the rooms are large. For sure they discourage overnight guests. They have a super king.

We stayed in last weekend. It was awful, DP enjoyed a cuddly sleep. I did not. I would like a super king, my own bedroom and my own bathroom. I love him very much. I would love my own spaces.

Charliecatpaws · 18/01/2025 00:56

DH and I manage a double with two cats easily 🤷🏼‍♀️

Simonjt · 18/01/2025 00:57

We have a superking, but we sleep close (he’s currently asleep half on me) so we both fit under one of the single duvets.

We've always slept in a standard double and neither of us are small people (5ft 8 and 6ft and both overweight/obese) it's never been a problem. Plenty of space for both of us and we sleep well, DD used to squeeze into the middle till she was about 4 or 5 most nights.

Similar story here. Plus, when we do go away and stay somewhere with a bigger double, it feels like luxury!

2 single beds pushed together

Single duvet on each bed in matching covers.

Bliss

This is the dream. Currently have a king size. I hate being touched in bed.

We bought a superking because we had a cat and we naively thought it would give us all enough room.

It's amazing how much space one small tabby can take up.

At 5'7", I find single and double too short. My BF at the time was 6ft+, so I got a king. I moved CatOfHate in from DM's house and ended things with the ex, only to find that a tomcat can somehow occupy the same space as a 6ft+ bloke.

WhiteLily1 · 18/01/2025 01:10

I’ve slept in a standard double for 25 years with my husband. We are normal sized people 5’6 and 5’10. Never been a problem and plenty of space?
Honestly don’t get how people don’t manage unless both obese perhaps?

oakleaffy · 18/01/2025 01:12

Iloveyoubut · 17/01/2025 23:56

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

Yes, a single bed- no problem at all!
Depends on the sizes of the occupants though- if both slim, which most young people are, it's not a big deal.

More important is a king size duvet- nothing worse than someone taking the duvet when they turn over.

selffellatingouroborosofhate · 18/01/2025 01:13

There's two camps on this thread:

  • Likes sleeping touching the other bed occupant.
  • Nope! Nopenopenopenope! to sleeping touching the other bed occupant.

I'm a noper, unless the lifeform touching me is CatOfHate.

I'm single now, but I shared a double bed with a partner for about 10 years and it was fine. However, when we went on a trip and slept in a king size bed, it felt absolutely huge and like you said, so luxurious. I can understand why couples prefer to go with a king size bed, if they have space for it.

Start adding in knee pillows, body pillows, maternity pillows, etc and see how that goes for you.

I didn't see your comment before posting, but agree- tallness isn't an issue in a normal double {or even a 3 foot single} but if a couple are heavier/bulkier then it could be much more of an issue, like when one is in a normal seat on the train or plane and someone sits down engulfing you and taking up your space.

NattyTurtle59 · 18/01/2025 01:20

Well my DH and I managed fine, and we are both reasonably tall. I would rather have a bit of space in the bedroom and a small bed than a large bed and little space.

I disagree. In a standard bed, my feet poke out of the end.

Moving around at night is also a problem. Medical issues mean that there is no sleeping position that I can stay in all night without being in pain, so I wake up and turn over several times every night. The extra 6" from a king gives me room to do that without clobbering my bedmate.

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

I think it’s just that if you get used to something bigger then it’s difficult to go back
My parents have always slept in a double bed and it looks so small to me now but they have never had any issue…. Well none that they have spoken about anyway and they have been married for over 50 years

Chicklette · 18/01/2025 01:28

Notgivenuphope · 18/01/2025 00:00

I honestly have no idea.

Sadly we have a double. Can’t really afford to replace it and the bed sheets with anything bigger. The kids, now 11 and 12, still try to creep in at night but it’s way to hot and small for that!

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 18/01/2025 01:30

It is madness that something with only an additional 50% width can be misleadingly labelled as a 'double'.

It's ironic that, in a world where beds called 'superking' size exist, it's the so-called doubles that actually only feel as big as a cigarette packet Grin

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 18/01/2025 01:31

Dh and I are fat short-arses and we share a standard double bed. We're not cuddly sleepers either - in fact, I hate being touched when trying to sleep - but we sleep just fine. Lucky, really, since we can't afford a bigger bed and wouldn't have the room anyway.

Lidlisthebusiness · 18/01/2025 01:32

My husband lost his mind and suggested we downsize from our king to a double. I countered by suggesting we go up to a superking! We're both slim people, but he moves around so much in his sleep I need to not be squished right up against him. Add in a couple of children that still get in with us, and a double would be absurd.

AConcernedCitizen · 18/01/2025 01:32

On a similar note, we went on holiday last year and one of the places we stayed had two separate duvets on the bed! Apparently this isn't uncommon but despite traveling a lot for work and leisure, I've never experienced it before.

Absolute game changer! Haven't quite convinced the other half to adopt this tradition at home yet but I'm working on it!

WildFlowerBees · 18/01/2025 01:34

We have a super king, it was utter bliss until the cat stole it. Now dh has all the room and I'm piggy in the middle with the cat who refuses to sleep on the edge and must have full contact with a limb at all times.

We had to share a double in a hotel for a night a few years ago. Worst night ever, I don't know how others manage to sleep when you're constantly touching the other person.

Undersecretary · 18/01/2025 01:35

I love sharing a double! I didn't realise people felt so strongly about it, I quite like the fact we're so close. We actively chose to buy another double when we changed a few years ago. The only reason I've thought about a bigger bed recently is so our kids can climb in a bit more comfortably, but that's it.

Plus, if we upsized I'd have to get all new bed linen so for that reason I'm out.

Ivyiris · 18/01/2025 01:36

Easily. It's what you are used to.

My neighbours were giving away two new sheets {pure cotton} and I took them for use as dust sheets- However the lovely pristine quality of them made me decide to use them on bed - but they are HUGE - they touch the floor each side -managing them after washing is quite a feat- they are like sails.

They must have a large bed- or maybe not, which is why they got rid of the extra large sheets which must have cost a lot of money.
