How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

Me, DH and a magic expanding cat (he's 3 times the size asleep as he is awake) in a standard double here because we live in an area where property prices are more than double the national average and this is the size of property I could afford. In fact when he first moved in we shared a 4ft double for a year which I had when I was single to give more floor space.

We're both tall but both slim, never had a particular issue with space.

I love sharing a double! I didn't realise people felt so strongly about it, I quite like the fact we're so close. We actively chose to buy another double when we changed a few years ago. The only reason I've thought about a bigger bed recently is so our kids can climb in a bit more comfortably, but that's it.

Plus, if we upsized I'd have to get all new bed linen so for that reason I'm out.

You can still be as close as you want to in a king or superking - except it's then an active choice rather than having no alternative but to cling on to avoid tumbling out!!

Threeboystwocatsandadog · 18/01/2025 01:47

We have just moved into a smaller bedroom to let ds3 have the big room. Dh suggested that we would have more room space if we swapped our kingsize bed for a double. Eh! No way.

Sleepingsound · 18/01/2025 01:48

Husband and I shared a small double - 4ft - for yeeeears, until we moved out of our teeny flat a few months ago. We are 5ft 10 and 6ft 3, and had a toddler in the middle for the last year of living there. Was never an issue.

We now have a superking because the kids love to get in with us and it’s brilliant. Still haven’t got over the novelty of having to shoop across the bed, like going on a little voyage, to see him.

MrsCatE · 18/01/2025 01:57

I'm small and MrCat is tall but we have SuperKing bed - with different mattresses i.e you can opt for soft, medium, firm and they zip up in a robust way so you wouldn't know it wasn't a single mattress. Also, adopted the German habit of separate, single Duvets. Changing massive SuperKing duvet covers was an exhausting wrestling match. I also prefer seasonal duvets - hate being too hot - but MrCat not that bothered.

I don't even sleep in the same room. We have two king sized to ourselves. I need space and low temperature at night thank you.

I’m single and sleep diagonally across my king size bed.

Ill be honest, one of the things I dread about ever getting into another relationship is the thought of sharing a bed with a man - I don’t think i could bear it!

Snap, but super king size!

When I moved house, my dad was helping and saying "if the bed fits..."
Me "WHEN the bed fits, there are walls coming down before I change the size of the bed" Grin

fivebyfivebuffy · 18/01/2025 02:12

I do share it with this lump who is nearly 7kg and likes to stretch out

How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???
AyrnotAir · 18/01/2025 02:37

I couldn't deal with a double. We have a super king and if staying at hotels here or abroad I always make sure there is at least a king or wouldn't book and check reviews to make sure they are comfy. Sleeps important to me and I don't want my DH snoring in my ear. We have a cuddle and chat then go our seperate ways to sleep.

icclemunchy · 18/01/2025 02:39

I share a double with my gf but couldn't with my bf.

When she stays here we all squeeze into a queen. Top of the list for when we finish the loft conversion is a bigger bed!

LisaJohnsonsFacebookMole · 18/01/2025 02:42

It's uncivilised. The middle classes and the rich had the right idea back in the day: separate bedrooms for spouses! Or separate beds at a bare minimum.

BettyBardMacDonald · 18/01/2025 02:43

People used to be a great deal smaller.

CrowleyKitten · 18/01/2025 03:02

we have a 4ft/small double. but we're snugglers . early on, we slept in my at the time single bed, and were fine in that too.

tends to be me spooning his back, although sometimes we roll over the other way, and the cat sleeping on my ribcage. we love our snuggle time.

SquashPenguin · 18/01/2025 03:05

Anything smaller than a Superking is horrific. Well I suppose a king is alright at a push, but I refuse to believe anyone saying they prefer a double for sharing over anything bigger. Double beds are bloody awful.

VeryQuaintIrene · 18/01/2025 03:13

I detest kingsized beds because I always sleep on the very edge of whatever bed I have, as does Mrs Irene so they are a terrible waste of space for us and make me feel weirdly agoraphobic.

the80sweregreat · 18/01/2025 03:27

Separate rooms and beds is the way to go if you have the room and so on.

HereBeWormholes · 18/01/2025 03:36

Separate Room solidarity here! I'm restless, he snores... me being awake now at 3:30am is quite typical (I'm trying to Mumsnet the wibblies from a nightmare away! 😁)

(Loving the stretchy cats here - do you find they start off small, then grow as they relax and let their cat-clenching muscles go?)

Nat6999 · 18/01/2025 04:12

Late dp & I shared a double bed for years, no problem.

I can't imagine sleeping with a single duvet. I have a double bed as it's the only thing I can squeeze in to the single bedroom- dc share the double room. I only share with ddog who is a 6kg Jack Russell but still have a super king duvet so I can wrap up. I'd have to at least opt for 2 doubles in your situation.

mrssunshinexxx · 18/01/2025 05:51

@InfoSecInTheCity wow that sounds comfy and safe for your daughter. 😳

Flicitytricity · 18/01/2025 05:55

Separate rooms, double bed and a labrador that is making me consider getting a kingsize😁

We've always slept in a standard double and neither of us are small people (5ft 8 and 6ft and both overweight/obese) it's never been a problem. Plenty of space for both of us and we sleep well, DD used to squeeze into the middle till she was about 4 or 5 most nights.

Ha ha me and dh same height - 30 years
We did have a king size at a premier inn last year which was fantastic but our double is lovely.
We also have a 3/4 (queen) in the spare room we've used happily.
It can nick the covers though , despite the duvet being a king Grin

AntiHop · 18/01/2025 00:39

Dh and I have only ever had a normal double. Our house is too small for a king. Dd also joins us at some point in the night.

I thought double beds were the norm. Never slept in a king size or bigger.

TickingAlongNicely · 18/01/2025 06:04

At our house, we have a Superking.
At DHs House, its only a 3/4 size bed (furnished work accommodation).

We can fit in 3/4 bed... but often one of us moves to the airbed in the middle of the night. It just get too hot and neither of us can move.

Our bed was the only piece of furniture we took with us when we in accommodation "overseas" for two years. (We were abroad for more than 2 years, but continental Europe is a land move, overseas is a sea move with less allowance)

DP’s parents slept in a 4ft bed, I assume all their married life. No idea how they did it. We have a Superking but I sleep even better in “doubles” on holiday when it’s two three foot beds pushed together.

We have an emperor bed which is two 3.6ft mattresses and divans inside a sleugh bed frame.

If i move, my DH won't feel it and ditto me.

Holidays are never comfortable as nothing beats our own bed!
