How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

Yes this. Happy Days.😄

Whatanidiot123 · 18/01/2025 06:14

Ha - me too @Iloveyoubut and DH is 6’5 so no idea how we managed it. Now we have a king size but for the last 7 years there’s always been a child in the middle. We sleep fine and don’t feel too crowded.

I rule out any holiday rentals with less than a king size usually or else what happens now is that any doubles are occupied by one adult and one child so it’s not quite as cramped.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 18/01/2025 06:18

I keep trying to tell my parents this. We sleep in their bed when we visit and I don't know how they haven't gone mad. They have more than enough space for a bigger bed.

Onlyadaughter · 18/01/2025 06:21

Ha that's so funny. I was literally just stretching in bed thinking how nice it is to not have to share my (double!) bed with my duvet-hogging ex anymore when I saw this post! 😁

SallyWD · 18/01/2025 06:23

I couldn't bear it. We have a super king and I wouldn't want anything smaller.

lifebow · 18/01/2025 06:28

As young lovers we could sleep in my single in my student digs and get up to plenty on that bed! Now we have a super king with a lot more room and a lot lot lot less activity!

OP you brought back a good memory of young love for me! Thanks

We've always slept in a standard double and neither of us are small people (5ft 8 and 6ft and both overweight/obese) it's never been a problem. Plenty of space for both of us and we sleep well, DD used to squeeze into the middle till she was about 4 or 5 most nights.

Yes, this was me, but if you spend a good few nights in a king, you'll see how much better it is. You don't miss what you never had, but once you realise how blissful it is to have more room, you won't look back.

Wannabegreenfingers · 18/01/2025 06:52

I've only ever had a double. I'm currently single, but it's never been an issue with a partner.

kikisparks · 18/01/2025 06:58

We have a super king and I still end up squashed to one side with DD lying on me 😂 but I agree a double is such a squash!

I remember doing this in a small single at uni

RobinEllacotStrike · 18/01/2025 07:01

I sleep in a king on my own - usually with one or two cats. There's no way I'm sleeping with another person in here. No room & no inclination.

You snugglers 2 in a double are impressive.

ThatSchoolOfficeLady · 18/01/2025 07:20

For the same reason they manage on an average wage, as a single parent, in a flat, send their kids to state school etc etc. Because the average life/choices in the UK appear to be a long way away from the average life/choices of the most vocal mumsnetters.

ClassicBBQ · 18/01/2025 07:28

We have a superking and it's so hard having to sleep in a double on holidays. I hate being touched while I'm sleeping and it's always freezing because the double duvet has a huge gap at the sides where it doesn't quite cover you both.

Mew2 · 18/01/2025 07:30

We share a king size at home. But at my parents it's a small double (4foot), and that's a squeeze- I am 5foot 10 and him 6 foot 2, I am less overweight than I was and its not comfortable for more than a few nights...

Anything smaller than super king and I’m not interested.

SheilaFentiman · 18/01/2025 07:40

We had an emperor for a bit (two mattresses on one base) but switched down to a super king. This was after 15 years of a double in our old house. Love out current bed.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 18/01/2025 07:40

Super king, separate duvets or separate beds. If I'm booking a hotel and it's not clear I book a twin room.

loulouljh · 18/01/2025 07:42

Nothing worse than arriving for a weeks holiday to find just a double bed! In fact its ow non-negotiable it has to have a king.

Changingname1988 · 18/01/2025 07:43

We share a double.

The idea of the person I love accidentally touching me in the night doesn’t fill me with horror, but I can see I’m clearly in the minority here!

Ihateboris · 18/01/2025 07:43

I bloody love my Super King size bed, and I live on my own (although I sometimes have a labrador sleep with me). The only downside is changing the bedding is a monumental pain in the arse!

LoafofSellotape · 17/01/2025 23:58

Me too,now we have a super king!

And me!

teebles64 · 18/01/2025 07:49

DH and I have shared a double for the last 40 years. I love to snuggle up next to him and we both sleep like logs. I feel lost in a king size if on holiday. I guess it's just what you get used to.

ExtraDisorganised · 18/01/2025 07:50

I think it's just what you get used to. We were fine in a normal double for the first 15 years of our marriage, we did move up to a king at that point but don't have room for a superking, they feel too big when we stay in hotels that have them. We don't sleep touching but that is possible even in the narrow double (Queen?) one we share at FIL's.

Sparxdislike · 18/01/2025 07:52

I guess it depends on heights and size? Me and my husband are tall so we had a double when we were younger. It was nice to snuggle but small when we stretched out. We're both more comfortable in a king. My teen has a double and looks perfectly comfortable.
