How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

We have a superking and that feels too small sometimes

I love our super king, have sacrificed floor space in our bedroom, and had long search to find very narrow bedside tables but it's worth it. Especially now we have Ddog who likes to starfish while sleeping 😆

Same, but two DDogs! 🤣

I sleep in a very old bed that defies sizing but it's huge and the top of the mattress is hip-high. I live alone and the dog sleeps on his dog blanket on one corner.

I can't imagine sleeping in anything smaller. Or lower.

QuizzlyBears · 19/01/2025 21:08

Also team super king here and my only complaint is how expensive the bedding can be!

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 19/01/2025 22:15

I used to have a single bed when house sharing and a friend came to stay once, and we shred the bed. Didn't think twice and had boyfriends sleep over too without giving it a second thought.
Just felt normal.

When I moved on to a double, oh wow, so much space!!!

Again, shared the bed with boyfriends and had one when I got married, all fine.

Then upgraded to a king, oh wow, even more space!! Love it.

Have stayed over at friends with doubles and we just can't sleep. Too squished in, not long enough and uncomfortable.

Think it's what you're used to.

Same as showering with DH in a small cubicle shower when we first met.
Now i wonder how two of us even fitted and managed to shower.

Titsywoo · 19/01/2025 22:31

We have a kingsize as our room isn't big enough for a super king but it is the right size for us and a good amount of room to spread out. No way could I sleep in something smaller. DHs mum and her partner sleep in a standard double - he is 6ft something and not a slight man. I don't know how they do it or why. There is plenty of space in their room and they aren't short of money. Very odd.

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

I remember when DH and I first got together and I had some romantic notion of getting an antique 4ft bed!
We have a standard double, we replaced it recently (bedstead only) and I regret not getting a king-size but DH was against it and it would have meant new matress, new duvet, bed linen etc
But when we go away and have a king or super king I think it's bliss!

@Yoonimum When was your DH's CPAP machine last serviced? How old is it?

DH has one and its absolutely silent! All I can't hear is very quiet breath from him- nothing from the machine.

pollymere · 20/01/2025 00:02

We have a double and have had our DS sleep in between us. It's now the cat. When we're cuddled up we only take up 2/3rds of the bed. It's fine. I always feel we could get another person in there with a King bed! We DO have a king-size duvet however.

His new one is almost silent so it's fine. I think it's new but at the very least has been recently serviced. They can also monitor how effective it is remotely. We moved some months ago and in our last place he was the longest CPAP user they had but they stopped following him up. The service here (completely different region) is much better.

DH and I sleep in a standard double with no problems. We're frequently joined by our whippet too, although I do kick her out if she starts stretching and poking her claws into us (she has her own bed under the desk in our bedroom). It probably helps that DH is 5' 8" and I'm 5' 0", and neither of us is overweight. We've never considered going bigger, in fact we've recently bought a new double bed which we're very happy with.

lilkitten · 20/01/2025 15:05

We have so much room between us in our standard double, you could fit a third person. We're both only average size so I don't know how people don't have space

It's not about lying there in straight lines, then having space between you, it's about having space to extend your legs, an arm, starfish a bit, stick your bum out etc without imposing at all on the other person or having limbs hanging off the bed. You don't know what bliss you're missing!

My DD has starfished since she was tiny, when I share a bed with her on holiday she takes over at least 3/4 of a double 😂I'm generally in a straight state and I guess my DP must be too

We live in a Victorian cottage and the bedroom literally wouldn’t fit a bed bigger than a double. We’ve managed for the 30 years we’ve been married, and we’re not small: 5’7” and 6’2”. Envious of those who can afford bigger houses! (We’re in London).

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

Same. Double with a Kingsize duvet. It’s fine

I live in a tiny 2 bed new build flat and use the single bedroom so dc can share the double. I still fit a double bed and could probably stretch to a king if I ditched the bedside table. Not necessary as it's just me and the little dog in here but i definitely would if I had to share with an adult man. Depends on priorities i suppose.

ExtraDisorganised · 27/01/2025 07:56

I'm the other way, would hate to do without a bedside table, that's what we'd have to get rid of to move from King to superking and there's no way. But I read in bed and like having my drink there etc.

My bedside table had to go when we moved things around to get a cot in the room and can confirm it's such a pain. I'm thinking of ordering the attached to go on the wall for my phone and glasses at least.

@liveforsummer Your new build really isn't that tiny if you can fit a king size in the smaller second bedroom! (Assuming you realise they're longer as well as wider?)

Oh yes, glasses is another thing, I can't get out of bed without my glasses, blind as a bat
