How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

DH & I are exactly the same! Never any issues 🤷🏻‍♀️

I remember being young and dumb in love and could sleep in a single bed with a boyfriend. Bloody stupid.
Don't think I've ever had smaller than a king size with my husband, but we have shared a double on various holidays. Ick, get off me, will you. It's just limbs all over the place, isn't it?! And shite mattresses where you desperately try to keep away from each other but always end up in the dip in the middle 🙄no thanks.
We had an extension done in our most recent house, the extension is our bedroom, and I purposely had it designed to accommodate a super king size bed.
I'll never go back. Never.

How much do you both flail about in the night? It's never occurred to me to be repulsed by the occasional leg or arm touching mine in the night when it's the person I also choose to have sex with

Did you mean to sound so unpleasant and judgy?
if yes, have a bloody day off will you 🙄

Like others it was so cute to cuddle in a single when I was young. Dear god not now. I have a double just for me and I love a big hotel bed. Even though I'm small my next bed is going to be huge! Just for me!

Deathraystare · 18/01/2025 18:04

This is what people have to do if they have small bedrooms. Mum and Dad got a bed in an Allders (remember them?) sale for a fiver, King Size because most of the houses were on the small size or at least my Dad thought so.

housemaus · 18/01/2025 18:06

We had a double for the first 5 years of living together and didn't think anything of it - I think you don't notice til you sleep in a bigger bed regularly. We got a superking when we moved house and we sleep SO much better now. We're both very wriggly sleepers though!

Separate Room solidarity here! I'm restless, he snores... me being awake now at 3:30am is quite typical (I'm trying to Mumsnet the wibblies from a nightmare away! 😁)

(Loving the stretchy cats here - do you find they start off small, then grow as they relax and let their cat-clenching muscles go?)

mine curls in a little loaf on my ribcage, and rests his chin on my face, and purrs continually. I love it. he occasionally sleeps IN the bed. when he does that he tends to either curl in the crook of someones bent knees, or stretched out along the back of straight legs. he's slept on or in the bed since a tiny kitten. if it's too hot, he sleeps on the bedside table or the headboard. and no nighttime zoomies. bedtime is bedtime for him too.

I feel like one of those smug mums whose babies sleep through the night with no issues 😆

stanleypops66 · 18/01/2025 18:53

Until we moved to our current house we always slept in a double, usually with the dog at the bottom. Now we have a king I wonder how we ever fitted in, but we did!

For the same reason they manage on an average wage, as a single parent, in a flat, send their kids to state school etc etc. Because the average life/choices in the UK appear to be a long way away from the average life/choices of the most vocal mumsnetters.

in fairness, I don't think our 4ft frame or 4ft mattress were any cheaper than a double. but much more practical for us space wise, and plenty big enough for us. we like that it gives us a bit more room around the bed (it would be crowded otherwise)
the downside is things like when we needed a new mattress, we were limited to the ones that came in a 4ft, love our Seally Alder though. SO comfortable. and sometimes fitted sheets are a bit baggy. not often though. you can get 4ft ones, but not as easily, and often only from more expensive places.

but as I said. we're snugglers . always have been.

Couples who enjoy sleeping in a double bed - are you petite and/or skinny?

DH and I are tall, large framed. No way can we sleep properly in a standard double.
We also check the beds before booking a holiday. Has to be super king or separate rooms.

I am working on DH to agree to an emperor bed at home. Loads of room to sprawl for us, and no one breathing in my face!

oh definitely not. I'm 5.6 and chubby, he's 6.3 and chubby, as well as very broad shouldered.
we both tend towards side sleeping, and spooning.

we love our 4ft.

I share a double with my gf but couldn't with my bf.

When she stays here we all squeeze into a queen. Top of the list for when we finish the loft conversion is a bigger bed!

Either I'm really dumb and not understanding the situation or you're in a throuple and I am understanding? 😅

I made the same (wrong) assumption.

Pure as the driven snow we both are!

We prefer triad, but yes we're poly.

Incakewetrust · 19/01/2025 10:34

@icclemunchy ok I understood then 😂 sharing a bed with one person is hard enough! I have no clue how you survive with two!

People have slept in double beds for centuries

But people are much taller and bigger than they were centuries ago!!!
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-23896855

If you look at old beds in stately homes, they are often very short compared to modern beds - not always obvious if they four posters, but the actual mattress part is tiny.

Iloveyoubut · 17/01/2025 23:56

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

Yeah when I was all loved up and half the weight I am now my then husband and I slept in a double bed with no issues

luckylavender · 19/01/2025 11:44

Goady thread. Most people manage perfectly well.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 19/01/2025 18:40

Easily. It's all we've ever known. Apart from when we go on holiday & they're bigger, but they don't make me want to buy one.

SuperBlondie28 · 19/01/2025 19:32

We've always had a King. If we go caravanning (static at Haven site), the double bed is a shocker! Neither overweight but he has broad shoulders and I end up nearly falling off

Iliketulips · 19/01/2025 19:40

We have a standard sized double, but that's probably why it was a condition that if I was allowed more cats (after I lost my first two lovely furballs), they wouldn't be allowed to sleep with us. We'd often have DH on edge, cat in the middle and me squashed inbetween cat in the middle and the other one on the edge.

Foxylass · 19/01/2025 19:46

We love a double. Just bought all new, had the option for a king, have the space too.
We have used king sized beds when away, and we don't like them. Far to much room to get lost in.
We like to be close.

We have holiday lets, some with doubles some with kings and one with a super-king. No complaints and plenty returning guests. We even get compliments about the beds, mostly the doubles.

ElderLemon · 19/01/2025 19:51

Slept in a standard double for 20 years and found it fine. But have a super king now and do really love it.

NewBrightonEel · 19/01/2025 19:53

I have a super king all to myself. I sleep on the edge!

Yoonimum · 19/01/2025 20:20

Is a super king the same size as 2 singles? If so, DH and I think best solution would be a SK frame with 2 single mattresses covered with matching single duvets. Might manage with a SK duvet. We want to be together after 10 years in separate bedrooms due to menopause and his noisy CPAP machine. I'm not so sleep disordered now and he has a new, much quieter machine so we are trying to work out the best system.

JustMeAndTheFish · 19/01/2025 20:28

Hell no. I’m a single in a regular double and that’s about enough room. I actually don’t like sleeping with other people at all… I’m stressed, can’t sleep and end up exhausted.
