How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

I would love a double duvet each, on a super king. DH thinks we'd be separated somehow; I think if we slept better we'd be more up for together time!

Orangebadger · 18/01/2025 00:23

Love our super king! OH is miles away!

We have a double bed with king size duvet and we tend to sleep mostly facing away from each other. We've never thought we were crowded in bed to be honest.

I was just wondering if my DH wrote this! It's exactly what we do.

TwistedWonder · 18/01/2025 00:27

I’m single and sleep diagonally across my king size bed.

Ill be honest, one of the things I dread about ever getting into another relationship is the thought of sharing a bed with a man - I don’t think i could bear it!

poemsandwine · 18/01/2025 00:29

I have a super king on my own. I'm never going back.

BeaAndBen · 18/01/2025 00:32

When we were all skinny and there wasn't central heating a double bed was ok.

Also when young and in love - looking back, I can't believe we shared single beds, but so many of us had to.

Now we're bigger (DH and I, not casting aspersions at the rest of you) and we live in a house we can heat, it's kingsize as a minimum.

Fizbosshoes · 18/01/2025 00:33

We sleep fine in a double. I'm less than 5ft, DH is about 5'9", so smaller than average. I do like a K/S bed when we go on holiday though

Florencelatsy · 18/01/2025 00:34

I have my double bed and king size duvet all to myself. Admittedly I can just about manage my 9 yr old sneaking in weekend mornings so I get extra sleep 😂 Been single nearly 10 yrs and all of my mates think I'm insane when I say my ex and I had separate bedrooms and if I ever got together with someone again I could never share the same bed with them 🤣

ChubbyBubbyBoo · 18/01/2025 00:37

I quite like feeling surrounded by love ones. I remember being 18/19/20 and sharing a single bed happily! Now me and the whole family share a king sized bed. The kids have beds they just don’t like to use them 😅

Readinstead · 18/01/2025 00:37

I never understand why a small child gets a 3ft bed to themself but two adults share 4ft 6". Dh and I now have a kingsize and that little bit of extra space is great. I would prefer a superking but due to built in storage there just isn't enough space.

AntiHop · 18/01/2025 00:39

Dh and I have only ever had a normal double. Our house is too small for a king. Dd also joins us at some point in the night.

At fil's the spare room has an old, very soft double mattress that dips in the middle. Dh rolls snoringly into it so I'm perched on the edge of the bed fending him off with one foot and the other foot on the floor so I don't roll out.

AND the sky light doesn't have a blackout blind so it's wake up at LITERAL sparrow fart.

I come home physically, mentally and emotionally broken.

@Tintackedsea
I hear you ! Not married anymore, but we had a double bed & exh used to always turn to middle of the bed and I was on the end, freezing and so uncomfortable.

BarkPench · 18/01/2025 00:39

This should be an AIBU so we can vote and consign sharing double beds to the bin. Superking feels too small now but there’s nowhere else to go for us!

Breakingmad1 · 18/01/2025 00:40

I think a double is fine. I wouldn’t want to sleep too far apart. I like feeling him rolling over and spooning me in the night.

Iloveyoubut · 17/01/2025 23:56

Ah. I remember when I was so in love I could sleep in a single happily. Well, I vaguely remember 😂

Oh to be 18 again 😅

olderbutwiser · 18/01/2025 00:43

We can’t even sleep in the same room. Slept in a friends guest double this week for just one night and both had to have a nap as soon as we got home the following afternoon.

We have a super king. Absolutely love it. I doubt we could manage in a double now

We bought a superking because we had a cat and we naively thought it would give us all enough room.

It's amazing how much space one small tabby can take up.

RawBloomers · 18/01/2025 00:47

It was fine when I was 20. Now a double feels small when I’m on my own!

Olive567 · 18/01/2025 00:48

Love my king size bed - hated going to hotels with a little spongy double with OH. We're not even big people, no idea how other people manage a standard double with their partners for years on end.

Haha, yes our kitty owns our bed along with all other beds and rooms in the house!

ODFOx · 18/01/2025 00:51

We sleep spooning A double is more than big enough. When we camp the 'double' SIM is 110cm wide and is still plenty.
We both had previous marriages with bigger beds and agree that to sleep touching each other is nice. Added bonus is that DH is a human radiator so we can sleep with the window open (I like the fresh air) without heating on all year round. 🙂

AKettleOfDifferentFish · 18/01/2025 00:51

We have a standard double. DC(5) has climbed into bed on DH's side and I'm currently up BF DC2 😂

Ecclesfreckles · 18/01/2025 00:53

DH and I moved from a King to a Double as our new master is smaller than the old. It's been surprisingly fine but we are both very slim and I'm only 5'3". We like facing away from each other but touching bums or i sleep on my back, he on his front and we hold hands - so don't like being too far apart. My exH and I used to share a small double which never bothered either of us - it never felt small at the time though which I am surprised by having seen the space in a King. I even used to sleep on the king on my own when I was single so should hate smaller beds really! Mattress, duvet and pillow quality - now that I won't compromise on.

NailsHairNipsHeels · 18/01/2025 00:53

I have a superking all to myself at my house DP has a double....I get the best sleep when I'm in his bed BUT. Only if he's there too so strange

Slinkyminky22 · 18/01/2025 00:54

We have a double, I didn't realise it was so uncommon. Toddler in the middle too.
