How does any couple ever sleep in a standard sized double???

We are in a rental tonight and I feel like im in a small box trap with my husband way too close!

How does anyone sleep with another person so close and so little space to move about and stretch???

Double implies it’s a bed for two people but a double bed is definitely not designed for two people who have reached adulthood.

I made the mistake of booking a holiday let that was a double bed and had a week of perching on the edge of the bed trying not to fall out.

Now I only book if the bed is a King - limits the choices a bit but I need sleep over a sea view!

DH and I have only ever had a standard double, it’s fine. Always feel a bit lonely in bigger beds. The dog takes up more room than either of us, tbh. He’s a bed-hogging lump.

RosesAndHellebores · 18/01/2025 08:09

We had a 4'6" bed at the start of our married lives. It's what I had bought when I bought my flat. It was fine.

It's one of those things where once you change to the bigger version, it's hard to go back.

GRCP · 18/01/2025 08:10

Agree - couldn't go back to a double

mitogoshigg · 18/01/2025 08:11

I managed until I was 46, never had a king with exh no issues at all. Now Dh had a king when we met but he's over 6ft. We cope fine in a standard double travelling though (and we quite frankly are fat)

TheBirdintheCave · 18/01/2025 08:14

Husband and I share a double bed. It's plenty big enough. We don't knock into each other in the night or anything 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don't get what the issue is.

Our house is also a tiny new build so we wouldn't be able to fit a kingsized bed in our bedroom (plus other furniture!) even if we wanted to.

Behindthethymes · 18/01/2025 08:17

We love our double. When we sleep
in a king/super king on holidays we feel disconnected and we’re always delighted to get back to our own bed and snuggle up. Obviously we’re weirdos though.

Same. We go to the Maldives next month and almost booked one of the over water villas but they only have double beds! We’re having to slum it in a beach villa but at least it has a king sized bed. <tongue firmly in cheek>

At home we have super king size bed and the kids have doubles. We are very lucky to have the space to allow it.

Lefthanddownnumberone · 18/01/2025 08:22

My DH is over 6 ft I’m tiny - I have a king. Moving to a new house soon and both older kids are getting kings they are delighted! (Currently they are in singles!)

Longsight2019 · 18/01/2025 08:23

Reading from a super king feeling pleased with the investment. I had a small double as a child and that was great when compared to a single.

Pigeonqueen · 18/01/2025 08:23

Dh and I have always had a normal double. We just don’t have space for anything bigger. (Dd aged 21 has the largest room in our house as it’s over the other side of the house and we need to be next to Ds aged 13 who has autism). We’ve just learnt to live with it. Sometimes when we’ve gone on holiday we’ve had two singles pushed together or a king size and it does make our bed seem small. We’re not small people either - both very tall and both a couple of stone overweight 😳😂 been married 15 years so I guess we just put up with each other.

We had an emperor for a bit (two mattresses on one base) but switched down to a super king. This was after 15 years of a double in our old house. Love out current bed.

That's... that's Bedland! 🛌😄

Try a small double! Standard is 4’6”, small is 4’. Now that is cosy! 😁

My DM had a small double in her spare room. In the days when I could go to bed and just sleep until the morning I could share that with dh, no problem, but it’s been years now since I need a king size - always have to check before staying anywhere that it’s not a standard double.

notnorman · 18/01/2025 08:32

My parents master bedroom is only big enough for a double and they live on an estate of a million houses exactly the same- so I guess it depends on your bedroom size when it comes down to it!

Comeonicandoit · 18/01/2025 08:41

For those who couldn’t bear a double… What do you all do when you’re travelling?
We have a king size bed and when I was looking for accommodation on holiday my heart sank when I saw a lot of Air BnBs have doubles. Had to put it low on the priority list as there aren’t many available options where we are going, but can you all manage for a short stay with a double bed or would you not book unless king or super king?

CherryMarigold · 18/01/2025 08:46

DH and I shared a single until a two weeks before DC1 was born. We only switched to a double because DH won it in a raffle!

Now it's king size, although DH would prefer super king as he's 6'5, it would be too cold for me when he works away which is frequently.

QueSyrahSyrah · 18/01/2025 08:47

To the people that can't stand to be touched, I get it, but we sleep in a standard double and manage perfectly well not to touch each other in the night?

We also spent months in a Superking before moving back to our double (we had to move out of our property due to some storm damage) and it's not been anywhere near as hard as I thought it might be to get used to again.

SparklingSpa · 18/01/2025 08:48

It’s impossible.

sawthebrightone · 18/01/2025 08:51

DH is tall and we have a King size at home, but on holiday in doubles we're fine. Neither of us need to move about or spread our limbs out in bed. On my own I'm fine in a single.

JC03745 · 18/01/2025 08:52

I check beforehand and only book a minimum of a king size.

My kids have a small double each. They are 10 and 12.

Haroldwilson · 18/01/2025 08:53

It's just what you're used to. You adjust sleeping habits. DH and I used to have a small double and it was doable, we just couldn't bend or move our limbs all night ;) still an improvement on sharing a single. We've got a super king now.

twilightcafe · 18/01/2025 08:53

Couples who enjoy sleeping in a double bed - are you petite and/or skinny?

DH and I are tall, large framed. No way can we sleep properly in a standard double.
We also check the beds before booking a holiday. Has to be super king or separate rooms.

I am working on DH to agree to an emperor bed at home. Loads of room to sprawl for us, and no one breathing in my face!

SparklingSpa · 18/01/2025 08:53

I travel a lot and book a super king size bed, this is a non negotiable for me.

Tulip32 · 18/01/2025 08:55

Have only ever had a double bed and it is perfectly comfortable.
