Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Mine was a chance serving as a chippy was closing after lunch. I'd gone in to order fish and chips and they said would you like double for the same price as we are closing up.

It was the biggest most succulent fish I'd ever tasted. Just gorgeous. This was 1990 so it really must have been good to still be hankering after the same.

Gay Lane Fisheries in Otley does the best quality and value F&C I've had in years. I think the owners are Polish but I'm not sure. Two of the kindest and politest people I've ever met. I'm looking forward to my next visit (I'm not sure they're open tonight).

Beschoff Bros in Howth, Dublin.

Fish is fresh off the boats and the chips are just so delicious with salt and vinegar on them!

Divine!!!

During lockdown there was proliferation of takeaway food trucks on the road leading to a nearby park, you could sit out on the grass eating amongst other groups without breaking any rules. One of them was a fish and chip van, the chips were the best I’d ever tasted and the fish was amazing plus they had huge tubs of homemade tartare sauce. Sadly they didn’t survive the return to normality, never see any of them now apart from one pizza truck and I saw them selling off the van on local FB. .

Other than that, I had the most amazing frites with mayo in Belgium recently, no fish just a huge portion of crispy frites.

Back in the early 80's visiting my Grandad in Liverpool. There was a tiny chip shop at the end of his road that did the most amazing fish & chips. I've never had anything to rival them.

Lifeboat fisheries, Scarborough

On the seafront, just opposite the cheesy yellow jokeshop.

Beautifl.fish, and the chips are double fried so they are fluffy inside crunchy outside.

Fond memories of having to take our friend outside as she was getting too excited waiting for the food to be served 😂

As sacrilegious as this sounds... the best wasn't in the UK.
Cyprus... Dhekelia beach. It was so was fresh and crispy. Every time.

Oh, it was Feb 2022 for us, so I don't know if the quality is still tbe same.
I think they use beef dripping for frying.

In Canada Victoria sat on the harbour at fishermans wharf

Cynic17 · 03/01/2025 16:21

Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

MyNavyPombear · 03/01/2025 16:22

Scotland. Big glass bottle of Irn Bru too. Delish.

DollopOfFun · 03/01/2025 16:24

Whitby. Couldn't tell you the name of the place (not the famous one), but it was a after a very long walk, we were very hungry, they were very hot and fresh. Eaten out of the paper, with one of those tiny wooden forks on the harbour front, with a ton of salt and vinegar.

happysunr1se · 03/01/2025 16:26

The Watch house in St Mawes. They'd just opened for the day and we had the first food out the kitchen. My in laws run a fish n chop shop, they were impressed too. The freshness of the oil makes a massive difference.

I'm pretty sure all chips are at least double fried.

Priory Place in Ulverston, Cumbria. I believe it was once a toilet block, but don't let that put you off!

Mymanyellow · 03/01/2025 16:30

Herne Bay on the Kent coast. Crunchy batter big fat crispy chips, loads of salt and vinegar. Piping hot too.

Vettrianofan · 03/01/2025 16:32

Anstruther. Not the famous one, the one that's not well known!

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 03/01/2025 16:33

Anstruther, Fife coast, Scotland. Best ever haddock and chips. Closely followed by a reasonablely local one which serves amazing lemon sole and chips.

CircleInASpiral · 03/01/2025 16:36

Lewis' in Seahouses, Northumberland. Such fresh fish. Heavenly. A hot July day, sat on a bench overlooking St.Aidan's bay. Pure bliss.

mewkins · 03/01/2025 16:37

West Bay in Dorset

catin8oots · 03/01/2025 16:38

Maggies on Hastings beach

Frangywangywoowah · 03/01/2025 16:40

Whitby - Magpie Cafe were pretty darn good. Beef dripping used.

X17 · 03/01/2025 16:42

The Plaice, Penzance. It was on the little island of shops by the one way system adjacent to the rail station. This was about 10 years ago, but it has gone now. Jude Law was in there getting fish and chips so it came highly recommended.

OnceMoreWithAttitude · 03/01/2025 16:43

The Middle Street Fish Bar, Deal.

Mr Chips? Just opposite the bandstand by the beach?

SereneCapybara · 03/01/2025 16:44

Our local chippy. Every time. Their big cod are over a foot long and the batter is golden and so crispy. The chips are okay but the fish is heavenly.
