Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Anything in London?😞

Yes , the Nautilus in Fortune Green. The batter is much lighter and less greasy than usual and the fish is really fresh.

Knights Fish and Chip Shop in Glastonbury

They won the National Fish and Chips Award for Fish and Chip restaurant of the Year 2024!

I go to Glastonbury for a week every year and I so look forward to my fish and chip supper. I can't eat Gluten but it was fine in the past as they sold GF fish and chips on Thursdays; I presume they changed the oil that day.
I was delighted to discover a couple of years ago that they offer a complete GF menu every day now.

It is perfect, you can have a drink 🥃 with your meal, the local cider is lethal.
The staff are great too.
My vegan and gf friend visited recently and was so happy to be able to eat there.

50 years ago I was going out with a lad from Whitby who I met at university.
I went to stay with his parents there.
I was so shocked that when we sat down for our evening meal, David was sent around to the local chippie with a bowl and brought back the chips for tea.
I was raised by a mother who double cooked chips from scratch, she even grew the potatoes! I am eternally grateful to David's mother who showed me that another way was possible!

(I am guilty of making the damn chips from scratch but I'm retired now so that's ok)

@EachandEveryone have you tried the Mayfair Chippy? Don't be put off by the slightly poncy vibe, prices and locations (Mayfair and Knightsbridge) before you've tried the food.

About 12 yrs ago we had fish and chips in The Harbourside Cafe in Whitstable, it was absolutely gorgeous. We went back a few years later and it wasn't as nice unfortunately. First time we went was in the spring at lunchtime, the second was autumn late afternoon - don't know if that had anything to do with it.

There’s a little one round the corner from Squires called south 16 and that’s good. Also Mr Chips in Bideford is good, and Sylvester’s in Appledore is probably our favourite.

Edited

Mr Chips in Bideford is nice and so is Sylvester’s, South 16 is absolutely vile!

Ref south 16, we’ve been a couple of times and it was ok for us. Not been for a year or so though. We don’t actually live in Devon, we just get down there quite a bit.

Trenchers in Whitby is fab. They've opened one up in Tynemouth, I think.

We have Bell's here in Durham which is pretty excellent, most of the time. They even have a dedicated gluten free kitchen area in ours. It's not quite as delicious as the muggle version but I'm not knocking it!

@EarthyMamma I haven't had chips made from scratch since I was a child and your post made me feel all sentimental and teary.

Me and the kids have coeliac disease. The best fish and chips we had was in a chippy in Conwy! Better than any gluten fish and chips, so crispy and light. My brother was with us and he went back and chose the GF version! We had a choice of cod, plaice, and haddock. The fishcakes were also to die for and they actually had GF vinegar and curry sauce! Massive pieces of fish.

Do you remember the name? I'm off to Rhos this week and need a good gluten free one!

Anstruther. Not the famous one, the one that's not well known!

Both the Wee Chippy or Fish and Chips on the Waterfront are better than the famous one!

Beamish fish and chips also brilliant.
