Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Cape A’ghulas southern most tip of Africa. Incredible!

stomachamelon · 03/01/2025 19:34

@RosaMoline there is one at the top... fish box which is lovely. And one right at the bottom!

@Mumofyellows that chippy in Mawgan Porth is a good one. It only opens on certain days and the owner is a characterful fellow but he makes bloody good fish and chips.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2025 19:38

There was another one in Whitby some years ago, on a back street near the cottage we were renting. SO good - the fish were the biggest I’ve ever seen.

Maggies on Hastings beach

Yes!

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 03/01/2025 19:41

Peasey Hill in Malton, Yorkshire. The shop isn’t much to look at from outside, but the food is fabulous. All fish is cooked to order, and there were long queues when I went. Was worth the wait…

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 03/01/2025 19:43

Also, the best place for fish and chips, should also give out scraps on top of the chips…heaven

Lewis' in Seahouses, Northumberland. Such fresh fish. Heavenly. A hot July day, sat on a bench overlooking St.Aidan's bay. Pure bliss.

I came on the thread to say the same!

Baggyprincess · 03/01/2025 19:54

I’m really surprised my favourite hasn’t been mentioned yet!

Enoch’s in Llandudno Junction. (Just wish it wasn’t so far away!)

PrawnofthePatriarchy · 03/01/2025 19:57

Sea Pearl in Bath. We get cod and haddock about every ten days. It's gorgeous!

LittleBobbyDazzler · 03/01/2025 20:08

So glad there is so much love for Beamish Fish and Chips. The crispy batter is just the best ever! Along with a dandelion and burdock, beautiful.

Neveranynamesleft · 03/01/2025 20:23

Lily's on Foxhall Road, Blackpool near central pier is a hidden gem.

We ate there in November 😁

Our local pub does the best fish and chips.

The Shed, Porthgain. Hands down.

LuckysDadsHat · 03/01/2025 20:30

Chez Fred in Westbourne. The best fish and chips for miles around.

TammyBundleballs · 03/01/2025 20:33

A small cafe on the edge of Torshavn harbour in The Faroe Islands had the best fish and chips I’ve ever had. They were perfect.

Daffyducklet · 03/01/2025 20:39

Mother Hubbard's in Scarborough definitely the best. Harpers in Staxton are quite good, the Magpie and Trenchers in Whitby are good, Inghams in Filey is ok, none are as good as Mother Hubbards. Has to be haddock, the batter should be crispy and not greasy. The worst fish and chips I had were in Newport Wales!

TwoBigNoisyBoys · 03/01/2025 20:44

The nicest chips are definitely from Great Yarmouth market! Never had better.

But the BEST fish and chips I ever had were when I finished chemotherapy. I’d had 6 months of chemo and after my last session, I came home feeling absolutely horrific and lay on the sofa dozing. My lovely fella came in a couple of hours later with a huge bouquet from the florist and a parcel of fish and chips. I woke up and despite feeling dreadful, sniffed the air like a bisto kid! He told me he had been going to buy me chocolates but thought I’d prefer the chippy (he knows me so well!). I was practically bald, had gained 3 stone and he kissed me and told me he loved me while I munched fish and chips.

He’s bloody wonderful 🥰

Oh gosh I've been to that Chippy.. it was excellent..
The Sea View in Saltburn.
Trenchers in Whitby.
Inghams in Filey all live up to the same expectations.

.

I came on to say Inghams in filey! My favourite annual fish and chip feast.

In Canada Victoria sat on the harbour at fishermans wharf

We had the most amazing fish and chips there as well ..I think that was the last time I had it…absolutely bloody amazing!

Any clues to get a bit closer? We're a big old country with a variety of chip shops from awesome to bleurgh! 😂

There is (or was, nearly 10 years ago now) an amazing chippie in Dufftown, in the northeast. We also had our first deep fried Mars bars there, which were surprisingly great!

FatOaf · 03/01/2025 20:46

Best ever were at Mariners in New Quay, Ceredigion. I keep having flashbacks and longing to be able to eat them again.

When I lived in Southampton, I'd occasionally join the massive queue at Charlie's on a Friday evening. Their fish & chips were very good, but not earth-shattering. Still better than pretty well any other takeaway I've tried, though.

I only allow myself one takeaway a month these days (need to lose weight and keep carbohydrate intake down), and new-year's eve's Chinese counts as January's because I'd already had one takeaway in December. So, I'll probably be on the look-out for fish & chips as soon as we get to February.

CircleInASpiral · 03/01/2025 20:47

I do recall another good one in Sandbach, Cheshire, but it was in about 2002- ish, last time I was there and can't remember the name. Just an ordinary little chippy in the back streets of the town, nothing fancy, but very nice.

my third favourite would be another tiny ordinary one in Shelton, Stoke on Trent, the corner of Queen Anne Street. I cannot recall the name, which is odd, as I lived near it but we are talking many yonks ago now. Family run and was lovely. Prices brilliant even for those days.
