Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

My husband took our son fishing one evening on the fjord whilst I was at home with our newborn. DH enjoys fishing but is notoriously bad at it. DH and DS came home with 3 of the most beautiful cods I had ever seen!
I used a Jamie Oliver recipe and made beer battered fish and chips the next day. Never done this before and it was amazing!
It was even nicer, because there are no chippy's here (lived here for over 10 yeaes) and I really missed a chippy tea. We paid nearly £10 for a bottle of Sarsons vinegar from a shop to complete the experience!
Now I make it about 3 times a year, but usually have to buy the fish.

Oliver’s in Redcar, Hadley’s in Whitby (much better than the Magpie) or Kailis’ in Fremantle (but that one was a very long time ago now!).

Hard to beat our local chippy in our W Midlands city but, on a coach trip to Scotland in 1992 we visited a place called Callander, where some of the original Dr. Finlay's Casebook was filmed in the 1960's, we bought a 'fish supper' at lunchtime and sat in a nearby park to eat it.
It was so good that we still rave about it over 30 years later.

Bellamy's, Great Ecclestone near Preston. Had Haddock, Hake and Cod available. Love hake so we had that. Tiny village with a big queue for that chip shop and I know why

Anstruther. Not the famous one, the one that's not well known!

The one at the other end of the harbour road from the 'famous' one? We've always found it much better than the famous one 😁

Scotland. Big glass bottle of Irn Bru too. Delish.

Any clues to get a bit closer? We're a big old country with a variety of chip shops from awesome to bleurgh! 😂

The rockfish takeaway at Dartmouth eaten on Bayards cove.

Can’t remember the name but it was in Helensburgh, north of Glasgow. Long time ago now!

Beamish museum - beef dripping, coal fired deliciousness!

Priory Place in Ulverston, Cumbria. I believe it was once a toilet block, but don't let that put you off!

It’s the sister chippy to Packet Bridge in Hest Bank.

Their fish and chips are sooo good!!

Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

Same for me. Brilliant chippy.

Mumofyellows · 03/01/2025 17:02

On the beach at Mawgan Porth in Cornwall, after a day in Padstow watching the hoards trudging to Rick Steins and sitting on the kerbside eating we decided it wasn't for us so drove back and had F&C with a can of Rattler each, sharing our leftovers with the dogs, watching the sun set! Was amazing!

Best chips will always belong to Brewers on Yarmouth market. With blue cheese mayo.

I've lived in Whitby my whole life..... agree with the PP that said Beamish

Oh gosh I've been to that Chippy.. it was excellent..
The Sea View in Saltburn.
Trenchers in Whitby.
Inghams in Filey all live up to the same expectations.

CountryShepherd · 03/01/2025 17:08

Fish'n'Fritz in Weymouth - excellent!

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 03/01/2025 17:10

The chippies seem universally ace in Whitby - we've had great food from The Magpie, Quayside and Trenchers.

In Manchester Chips at Number 8 is one for the beef dripping fans.

GroovyChick87 · 03/01/2025 17:10

It was in Blackpool, a small chippy with tables and chairs outside near to our B and B. The fish was huge and cooked to perfection. I'll find out the name of the place and update. Some of our locals do nice fish but that one topped them all.

Mr Chips? Just opposite the bandstand by the beach?

Honestly don't remember, sorry. Could have been!

TribulationPeriwinkle · 03/01/2025 17:15

Another vote for Aldeburgh.
