Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Eagerly hoping for a Northants/Bucks recommendation as we haven’t found a decent one in this area yet! 🙏🏽

Gilead · 03/01/2025 18:17

Another one for Aldeburgh!

Justonedayatatime11 · 03/01/2025 18:18

No1 in Cromer. The sheer joy of gluten free fish and chips that tastes as good as the normal stuff is worth the ludicrous prices!

I would share but I don’t want it to get descended upon because I’m selfish!

bestbefore · 03/01/2025 18:20

At Aldeburgh! I'd drive there now if I could..

Whitby - Magpie Cafe were pretty darn good. Beef dripping used.

There are loads of chippies near the Magpie but it’s the only one with a permanent queue. That tells you all you need to know!

As sacrilegious as this sounds... the best wasn't in the UK.
Cyprus... Dhekelia beach. It was so was fresh and crispy. Every time.

Yep, also not UK.
In Spain I had a flat fish I don't know the word for (no, I am not Hilaria Baldwin) which had been dusted in seasoned flour and friend in olive oil with sea salt sprinkled on top served with disks of fried potatoes with garlic and fresh tomatoes.
In The UK I had some really nice ones in Conwy but I think that all fish and chips taste better out of paper while sitting on a harbour fighting off seagulls

I've been to that chippy, they are awesome. There is a chip shop in the middle of Hebden Bridge that does the most amazing chips, we have debated more than once driving in that direction just to get some (it's over an hour away 😀)

Aldeburgh in Suffolk.

Second that!!

So tempted to make a Google Map with all of these 😂😋 Would have to work my way through them all though - you know, for quality control!

I'm not a fish eater, but the chips from Naked Fish & Chips in Rickmansworth are incredible and there's always a queue out the door so I'm guessing the fish are alright too.

Genuinely googled how far from Aldeburgh we are! 😂 (Closest one to us from all that have been mentioned)

So pleased to see the Harbour Fish Bar being mentioned, not a figment of our hungry imaginations then 😆
Yes yes to the poster who said best eaten fresh, in the car (only time, I don't eat in my car!!!)
We were laughing as the fish was larger than our laps!
It was February, it was cold, we were hungry BUT it honestly was the best ever!

My local place is up there. It is a formal fish restaurant that does takeaway fish and chips so definitely a cut above standard takeaways. The price however does reflect this Confused

Mea culpa also. Years ago in Brittany, little restaurant run by two young guys. Kids were being “we don’t like French food(they bloody did)” and we had plaice goujons in the lightest crispy batter and piping hot and crisp French fries. They also made the most beautiful vanilla ice cream we’ve ever had.

Newport in Wales. Fab fish and chips by the harbour. Think it was called the lime something or other. I had fresh sole. Was amazing.

Do you mean The Lime Crab in Newquay @Pippatpip ?

They have the best PR and tourists and southern journos are lazy, that's all.

Yorkshire fish and chips are generally excellent and nicer than anywhere else so when a non Yorkshire person has them they think they're the best but to those of us who live here, they're really nothing special.

RosaMoline · 03/01/2025 18:40

London suburbs here. Nothing amazing around here, but I am going to Robin Hood Bay next month - any recommendations? I’ve noted down the one that was mentioned in Whitby as that’s a place were probably going to visit.

The one at the other end of the harbour road from the 'famous' one? We've always found it much better than the famous one 😁

The famous one was brilliant the one time we went.

Also, another vote for the Magpie in Whitby - best fish cake I’ve ever had.

marginallyawake · 03/01/2025 18:40

Trenchers in Whitby. I also have happy memories of Belgian frites from a long-ago trip to Bruge.

Autofilia · 03/01/2025 18:42

Chippy dre in Tremadog
Had amazing f&c in Lynmouth but can't remember where

AConcernedCitizen · 03/01/2025 18:44

Bennett's Fish and Chips in Weymouth. Fish that melted like butter and portions like I've never seen before.

endsnewyearsday · 03/01/2025 18:50

My best ever tasting fish n chips might not be the best I've ever had, but due to the fact we had just arrived back in the country after a massive train trek from Spain and were famished, definitely the most memorable.
There was a chippy over the road from the station, and we got them straight away and devoured them outside on the station steps.

PickaStar · 03/01/2025 18:51

@TickingAlongNicely ...nothing sacrilegious about that, there's a great many good fish and chip shops run by Cypriots in this country.

Zone4flaneur · 03/01/2025 18:52

Trenchers in Whitby is good. I'm from cornwall and DH is from east Yorkshire and absolutely nowhere in Cornwall is as good as Yorkshire. I've got a soft spot for the one in Hornsea as well, and there's a good place in Hull City Centre. Lifeboat in Scarbs also good.

Pasties in Cornwall, Fish and Chips in Yorkshire. Nearer to London the chippy in Leigh on Sea is pretty good.

DollopOfFun · 03/01/2025 16:24

Whitby. Couldn't tell you the name of the place (not the famous one), but it was a after a very long walk, we were very hungry, they were very hot and fresh. Eaten out of the paper, with one of those tiny wooden forks on the harbour front, with a ton of salt and vinegar.

Hadley's is very nice and people speak well of Trencher's. I'm thinking about going there for my birthday during the summer as I've heard so many good things about it.

Zone4flaneur · 03/01/2025 18:53

(Incidentally if you're going to have fish and chips in cornwall weirdly they are loads better away from the sea up in the China Clay villages. No idea why).

I honestly think the scenario in which you eat your F+C entirely dictates how enjoyable they are.

Ideal for me is a miserable day, stopping for chips on the way home and eating them in the car. It's the only time I'll ever happily eat in the car as any other time I'll just wait until I get home.

But the best I've had are from my old local where I used to live.

I agree with this totally. It is a factor, but not the only one. Good cooks do make a difference.

I once had no food and only water for five days, from 4pm on a Sunday afternoon (June) until 4pm on the following Friday. This was a deliberate diet. It is an incredible journey with Wednesday being euphoric (other people such as journalists who did the trial said the same, but my goodness Tuesday late morning is a real low - think of quitting). To break myself in gently, I had an apple and some Ryvita with butter. The taste explosions were off the chart. For the following 24 hours everything I ate tasted like it had been served up in The Savoy.
