Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

The cafe at Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland, does fish-cakes made with Craster kippers. They are absolutely delicious and come with big, fat chips😋

Anstruther. Not the famous one, the one that's not well known!

The Wee Chippy ?

GameOfJones · 03/01/2025 18:57

The Black Country Living Museum.

Fried in beef dripping, wrapped in newspaper and I still dream about them. I imagine the posters saying Beamish have experienced similar!

I've been to The Magpie in Whitby and it was nothing compared to the ones at the Black Country museum.

Leeman Fish and Chips, Western Australia. There’s only one. DH and I shared locally caught emperor fish and shark battered with chips. Properly wrapped in paper too. It was 44 degrees at the time and the best fish and chips I have ever eaten.

No17CherryTreeLane · 03/01/2025 19:03

About to eat my mediocre f + c now 😭

Mario's Fish Bar on the outskirts of Bristol, often lauded as the best chippy in Bristol. Also happens to be my local chippy.

Chipbarmandgravy · 03/01/2025 19:05

@No17CherryTreeLane

Thanks staring an amazing thread x

Cant decide which is best. Seaside chips on the beach. Lard fried chips in Yorkshire. Large fish supper in Glasgow which was 2x delicious fish. Our local Lancashire chippy does homemade school style cheese and onion pie. There was one in benalmadena that covered all British regional variations.

It’s got to be a Chip barn and gravy from the chippy on Salford precinct sat outside on plastic tables people watching 👀

My own.
Best Cod Loin from Waitrose fish counter. Their "Frozen Crisp and Fluffy Chips", but fry them. Batchelors mushy peas heated with a bit of butter topped with Colemans Mint Sauce.
Stir some malt vinegar into the fish batter so it doesn't lose its crispness.

Unfortunately, I no longer eat fish and I miss it.

Having traveled around Devon and Cornwall in our van, we’ve had plenty of Fish & chips.
To be honest we’ve yet to find one that stood out as exceptional!
Theres a place called Squires in North Devon and for years it’s won major awards, yet we thought it was horrible and we’d never return, we’ve yet to find a decent one in Cornwall.
South Devon , Paignton has a place called Scoffs which does chips in a specific type of batter and they were ok.

Best ever we’ve had was a few years ago in Reykjavík, fresh cod straight from the sea, amazing, also most expensive we’ve ever had!

SingingSands · 03/01/2025 19:10

Our best was in Swanage, sitting outside at the Stone Quay, about 15 years ago. One of those golden summer evenings after a glorious day, and the chippy tea topped it off. No idea what the restaurant was called!

rightoguvnor · 03/01/2025 19:12

I'm not a fish person, more of a saveloy girl, but my gosh the chip shop on the high street in Headcorn, Kent, does the most amazing fish in batter that is so light and crispy. That's the only place I ever order fish and chips.
And there's a pensioner special too.

Blankspace35 · 03/01/2025 19:15

Daveys at Beamish museum. Its cooked in dripping on coal fires, well worth the queue

Bananalanacake · 03/01/2025 19:17

Aldeburgh, Suffolk. We would eat them in the car on the road next to the sea looking at the Martello Tower. I'm pretty sure there used to be a public toilet block on the side of the road next to the river Alde but it went years ago, if anyone else remembers it.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 03/01/2025 19:20

@harridan50 from Red Fish Blue Fish?

Cornflakes123 · 03/01/2025 19:21

Fish and chips vagninn in Reykjavik in Iceland . The nicest fish I have ever tasted, so fresh and flaky.

BlackChunkyBoots · 03/01/2025 19:21

A chippy overlooking Brixham harbour. Never beaten.

icelolly12 · 03/01/2025 19:22

Trenchers in Whitby is lovely and a favourite with locals.

rainxe · 03/01/2025 19:23

A little shack in Queenstown by the lake in New Zealand. Was delicious and I think the fish was hoki.

Secondly Mr Pinks which is my local.

artfuldodgerjack · 03/01/2025 19:25

Mr Chips in Whitby.
Pretty much most of the chippies in Yorkshire are excellent. Especially the ones that use beef dripping!

There’s a little one round the corner from Squires called south 16 and that’s good. Also Mr Chips in Bideford is good, and Sylvester’s in Appledore is probably our favourite.

CatsLikeBoxes · 03/01/2025 19:29

Best chips Ive had were from the little cafe on west beach Littlehampton. I'd go there just for them!

mumofbun · 03/01/2025 19:30

Came on to say very luckily our local - Anstruther we alternate between the two non famous ones!

MajorCarolDanvers · 03/01/2025 19:30

For Cornwall try Greg & Lou's, Redruth or Cousin Jack's, Illogan. They're the best I've found so far.
