Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Can't comment on fish as I don't eat it but the best chips in the world are Leo Burdocks near Christ Church in Dublin !!

Whatevernext1 · 03/01/2025 17:27

Another vote for Aldeburgh!
Making me hungry!

It was in Blackpool, a small chippy with tables and chairs outside near to our B and B. The fish was huge and cooked to perfection. I'll find out the name of the place and update. Some of our locals do nice fish but that one topped them all.

Bentleys?

Beamish museum - beef dripping, coal fired deliciousness!

Coming here to say this !

DungareesAndTrombones · 03/01/2025 17:32

Harpers at Staxton near Filey. Divine!

mcmooberry · 03/01/2025 17:33

2 best, one in New Zealand by the sea maybe 20 years ago and the second in a hotel in Northumberland (now closed unfortunately). My DH didn't order it as they wouldn't substitute mushy for normal peas and has regretted it ever since after trying a very small amount of mine (around 13 years ago it was)

Thestablelights · 03/01/2025 17:34

Fish in Marchmont in Edinburgh. They do amazing smoked haddock and even their normal haddock and chips is amazing. I'm sad that DD is finished uni now because we have no excuse to visit!

Bjorkdidit · 03/01/2025 17:34

It has to be haddock and fried in beef dripping, that's the secret. I won't have anything else.

ImWearingPantaloons · 03/01/2025 17:43

Possibly not the most convenient, but a fish and chip shop on the Mornington Peninsular in Australia.

Over 20 years ago and I still think about it. You ordered your fish and then it was cooked to order for you.

SnowyIcySnow · 03/01/2025 17:45

Oliver's, Redcar. (Followed by a lemon top).

But pretty much anywhere on the NE coast of England, that still fries in dripping. Saltburn has some nice places too.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 03/01/2025 17:47

I don't eat fish but substituting sausage in batter but the fish eating family would agree. The Pilot, Dungeness. Outside on a very blowy covid day. So good. Steak pie was also amazing the next day. No I don't work for them!

Pippatpip · 03/01/2025 17:48

Newport in Wales. Fab fish and chips by the harbour. Think it was called the lime something or other. I had fresh sole. Was amazing.

CatsLikeBoxes · 03/01/2025 17:55

I don't eat fish, but the battered halloumi from a chippy in Epsom is delicious - the batter is so light and crispy

LotusPanties · 03/01/2025 17:56

Indian style fish and chips I've had in a restaurant

ThejoyofNC · 03/01/2025 18:00

I honestly think the scenario in which you eat your F+C entirely dictates how enjoyable they are.

Ideal for me is a miserable day, stopping for chips on the way home and eating them in the car. It's the only time I'll ever happily eat in the car as any other time I'll just wait until I get home.

But the best I've had are from my old local where I used to live.

Harbour Fish bar is our favourite , has to be haddock and notable mention for their beanies - buy a few for the freezer when we go. I basically spent my teenage years sat in the window nook in there as we all had a crush on the owner’s son who looked a bit like a young Elvis plus it was warm in there

Gormans in North Seaton is up there too

Bentleys?

Yes !!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 03/01/2025 18:04

So tempted to make a Google Map with all of these 😂😋 Would have to work my way through them all though - you know, for quality control!

I'm not a fish eater, but the chips from Naked Fish & Chips in Rickmansworth are incredible and there's always a queue out the door so I'm guessing the fish are alright too.

Oh yes, there was one of those in Huddersfield that did a mixed box of fish pieces in spiced batter, samosa, bhaji and chips with Indian pickles and sauces. Was amazing but sadly they closed down.

Teachymummy · 03/01/2025 18:07

Chip shop right next to the beach on Anglesey. We were swimming and body boarding and it was absolutely freezing. DH went down to the chippy, barefeet and wetsuits totally acceptable in there and got us fish and chips which we ate on the beach as we got out the sea. The battery was crispy the fish was so fresh it fell apart and I think because we were so cold it tasted all the better!

stomachamelon · 03/01/2025 18:10

All the shouts for Whitby and Saltburn we got to Staithes 3/4 times a year and the chippy at the top of the bank is amazing. We are from down south and it beats ours hands down. Makes me hungry thinking about it :)

Tracystubbs · 03/01/2025 18:11

Harpers in york (it may have closed by now-this was years ago)

It's down (or was) the road to my parents housr and they where the tits-fresh,light,hot and crispy

We stopped at one in whitby (it was a restaurant on the front-not the magpie) and it was lovely

We did get some from doxy fish bar in stafford-1st time was gorgeous, went back with my ds and it was rank so never bothered again!

fairydust11 · 03/01/2025 18:13

Rick Steins chip shop in Newquay.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/01/2025 18:13

Overall, sea frontfish and chips are the best.
Much like donuts. What is it about donuts that makes them taste SO much better at the seaside ?

Other than that there was a chip shop in Stoney Middleton years back that did amazing fish and chips. No idea if they're still open. They were in an old toll house I think.

muddyford · 03/01/2025 18:14

Yorkshire fish and chips are the best by far.
Otherwise, French's in north Norfolk and the Norfolk Riddle in Walsingham (latter now closed).
