Best fish and chips you've ever had

We are having fish and chips tonight.
It will be "OK", decent but nothing exceptional.
We still talk about the best f + c with reverence.
We stopped off on our drive back down south from Northumberland for lunch, googled the nearest chippy and found ourselves at Harbour Fish Bar in Amble.
It was heavenly.
I've never heard or tasted crunchier batter.
If you're a local, you're bloody lucky!

Tell me about your best chippy experience! 😁

Anstruther in Fife . There is 2 fab chippy there but I think the wee chippy is slightly better

Norries in Oban is to die for, we go a few times a year. Would recommend a large single fish you won't be disappointed it's like moby dick!!!

Gay Lane Fisheries in Otley does the best quality and value F&C I've had in years. I think the owners are Polish but I'm not sure. Two of the kindest and politest people I've ever met. I'm looking forward to my next visit (I'm not sure they're open tonight).

I came on this thread to suggest Gay Lane Fisheries, only to find I wasn't alone!

Also, the Fishmarket in Newhaven in Edinburgh is pretty good.

Bells on Durham, they have both a takeaway and a sit down restaurant. Gorgeous, just in the market place.

The one at the other end of the harbour road from the 'famous' one? We've always found it much better than the famous one 😁

The Wee Chippy, think that's where all the locals go. Always enjoyed fish suppers out of there.

Yes, apparently locals use The Wee Chippy instead of Anstruther Fish Bar.

The grand pier at Weston super mare

Toottooot · 03/01/2025 22:32

Mikes Chipper or back in the day Bluebird Chipper. Can’t beat a good chipper supper.

NotSoRosyOnTheHill · 03/01/2025 22:32

Oh that’s an easy one. Anstruther. No contest.

AllRightNowt · 03/01/2025 22:35

Finney's Benllech on Anglesey. Gluten free too.

The Magpie, Whitby
The Wee Hurrie, Troon
Lobster Shack, North Berwick - great fish and chips but outstanding lobster and chips!

Plaice and chips from Hobbs’ and sons at The Black Country Museum, Dudley. I often fantasise about it. Going to Birmingham for a gig in summer, wondering if I can get a return trip shoehorned in.

Best fish and chips I’ve had have always been in the Black Country and it’s because in a lot of places they fry them in dripping instead of oil.

I’m really surprised my favourite hasn’t been mentioned yet!

Enoch’s in Llandudno Junction. (Just wish it wasn’t so far away!)

Nah , Enochs in Valley

Oban pier west of Scotland, Wee Green Hut I think the name is. Fresh battered haddock, seared scallops, langoustine & chips fresh lemon. Eaten on the pier at their outside tables. Food of the Gods. 3 other award winning chippies in Oban!

OurDreamLife · 03/01/2025 22:46

I’ve been to Beamish so many times and never tried their fish and chips. It’s definitely on the list for next time as I keep seeing tiktoks of the food.

SauvignonBlonk · 03/01/2025 22:56

The last fish and chips we had were from Mr Chips in Bideford - they were really good. The counter staff were a harmonious chip wrapping machine during an exceedingly busy time….silence in the shop with them all sorting all the orders, it was a sight to behold!
For reliability - Aldeburgh: I’ve eaten fish and chips there many times and never ever been disappointed. Amazing fish and chips.

EachandEveryone · 03/01/2025 22:56

Anything in London?😞

Stygimoloch · 03/01/2025 23:01

The Black Country Chippy in Great Bridge in the West Midlands, 15 years ago while heavily pregnant with my daughter. My husband and I used to go there on the way back from our Monday night NHS antenatal classes. Proper orange chips. I'd dream about them all week. Delicious. Nothing has ever tasted so good since.

Longsand's in Tynemouth,

HippyChickMama · 03/01/2025 23:24

Porthleven Fish and Chips in, surprisingly enough, Porthleven in Cornwall or Papas on the pier at Cleethorpes

Longsand's in Tynemouth,

The cafe near the priory does the best curry sauce.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/01/2025 23:54

Cobo chippy in Guernsey and the one in Budleigh Salterron - both delicious and you eat them sat on the sea wall.

Trenchers in Whitby.

One on Kangaroo Island in Australia where the fish is whatever gets caught that day and you can hear the penguins calling when you eat them.

Elferbowton · 04/01/2025 00:01

A few shouts for ones in Blackpool and obviously there's loads but as any local will tell you, and I lived there a few years ago, the best by far is Yorkshire Fisheries on Topping Street near the train station.
Outstanding and so popular it closes at 7pm so if you get chance go early.

StormingNorman · 04/01/2025 00:03

I have misophonia and just reading the words “crunchy batter” has turned my stomach.

GiddyRobin · 04/01/2025 00:13

Me and the kids have coeliac disease. The best fish and chips we had was in a chippy in Conwy! Better than any gluten fish and chips, so crispy and light. My brother was with us and he went back and chose the GF version! We had a choice of cod, plaice, and haddock. The fishcakes were also to die for and they actually had GF vinegar and curry sauce! Massive pieces of fish.
