DCs want ours up now!!!!!
Answer is no! But I will probably cave and let them put it up on 30th November! 🌲 but I'll know I'll want it down by Boxing Day!

First weekend in Dec

WhatNoRaisins · 03/11/2024 15:32

We tend to do the first weekend of Advent and take it down the day before they go back to school. Don't get why you'd take down the decorations when it's still December personally.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 03/11/2024 15:32

Partway through December. Usually around the 10th or 12th.

Either the weekend 30Nov/1Dec or the 7/8th, depending on adult dd's availability and whether I'm singing in a carol concert or not. She loves to come back home and help me with the tree, although so far she hasn't invited me round to assist with hers!

Love these threads, waiting for the competitive Christmas decorating disdain 🤣🤣 “I put mine up on the 25th a 6am, take it down then just before the Christmas dinner” 🤣🤣

I think it is well established on MN there are two schools of thought:

  • tree up early December (or earlier), up for whole of advent but down after the main day
  • tree up closer to Christmas but keep it up until traditional 12th night.
Personally I (and I don't think my DC either) can't cope with term time & Christmas decorations combined so we do the latter.
Jeremono · 03/11/2024 15:34

Next weekend 😊 It comes down in the second weekend of January. I love Christmas!

suburburban · 03/11/2024 15:34

Definitely around 14/15th, don't understand why anyone would bother in November

GrumpyPanda · 03/11/2024 15:36

Dec 23 at the earliest, usually the 24th. Comes down after Epiphany. Only way to make UT work with live candles and not burn down the house 🤣

If the dcs are being a nuisance, can you promise them an advent wreath or is that totally not a UK thing? Although it still wouldn't solve the immediate problem..

FennelFan · 03/11/2024 15:37

Around 10 days before Christmas. We get a real tree so it'll be a bit droopy if it's too early. Will put other decorations up the week before that probably.

First weekend of December. Like 6th or 7th of December. 🎄

mondaytosunday · 03/11/2024 15:39

Normally first weekend in December. But my youngest is at uni so won't be home, so my eldest said he'd come up to help but wants it to coincide with a footie match he can go to so it looks like tree will be going up sometime the first week.
I don't really need the help to be honest but I've always had the kids with me to 'help' me decide.

NorthantsNewbie · 03/11/2024 15:40

A few people I follow online have their fake ones up now but only with lights on until December, which is quite a nice compromise.

First weekend in December here. Real tree, saw a bit off the bottom and pop straight into a water container, and it’s fine until twelfth night.

Queenofkindle · 03/11/2024 15:42

1st December down around 5/6th January

isodontknow · 03/11/2024 15:43

First weekend of advent until the 5th or 6th January.

HaleyBrookeandPeyton · 03/11/2024 15:44

22nd November and it will be taken down around 28th December as I like to all gone before new year. DH actually wants it up earlier then this, but Ive said no (which is unusual as I love everything about christmas and he's normally a scrooge!)

BCBird · 03/11/2024 15:45

Not bothering
Just me general and going away a couple of days after.

keeliine · 03/11/2024 15:46

First weekend in December, then we put it away the first weekend in January. We have a fake tree and store it on the top floor, so we like to get a decent few weeks out of it after dragging it down 4 flights of stairs.

ForPearlViper · 03/11/2024 15:47

I like the tree and decorations to be up for at least four weeks for three reasons. Firstly, it takes so long to get that sucker sorted out that I want it up for that length of time to make it all worthwhile. Secondly, I am also responsible for the decorations at an elderly relative's house and like to spread the effort out. Thirdly, in the dark days of December, I love fairly lights - the more the merrier.

RosieFlamingo · 03/11/2024 15:47

1st Dec until 1st Jan every year.

frozendaisy · 03/11/2024 15:47

We get a real tree, so kids understand it has a needle holding life of 3 weeks maximum.

Usually weekend between 14th-20th more towards 20th.

As they have got older they ask for the full 12 days up, which I calculate as 5th January.

That's plenty.

godmum56 · 03/11/2024 15:48

mid ish december but I don't start with the christmas tree

WeAllHaveWings · 03/11/2024 15:50

Mid December, looking at calendar probably Friday 20th.

I'm similar, it wouldn't feel worth all that effort to only have it for 12 days. I can see why that made more sense in my grandparents day when it was just a 3 foot tree with 20 lights and a few ornaments.

Nicebloomers · 03/11/2024 15:51

Probably 7th Dec. Down in the early new year. Depends how it looks.

Natsku · 03/11/2024 15:55

Usually the weekend before Christmas, depends when we get a tree though as last year I think we didn't buy a tree until the 23rd!
Stays up until Epiphany though.
