Without looking it up, do you know what Bubble and squeak is?

Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

I turn leftover Dutch stamppot into bubble and squeak. I deliberately always make too much.
The trick is to keep letting it catch before you stir it so that you get wonderful crispy, caramelised bits throughout. Then a fried egg on top.
Heaven.

Left over roast potatoes
I've read about leftover roast potatoes but I've never actually met any
OP on a glass-half-full day I could maybe forgive the woeful ingredients but Wasn't even fried is an abominationAngry

Skigal86 · 24/08/2024 12:31

Leftovers from a roast bound together with mash and fried, although when I make it from scratch I put mash, bacon, brocolli, onion, carrot and sweetcorn in, sometimes with a bit of cheese to help it bind.

just read your update - I have been known to eat it before it’s fried 🤦🏼‍♀️

GymClassHeroes · 24/08/2024 12:33

Yes! My dad used to make it for us with left overs. Abit of brown sauce on the side.
It is delicious.

ArabellaFishwife · 24/08/2024 12:35

I've never understood how bubble and squeak can be made with leftovers. I make it to be eaten the same day, and for four/five greedy people it takes two fair-sized pans of potatoes and green veg, left to cool before frying then baking for extra crispiness.
You should have called the police, OP, because what you describe is a crime and an obscenity.

ratherbesurfing · 24/08/2024 12:36

Cabbage and potato? That’s not bubble and squeak.

Bubble and squeak is a mix of veg and potato (but must include sprouts), fried till it’s really crispy,

Cabbage and potato is colcannon isn’t it?

Threesacrow · 24/08/2024 12:36

It's the left over cooked veggies from Sunday lunch, fried up in butter and oil to make crunchy edged patties, crispy and gorgeous. Served with cold sliced meat from Sunday lunch, leaving time for laundry day on Monday.

Cural · 24/08/2024 12:37

I'm pleased to see that most posters don't put onion in.

Onion turns it into something else.......something oniony.

the80sweregreat · 24/08/2024 12:37

Cabbage and potatoes fried up

Mansionscoldandgrey · 24/08/2024 12:38

Am I the only one who throws in leftover gravy before mashing and frying?

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 24/08/2024 12:39

I'm thinking of going out and getting the ingredients for a roast tomorrow now just so I can have bubble on Monday 🤦‍♂️

I'm sorry for the travesty they served you and the deep disappointment and feelings of loss you must've experienced

ShowOfHands · 24/08/2024 12:40

You have to plan leftover roast potatoes.

On Christmas Day, we cook double quantities of potatoes and veg so that we can have b&s on boxing day and my parents and brother can take some home to make their own b&s.

(We cook double quantities of everything tbh and then between Christmas and New Year, we live on leftovers, transforming them into pies, curries and salads)

Pascha · 24/08/2024 12:40

I like onion in it personally.

Grammarnut · 24/08/2024 12:40

Cabbage and potato left-overs, fried together and seasoned. You can add egg if you wish.

AIstolemylunch · 24/08/2024 12:42

I put all the boxind day veggie leftovers in so mine also has carrots, swede, bussel sprouts, califlower cheese. Delish with brown sauce on Boxing Day!

I actively stop people having leftovers on Christmas Day eveing so thers enough veg and potatoes left for B&S 😀

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 24/08/2024 12:42

To be honest, I've looked it up a number of times in the last 20-odd years, and I still don't know what it is 😂 are there potatoes involved?

goes off to google it yet again

Cabbage and potato is colcannon isn’t it?

Traditionally, bubble and squeak is cabbage and potato but you can put in any veg you have leftover.

Colcannon is similar afaik, but you don't fry it and serve as a patty.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 24/08/2024 12:38

Am I the only one who throws in leftover gravy before mashing and frying?

Definitely not. I put some aside before dishing up (along with some roasties!) so I know there will be enough 😁

AutumnFroglets · 24/08/2024 12:46

It wasn't even fried??! 😱

I would have been sad too OP.

Saracen · 24/08/2024 12:46

Fried cabbage and something, I think. Potatoes? Onions?

saveforthat · 24/08/2024 12:49

Kurokurosuke · 24/08/2024 11:23

Did you end up with a couple of guinea pigs?

I had guinea pigs named Bubble and Squeak when I was a kid.

Saracen · 24/08/2024 12:49

WASN'T FRIED?? Not bubble and squeak. Even I know that. How disappointing!

Storynanny1 · 24/08/2024 12:50

Yes to the poster who linked Monday bubble and squeak to Monday laundry day!I have vivid memories on my flustered mother with the single tub and mangle dragged into the middle of the kitchen cursing if it was raining and then sort of apologising to my dad at 5.30 pm when it was “ only bubble and squeak and cold meat for dinner”
How times have changed! Little did she know we all preferred it to the roast the day before!

invisiblecat · 24/08/2024 12:53

Oh my, that is a tragic attempt.

PerkyMintDeer · 24/08/2024 12:55

With the exception of "Pepsi" and "Cola", it's suddenly occurred to me that I've never met a pair of guinea pigs not called Bubble and Squeak.

Bubble and Squeak, the quintessentially British way of using up leftover vegetables,

Or naming pairs of guinea pigs.
