Without looking it up, do you know what Bubble and squeak is?

Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

Did not RTFT.
Am not British born.
I think it's sausages & mashed potatoes with gravy.

(google... ahhhh... I had one ingredient right).

Who eats cabbage nowadays? It's hardly a true staple now.

Cabbage, ideally Savoy cabbage or hispi cabbage is terribly fashionable - ideally oven roasted with miso. I've been seeing it all over in restaurants for a few years. I grant you that the sort of meal that's has a trendy cabbage side dish and the sort of meal that turns into bubble and squeak are rather different.

Mashed potato
Frozen peas and carrot mix 😕

No cabbage or any green veg, no crispy bacon bits, no onion. Wasn't even fried. No salty, crispy edges, no crust. No flavour.

Just toddler style. Mixed up mash and veg.

I was so sad.

that's terrible OP
I'd get on to trading standards at the town hall

Mmmmm bubble n squeak. Potatoes, cabbage/sprouts, bonus bacon.

This is what I thought too. I can remember my Mum saying she had cooked a few sprouts for bubble and squeak the next morning.

I swapped it for a sausage sandwich.

I don't blame you.

rentersleaf · 24/08/2024 20:01

It's basically left over roast dinner veg with some bacon fried

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 24/08/2024 20:08

In our house it was always the leftovers from Sunday roast, so roast potatoes and veg. Chopped up together and then fried until crispy. Served either as part of a full English for breakfast, or with sausages and Branston pickle for dinner.

AliceMcK · 24/08/2024 21:52

I was under the impression B&S was what ever was left over, meat or no meat. Traditionally I thought the main ingredients tended to be potatoes and cabbage but it could be anything. My DF would keep all the leftovers off our plates and fry it all up, I don’t remember him adding anything else, if there wasn’t enough he’d slap it between some bread and eat it. I’m guessing there wasn’t any meat as he’d eat that all up before scrapping the left overs 😝 Unless he had a gammon on the go previously then he may have added the drag ends to it.

The main rule was that nothing was wasted, I thought that was what B&S was about, making use of left overs.

Adding things like eggs and beans 🤮

Was the restaurant version made with garlic and olive oil mash, or some such aberration?

I sometimes cook extra mash and cabbage on purpose, to have the next day.

It wouldn’t surprise me. According to one top chef this as a vegetable pie. A tiny one judging by the size of the sliced radish on top.

No. It was a caff™️ of the caffiest kind. Tea served with bag in a mug sort of place.

Most places like that do better.

LBOCS2 · 25/08/2024 14:21

Our local caff does an excellent bubble and squeak, it makes me very happy.

Bubble and squeak is what makes peeling potatoes for Christmas dinner worth it. It's my favourite part of the festive period - served with a couple of decent slices of home cooked ham and a fried egg on top.

MummyMags3 · 25/08/2024 17:50

Yes! We like it. My mum and nanna both used to make it.

I wouldn't know, obviously reading the responses I now do and I must say fried potatoes, sprouts cabbage sounds gross!
We always have pancakes or bagels for Boxing Day breakfast

You have never tasted the wonder that is bubble and squeak. Beats bagels and pancakes for breakfast any day of the week.

CWigtownshire · 25/08/2024 18:32

Leftover sprouts/cabbage and mash mixed together and fried in lots of butter or oil. Yum.

Londontown12 · 25/08/2024 18:46

Left over spuds Brussels mashed together and fried ! Yum yummy 🤤 x

Nanalisa60 · 25/08/2024 18:57

Best thing about Boxing Day Bubble and squeak , left over roast potatoes smashed up bit of fried onions in a big frying pan add left over Brussel sprouts , fry chopped onion add roast potato's smush them up with potato masher and left over sprouts until golden brown, just the best with cold ham and turkey with some pickles.

Bernardo1 · 25/08/2024 18:57

Yes

pollymere · 25/08/2024 19:19

Cabbage, potato, possibly a bit of leek or bacon.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 25/08/2024 19:24

RavenhairedRachel · 25/08/2024 20:08

Yes .It must be a generational thing.

MadMadaMim · 25/08/2024 20:10

In our house and every home from where I'm from bubble and squeak is whatever is left over from Sunday roast chopped up quite small and then fried on a frying pan - it MUST have crispy, almost burnt bits.with a nice dollop of brown sauce

It's one of the joys of boxing day!

TheDandyLion · 24/08/2024 11:13

Boxing day is not boxing day without bubble and squeak.

Obsolutely. Always had this at home and have continued the tradition ever since! My grown up children always insist on it too.
