Without looking it up, do you know what Bubble and squeak is?

Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

Mashed potato
Frozen peas and carrot mix 😕

No cabbage or any green veg, no crispy bacon bits, no onion. Wasn't even fried. No salty, crispy edges, no crust. No flavour.

Just toddler style. Mixed up mash and veg.

I was so sad.

Shock That is dreadful. I definitely wouldn't have expected that if someone advertised bubble and squeak. I'd have been so disappointed.

Boxing day is not boxing day without bubble and squeak.

THIS x a million, the best meal of Christmas. All the veggie leftovers, plus stuffing and pigs in blankets, chopped up, fried, and served with sliced turkey, gammon, and Asti.

I knew it would be peas!

BOAK.

I'm so sorry OP, you deserved better. That's a travesty.

Oh dear. Commiserations. Looking at responses on here as to the actual composition of B&S it sounds like you should sue under the trade descriptions act. (IANAL)

Kitkat1523 · 24/08/2024 11:57

yes….had it loads as a kid

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 24/08/2024 11:58

Did you point out that plain mash and veg is not bubble and squeak? So weird it wasn't even fried...did they forget? Maybe it being a bank holiday weekend they didn't have decent staff in.

BoobyDazzler · 24/08/2024 11:58

Yes! It’s one of my most favourite meals but it has to be done well and be properly seasoned.

BoobyDazzler · 24/08/2024 11:59

I don’t mind a pea in bubble and squeak tbh! Any left of veg will do… except possibly parsnips

housethatbuiltme · 24/08/2024 12:00

Mash potato with cabbage in, depending on area it maybe a pile or fried little potato cake type I think.

StormingNorman · 24/08/2024 12:01

Leftover vegetables and potatoes squashed together in a patty and fried in my house. Bonus points if it has Brussels sprouts!

SusieSussex · 24/08/2024 12:02

Fried cabbage and potato

Dymaxion · 24/08/2024 12:03

Its left over roast dinner, preferably roast pork, lots of onion fried with the meat and a bit of sage if you have any, then add the left over veggies, then potatoes in any form, roasties or mash and then cook it until there is a crispy layer and serve. I have it with lashing's of HP sauce, but I am common as much Grin

Dymaxion · 24/08/2024 12:04

I always have savoy cabbage in mine for texture Wink

longdistanceclaraclara · 24/08/2024 12:05

Oh that is sad but it's what my local breakfast cafe does. Learnt my lesson there!

Boxing Day bubble is my favourite meal over Christmas. I put everything left over in it.

How miserable. What a disappointment. They could've fried it. Did you get your money back?

Pascha · 24/08/2024 12:12

There's a cafe on the edge of town which does it right. I love it from there but we were elsewhere.

We were at an old fashioned place in town and I thought I would be OK but they've obviously never eaten it themselves as what I got was wrong.
I left it and got a sausage sandwich instead which was perfectly fine.

Great meal.

Crinkle77 · 24/08/2024 12:16

Yes, love it!

Storynanny1 · 24/08/2024 12:17

My favourite meal of the whole Christmas and new year period. I do it like my mum did in the 50’s and 60’s. Left over roast potatoes, sprouts, parsnips and carrots mashed together with a bit of Worcestershire sauce. Fried in a thin layer in a big frying pan. Flipped over and then I add a bit of grated cheese.
Off to buy some sprouts as I really want it this weekend.
Back in the day it was a money saving meal on a Monday or Boxing Day and wasn’t considered anything special - funny how it’s become a yummy treat. My local cafe serves it with a choice of bacon and egg or bacon and sausage. It’s one of their best sellers and is always sold out by about 11.30!
edited to add that my mother would be horrified by the additional of grated cheese as that wasn’t traditional!

Hatty65 · 24/08/2024 12:18

I'd have said to them, 'You CAN'T advertise that as bubble and squeak! It's not'.

And sent it back. Never eat there again..

my understanding is left overs of usually traditional sunday dinner, shallow fryed @Pascha

NeverDropYourMooncup · 24/08/2024 12:18

Yer basic Bubble is leftover potatoes - roast and boiled, maybe some mash (although leftover mash is something I've only ever heard of, mind, never actually seen it in the wild), thinly sliced onions of some description, cooked brassicas and then you add whatever else is leftover, such as the apocryphal leftover roast snips, swede or carrot, all fried until there is a crispy layer cradling soft and tender spud/veg, topped with a fried egg, easy over and covered with salt and white pepper.

Just put a request in for it on Monday morning (with an insurance choice of potato scones, assuming he discovers where left over mash can be acquired) thanks to this.

Technically, carrots and peas are probably acceptable but grim as it can be any leftover vegetables with potato… but if it wasn’t fried, it’s not bubble and squeak! The name comes from the sounds it makes when it is cooking. You might as well serve a bowl of boiled rice and call it Rice Krispies or pour bechamel sauce on Spaghetti Bolognaise and call it lasagne 😂

Does anyone just make this with the intention of making it rather than using leftovers to make it. Does that even make sense???

It sounds amazing but I never really have leftovers!!

I sometimes make extra vegetables, roast potatoes, yorkshires, stuffing when I make a roast dinner just so we can have bubble and squeak. In fact I sometimes make so much extra that I freeze portions to make the bubble and squeak!

I always make far too much Christmas dinner so we can have it on Boxing Day
