Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

Yes, of course.
What did they serve you? Was it horrible?

Theleaveswillbefalling · 24/08/2024 11:12

Yes, what did they give you?

MagratsDanglyCharms21 · 24/08/2024 11:12

Um... cabbage and potato?

ShowOfHands · 24/08/2024 11:12

Of course.

Ineffable23 · 24/08/2024 11:12

I think it's potatoes and cabbage fried up, preferably as a patty, and maybe if you're lucky bacon mixed in to make it really tasty.

TheDandyLion · 24/08/2024 11:13

Boxing day is not boxing day without bubble and squeak.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 24/08/2024 11:13

I thought it was a fried mixture of cabbage and mashed potato?

Haven’t had it for YEARS.

SoftandQuiet · 24/08/2024 11:13

Yes. What did you get?

InfradeadToUltraviolent · 24/08/2024 11:13

What did they present you with? TBH I'd be reluctant to have it in a restaurant, it's a home cooking leftover meal whose charm lies in its imperfections and randomness.

Mmmmm bubble n squeak. Potatoes, cabbage/sprouts, bonus bacon.

MILLYmo0se · 24/08/2024 11:14

Left overs of a roast dinner, usually veg but I often dice up meat, mashed into a patty and fried?

Moier · 24/08/2024 11:14

Cabbage and mash potatoes fried together in butter. Rather like colcannon fried .
I once ordered it in a restaurant and got mash with peas in.🤷‍♀️

DoTheRoary · 24/08/2024 11:14

@Pascha please tell us what they served you! I love homemade bubble and squeak (my mum's of course, mine never comes out the same).

movehimintothesun · 24/08/2024 11:15

Bubble and Squeak - best meal ever, and Boxing Day treat every year. Trouble is in our house, it's rare that there are any Yorkshire pudding leftovers to put in, and Yorkshire pudding bits makes it best of the best!
Best served with baked beans and Tomato sauce.
How sad that you had a disappointment this morning, what did you get? 🧐

Topseyt123 · 24/08/2024 11:15

Fried cabbage or Brussel sprouts mixed with mashed potato and fried as a patty.

PerkyMintDeer · 24/08/2024 11:15

Without looking up, I think it's leftover veg (cabbage, swede, carrots, sprouts etc) chopped up, mixed with mashed potatoes, shaped into rounds and fried up. Sometimes we put bacon, pigs in blankets or bits of stuffing through it. Served with fried eggs usually.

That's our bubble and squeak.

GoldenPineapple15 · 24/08/2024 11:15

Of course . Best but after the Sunday dinner itself . The edges have to be all crispy .

2dogsandabudgie · 24/08/2024 11:16

Yes, my mum used to make it for us when we were kids, it's potato and cabbage fried.

UnimaginableWindBird · 24/08/2024 11:16

I love the intensely savoury crispy bits.

Yes, please tell you what you were actually served.

TheFlis · 24/08/2024 11:16

Yes my parents both love it.

Beth216 · 24/08/2024 11:16

Yum, love it. Already cooked potato and cabbage mushed up into a burger shape and fried till it's brown and crispy.

Deadringer · 24/08/2024 11:17

I think it's Cabbage and potato, I have never had it as I hate Cabbage. What did you get, mushy peas in soggy mash?

movehimintothesun · 24/08/2024 11:18

All the people saying it's cabbage - it doesn't have to be cabbage, it's any leftover veg, whatever you like!

Yes, I think this is more the modern day version.

Pretty much leftover roast dinner all chopped up and fried until crispy and gorgeous. DH has HP sauce. I like Tommy K or beans or best a fried egg.
