Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

LOL, USA weighing in. Yep, I do know what it is, and when I was able to stand for longer periods of time, used to make it. I became interested in English/UK cookery LONG ago, because I was fascinated with some of the names of the dishes.

Poor show from the breakfast people.

Some variation though; we don't put bacon in. It's generally Boxing Day for us so that means finely chopped Brussels sprouts and carrot in mash, fried as a mega-pattie and then flipped over in sections and re-smoothed several times. It means you get browned bits in random places. It has to be dark brown; slight char.

Cabbage/sprouts/potato fried up and squished altogether yum. Our family favourite boxing day meal served with cold turkey/ham and pickles 😋 My kids loved it probably more than the Christmas dinner 😊

I think it’s left over potatoes and veg made into a patty and fried. If you were making it not using leftovers it would be potato and cabbage maybe spring onions

Cabbage and potato burgers.
I've tried to make it once 😅
After a pub in Japan gave me something very different to the Bubble & Squeak that I'd ordered off the menu.
I think it's named after the way it's supposed to bubble and make squeaking noises while it's frying.
xx

Did not RTFT.
Am not British born.
I think it's sausages & mashed potatoes with gravy.

(google... ahhhh... I had one ingredient right).

Who eats cabbage nowadays? It's hardly a true staple now.

Various types of cabbage are a staple in so many countries. I’ve seen literally millions of them growing on the side of a hill (an ex volcano) in Indonesia.

Cabbage is not exactly fashionable now, but it’s a relatively cheap and very nutritious vegetable, still very popular in this house - both green and white, and incidentally white cabbage makes a lovely crunchy addition to any salad, and keeps very well in the fridge. I add both types to stir-fries, too.

Edited

My kids called okonomiyake "Japancakes" when they were little and the name kind of stuck.
