Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

I'm with you OP. This was my 'bacon and scrambled eggs' in Buxton. The eggs were cut up cold hard boiled eggs.

Strictly speaking, they were scrambled...
I mean, I don't think the King's horses or King's men will be putting those eggs back together..!

Bubble and Squeak - best meal ever, and Boxing Day treat every year. Trouble is in our house, it's rare that there are any Yorkshire pudding leftovers to put in, and Yorkshire pudding bits makes it best of the best!
Best served with baked beans and Tomato sauce.
How sad that you had a disappointment this morning, what did you get? 🧐

This is an abomination.

Bubble and squeak is roughly mashed potato friend with cabbage/ sprouts until there are plenty of crispy brown burned bits. Some friend onion and a few bits of bacon are also allowed. Loads of salt and pepper.

Meat, Yorkshire pudding or anything else make it the bastard lovechild of B+S and not worthy of the name. And serving it with beans... No, it's served with cold meat (ham, turkey, beef) on Boxing Day.

I know what it is but I've never made it or eaten it

Pastit12 · 24/08/2024 14:16

Our bubble and squeak which my dad used to make us was always any veg leftover from Sunday roast mashed up and fried butter usually had it for Sunday tea or maybe done Monday with sausages on the side delicious 😋

Mashed potato
Frozen peas and carrot mix 😕

No cabbage or any green veg, no crispy bacon bits, no onion. Wasn't even fried. No salty, crispy edges, no crust. No flavour.

Just toddler style. Mixed up mash and veg.

I was so sad.

Lol! Oh that is sad - I would honestly have sent it back and got something else.

Left over Sunday dinner all cut/mashed up and fried. Brown sauce of course !!

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 24/08/2024 13:50

Why would there be bacon in it?

I'm not a huge bacon fan but chopped up and fried to crispiness with the potato and veg makes a nice salty crunchy addition.

That is upsetting, I agree.

Christmas dinner leftovers mashed up, fried and served with gravy on Boxing Day?

alwaysmovingforwards · 24/08/2024 14:28

I’m a Londoner, so of course. A greasy spoon breakfast isn't as advertised without it!

Viviennemary · 24/08/2024 14:29

I know because it was always in books I read as a child

Somuchbetternow · 24/08/2024 14:33

Damn it I need it now with a fried egg on but have no leftovers. I’ll have to cheat and use fresh mash and veg but it’s never as good

MikeRafone · 24/08/2024 14:33

Yes, always cook extra vegetables and potato to make bubble and squeak on Boxing Day, and the day after

We do too - we often prefer it to the meal on Christmas Day .

There isn't bacon in bubble and squeek

its typically cabbage and roast potatoes mashed up and friend - but other vegetable get thrown in as well as to not waste the food after a roast dinner. You slowly fry the potato mixture to make a crust that is nice and crispy

Do you eat suet pudding with your roast?

mitogoshi · 24/08/2024 14:46

Leftover vegetables chopped up and fried eg potatoes and cabbage/brussels as a base then whatever else you have

mitogoshi · 24/08/2024 14:47

Peas never should be in bubble and squeak either

HoraceGoesBonkers · 24/08/2024 15:03

I once got scrambled egg for breakfast in a hotel. The texture was really, really odd and I think they'd blended the eggs rather than beating them. Urgh. I was so disappointed.

Tangerinenets · 24/08/2024 15:04

In my house it’s all the left over roast/christmas dinner mashed up together and fried .
