Without looking it up, do you know what Bubble and squeak is?

Bet it wasn't what I ended up with this morning with my cooked breakfast in town.
I was really disappointed.

At our annual family Xmas party one of the family members does a cracking bubble and squeak for our breakfast. Essentially all left overs from the Christmas dinner goes in, the cranberry sauce makes it particularly yummy 🤤

Boxing day is not boxing day without bubble and squeak.

Yep Grin

Traditionally, bubble and squeak is cabbage and potato but you can put in any veg you have leftover.

Colcannon is similar afaik, but you don't fry it and serve as a patty.

Colcannon should be freshly cooked mash.

Bubble and squeak is reheated usually the day after.

I'm really "poorly sick" and I now I'm having intense Bubble and Squeak cravings...the Boxing Day edition...considering doing a "whoosh" shop...dosing myself up on the medicine cabinet contents and cracking on with peeling, prepping and roasting a shitload of veg for this very purpose.

Would a nationwide Bubble and Squeak delivery service be a good business idea do we think? A Bubble and Squeak Drive Thru?

AliceMcK · 24/08/2024 13:02

Yes, my DFs favourite he would make it all the time.

ThatsNotMyTeen · 24/08/2024 13:04

Other than involving cabbage, not sure

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 24/08/2024 13:05

I think traditionally Bubble and Squeak was any left over veg, all squashed together with an egg to bind and then fried. So I'd suppose that bubble and squeak is whatever you want it to be. But nowadays it's become a food in its own right, and usually cabbage and mashed potato, maybe with onion and bacon bits.

This is why I always make it myself if I want it. Someone is going to quote the 'it's just leftovers' at you if you order in a cafe, and I'm not usually wanting whatever they've got 'left over'.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 24/08/2024 13:06

I know roughly what it is, leftover veg from a roast dinner mixed together and fried. If think maybe cabbage or sprouts and suede would be traditional although not 100% sure.

Wheresthebeach · 24/08/2024 13:07

That's NOT Bubble and Squeak, that's a monstrosity.

MargaretThursday · 24/08/2024 13:08

Yes! Dm always cooked it for Monday lunch with left over veg from the Sunday roast.

Yes, I think this is more the modern day version.

Does the world need a modern version, though? I mean, why tartify simple perfection?
😀

godmum56 · 24/08/2024 13:26

OP I hope you complained?

Pascha · 24/08/2024 13:27

I swapped it for a sausage sandwich.

It was always left overs from a roast dinner all mashed up together with butter and fried, absolutely delicious

Yes! Stuffing especially good in it as well.

Traditionally, I think it's potato and cabbage fried until it's crispy and brown but I throw in any leftover veg (not peas though!).

Sprouts are good

saidthebellsofstclements · 24/08/2024 13:34

I wouldn't know, obviously reading the responses I now do and I must say fried potatoes, sprouts cabbage sounds gross!
We always have pancakes or bagels for Boxing Day breakfast

ClaudineMallory · 24/08/2024 13:34

Yes of course! I've been eating it for decades, love it!

Quite!

ThePrologue · 24/08/2024 13:37

Could we agree to a post Christmas/sunday roast b & s and a traditional cabbage abd potato versions?
Nothing else is acceptable, sweetcorn in particular

Rude 😔

I wouldn't describe my way of making B&S as modern or "tartified".

It's a "peasant" dish and has always been a way of using up leftover food. That's all I'm doing. And if you take a look on Wiki, early versions included beef and all sorts we wouldn't expect to be in it today.

Fahran · 24/08/2024 13:44

Yes. Fried cabbage and potato, or any other leftover vegetable.

NiceCutRoundDomeDormice · 24/08/2024 13:50

Pascha · 24/08/2024 11:50

Mashed potato
Frozen peas and carrot mix 😕

No cabbage or any green veg, no crispy bacon bits, no onion. Wasn't even fried. No salty, crispy edges, no crust. No flavour.

Just toddler style. Mixed up mash and veg.

I was so sad.

Why would there be bacon in it?

Inlaw · 24/08/2024 13:55

I know what it is when I have a good one 🤣 I can however never make it properly so god knows what it actually is.

I did not mean to be rude @PerkyMintDeer!
I used the word tartify in the same way as bling, not as a derogatory word. And in a joking way as this thread seemed quite light-hearted. Clearly I mis-read the tone
I apologise for offending you, it was not my intention.
