the safe routes one. Some of the people on there are properly mad.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/08/2023 18:46

Not only do we need to reduce the population, but we need a labour shortage to drive up wages.

Anxioys · 14/08/2023 19:10

The point is that they are just talking to that 25 percent who always vote Conservative; it's the don't knows who will determine who wins. Even saying that kind of thing now seems to get ire from some.

Don't knows probably vote based on what they are getting and what's in their pocket.

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2023 19:25

I am confused by the need to reduce population as their NatC heroes are saying we need more babies

Yup. Falling birth rate. Not enough people of working age. Huge loss of EU workers from Brexit but somehow the population’s too high. 🤷‍♀️

pointythings · 14/08/2023 19:43

We need authentic red, white and blue British babies who will wave the flag from birth, never expect little things like clean water, safe food, comfortable and affordable housing and paid holidays. Not the other kind.

Anxioys · 14/08/2023 19:48

It's all grist for new Conservative leadership challenge.

Bit premature, they’ve got to lose the GE first.

Tiniest violin for Priti Patel.

Whilst I agree it's ridiculous that Patel of all people should accuse the Government of secrecy & deception, I've read her letter and would be interested to know the answers.

It was passed as a emergency temporary site for a 12 month period - the impact studies would have been based on that. So if they are planning to use it for 5 years then it should be reassessed.

Also interesting is that on the one hand the Government is claiming only they can stop people coming - but on the other they seem to have 5 year plans for housing asylum seekers. So clearly aren't expecting to clear the backlog anytime soon.

Interesting also that the Bibby Stockholm was assessed as being value for money only if it housed 1000.
So they are chucking vast amounts of money at pet projects knowing that they are not good value.

Oh missed that. Who are we getting? I can’t find anything online. Please tell me it’s not Hancock!

My town currently has that Anthony Browne that is blue and uses green leaflets suddenly loving our town ( aka shark circling)
However due to boundary changes you may have a different candidate.
The thing is that Anthony Browne fella is already MP for south Cambs but I think he might be doing a bit of run from the yellow vote the boundary changes will have in his patch so he has found a barbers here and a cake shop and a cafe and wants all kind of ideas of how to make the town better.
The thing is people just think ( mainly because we currently have an MP that never shows his face and can't be bothered to turn up for hustings) this Browne, blue green fella actually cares. His voting record shows he doesn't really Hmm

Kiwano · 15/08/2023 00:33

I'm afraid I didn't copy the link, but I saw a report earlier to the effect that government procurement rules meant that they shouldn't have signed any contract for the stupid barge until after they had clear legionella tests.

Oops.

Blossomtoes · 15/08/2023 07:12

Of course they shouldn’t but when has this government ever taken any notice of its own rules? It pissed all over its procurement processes in 2020 to enrich the likes of Michelle Mone. I wonder which of its friends has benefited from Bibby Stockholm?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/08/2023 09:13

On the news last night Steven Barclay said government were informed about the legionella on Thursday evening and took immediate action to evacuate the asylum seekers on Friday.

The local council said they informed government about the legionella on Tuesday. So somebody is lying.

(No explanation offered of them evacuating some asylum seekers on Thursday morning because of legionella despite not knowing about it)

Anxioys · 15/08/2023 09:56

You need to factor in a day of blind panic in Whitehall (Wednesday) when the news came in.

At least half that day will have been "what do we tell Suella because this is law".

Government is more "The Thick of It" than many can imagine

Apart from the differing timescales in dispute.

Imagine saying "we were informed of the CO on Thursday and took immediate action to evacuate Friday"

Or replace with another highly infection disease or even a fire.

There idea of immediate is quite alarming.

ITV news last night said 3 of the asylum seekers showing signs of possible legionnaires disease

Jesus fuck, if they turn out to have it then Suella and Co belong in jail.

Steve Barclay told the BBC that 'no-one has been harmed'. Surely he wouldn't be lying in 2 interviews on the trot, ministerial code and all that.

How does he know? It’s less than a week since they admitted it. That statement seems a tad premature to me.

Well they knew to evacuate some asylum seekers because of the legionella before they were informed of there being legionella. So I'm assuming they used that same power of clairvoyance to declare them all unharmed.

Piggywaspushed · 15/08/2023 11:28

I am an expert on this, having actually succumbed to legionella in the dim past.

Symptoms come on fairly quickly, a bit like food poisoning, so within 25 to 72 hours generally .

What are the chances that a person started displaying symptoms and then someone decided to check the legionella test results 🤔
