The Conservatives risk being seen once again as the “nasty party”

too late.

A large part of that is their complete blinkered focus on trying to achieve a badly thought out ‘pledge’ without following any kind of moral compass or taking note of any (what could be constructive) criticism. It’s all too easy to brush off because their egotistical echo chambers are lined with opportunities to increase personal bank balances.

Way too late, they've been the Nasty Party for 4 years and started heading that way in 2016.

DuncinToffee · 13/08/2023 13:21

Exactly, they knew what they voted for when they selected Johnson as leader

I think they started well before 2016. Austerity was pretty nasty.

That is true, but austerity was at least part of the Tory party's economic ideology, and always was. Plenty of these so-called moderate Tories defended it and would defend it again. This extreme hateful and populist rhetoric on the other hand hasn't always been part of the party's DNA. It's a step too far for a lot of people, especially those who aren't wedded (or welded) to a particular party affiliation even if they aren't really floating voters.

Yep. Osborne wanted to do nasty (or even nastier I should say) stuff with disability benefits in the name of austerity, but didn't quite get away with it.

Blossomtoes · 13/08/2023 13:40

They’ve definitely got worse in this iteration, ie since 2010. Out of idle curiosity I had a look at the 1992 Tory manifesto the other day - the one for the election Major was astonished to win. It’s absolutely jaw dropping in its reasonableness. I found myself thinking “I could vote for this”. It really is a reality check on how things have changed.

@Blossomtoes its quite stark where we are today reading that isn’t it? I simply can’t imagine Rishi or any of the well known players of the last few years been able to write something like that convincingly.

itsgettingweird · 13/08/2023 15:59

Yes that's quite stark.

It's like reading something inbetween the current options we have.

In some ways because it sells putting businesses out of state control - but we are seeing the clusterfuck that was 30 years later with excessive fuel bills, sewage being pumped into waters etc. those companies got the business but it didn't come with responsibility.

It talks so much about the public services - this lot have all but destroyed them.

It talks about the environment - Rishi has just backtracked on our climate change pledges.

It's very well written and sells the idea of conservatism well. And in practice I'm sure much of it would be successful.

But mainly it shows how far the Tory party has strayed from its routes (whether you agree or disagree with their beliefs) over the past 3 decades.

Blossomtoes · 13/08/2023 16:04

I know. Around that time I had a child benefit issue I was getting nowhere with and wrote to Major as my MP to ask if he could help. It was all sorted in two weeks so I wrote to say thank you. I added that, brilliant as he was as a constituency MP, his policies meant I could never vote for him. You really don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone, do you?

ThatbloodyRoblox · 13/08/2023 19:55

@Blossomtoes
I think I may have the same MP as you currently- if you are still in sane area. Of course this may not be the same due to the boundary changes coming in.
We have currently the next "wannabe our MP" posting photos of him visiting the town and going the cafe, barbers etc.
He is currently MP down the road but thinking his options will be much better here next time so he has found us Confused

Blossomtoes · 13/08/2023 20:11

Oh missed that. Who are we getting? I can’t find anything online. Please tell me it’s not Hancock!

Taking a leaf out of Bravermans SM book then.

She's always posting pics of her in cake shops saying how wonderful they are!

Happy NHS week everyone. Hopefully it’s as successful as small boats week.

jgw1 · 14/08/2023 08:23

I understand that all the problems with the NHS are down to 1300 people with TB, and the solution to that is to stop all travel to the UK.

RafaistheKingofClay · 14/08/2023 08:51

That and waste and inefficiency and nothing to do with money. What no one seems to be able to explain is why it suddenly became wasteful and inefficient in around 2010. What was it that happened around that time that caused waiting lists to start rising.

Notonthestairs · 14/08/2023 08:52

Lots of faffing about who knew what/when re legionella on the barge.

Point is - nobody should have moved on to the barge before the results came in.

Nobody should have been moved before the results in order to facilitate a Number 10 Comms campaign.

Fucks sakes. Where is the ethical government in that?

MrTiddlesTheCat · 14/08/2023 08:53

No, no, no. The problems with the NHS are all caused by fat people and the cost of living crisis isn't a crisis, it's the fruition of a government plan to drive up food prices in order to force people to eat less and save the NHS. The only people who complain about high inflation are those that hate the NHS.

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2023 09:06

Both Barclay and Harries seem to be saying that legionella is nothing to worry about, noone got hurt Hmm

Too late for me. Although I knew what it was when I posted.

If Jenny Harries says something is nothing to worry about, you should definitely worry.

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2023 09:12

So NHS week is all about scrapping waiting list targets?

L1ttledrummergirl · 14/08/2023 09:15

Me too.

DuncinToffee · 14/08/2023 09:18

I am staying away from that one, I see the cloudy one is asking the same questions yet again.
