I'm working from home tomorrow. Are we expecting a count tonight do we know, or is it likely to be tomorrow?

I think there is a Beeb programme on the results from midnight?

I am hoping I sleep well tonight (unusual) because if I wake at some ungodly hour (usual) I will be tempted to put the telly on and I'll be like GE and the US one... watching, and I have lots to do tomorrow!

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2023 20:18

Party of financial responsibility 🙄
Tax payers alliance doing very nicely out of the Government.

new documents show that severance pay for government special advisers went through the roof last year amid the political mayhem:

  • £99,000 in 2021/22
  • £2,900,000 in 2022/23

(a 29-fold increase)

hat-tip @EmilyThornberry

At least eight of the SPADs who benefitted from £2.9 million in severance payments during the political chaos of 2022 had previously worked for the Taxpayers Alliance - including its co-founder Matthew Elliot. Can I have my money back please?

I have to go into work tomorrow so will catch up with the results tomorrow. As soon as a GE is called, I will request the day after off work because that's a priority.

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2023 20:53

Sorry- meant to say thanks for the new thread!

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/07/2023 21:00

@pointythings, me too.

I also meant to say thanks for the new thread.

I’m in one of the voting constituencies- I’m a bit worried about turnout. I’ve drives past the polling station four or five times today and it always seems dead quiet - I was the only voter present when I voted on my way to work at 8.30…

do we know when we are likely to get results? I work in a mobile phone blackspot
sonof it’s not announced before 8.30 I won’t get to know til I’ve finished!!

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2023 21:08

I think 3am onwards for results.

Piggywaspushed · 20/07/2023 21:09

There has been so little on the news about it for weeks. The excitement wore off really early.

😬 I have been wondering what turnout was like.

It's a culture wars dog whistle. It helps nobody, it protects nobody. I think @AdamRyan should be in charge of policy on this issue - we need practical, compassionate, safe policies. No pandering to extremists on both sides.
Agree.

Working in education I can see why there needs to be some sort of policy. It was getting to a point half a class would be expecting different pronouns and names all the time and used as it a control way. And I believe that really minimises the experiences of kids who are genuinely struggling.

But to shut down the conversation at all is counter productive too. And ime some pupils questioning their identity aren't actually trans but have other issues going on,are seeking attention and/ or control and need the adults in their life (and sometimes the ones who listen are at school) to support them.

It's not an area that a black and white policy can be drawn up.

——————-

I hope you don’t mind me c&p’ing from the last thread @itsgettingweird. Your post sums up my concerns in the trans debate and there doesn’t seem to be any type of moderate conversation at the moment. Expectations at both ends are ridiculously high/unrealistic. I suspect any productive progress will be decried by both ends and at this point I suppose that’s how we know a balance has been achieved 🤷‍♀️

Thanks for all the kind comments. I've been having a shit time at work so it's nice to have some positive feedback!

The gender debate has gone so weird. About 10 years ago I was getting called a transphobe for saying I didn't think trans women and women were the same, now I get stick for not being GC enough. My opinion hasn't changed.

The politicians have played political football with this and meanwhile women, children and trans people suffer. Its bad really, surely the whole point of democracy is to find the acceptable ground, not polarise the debate.

AdamRyan · 20/07/2023 21:55

Anyway, I think actually we should probably stay away from the trans debate in case we get visitors.

I don't understand why the Nigel Farage thing is such big news? Is it a squirrel?

Cornettoninja · 20/07/2023 22:00

@AdamRyan there was a caller to LBC today who was a teacher and raised similar concerns to you. It was thought provoking that there needs to be a balance of allowing young people to express who they are and putting boundaries in place to prevent them causing themselves harm primarily.

I’d like to think that a more thoughtful conversation around trans/GC can emerge.

Cornettoninja · 20/07/2023 22:01

you’re probably right.

God knows. The Telegraph was almost nothing else today. I’m sick to death of hearing about Farage this week.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 20/07/2023 22:32

Farage didn't give a shit when thousands of brits in the EU lost their bank accounts because of dickheads like him.

Notonthestairs · 20/07/2023 23:03

A cynic might think that Farage had worked out they'd be a news vacuum this week - especially today and capitalised on that.
Fascinating that so many Tory MPs raced in to comment. I suppose they worry he'll return to the fray (which he will). Braverman etc won't want him taking up too much space. He could easily outmanoeuvre them on their preferred culture wars issues.

But it was utterly ridiculous that Sunak was unable to find the time to read 6 page Privileges Committee report and yet was able to review Farage's 40 page SAR and provide a comment.

I do think losing access to a bank account is serious and deserves attention. Although I note he was offered alternative, albeit lesser, services.

So I think it's a news story but not a wall to wall coverage, 3 questions in Parliament, requires Cabinet minister/PM commentary 'sinister forces' story.

Maybe Johnson should have put his £18k towards his legal advice bill.

"Exc: The final fee for Boris Johnson's legal costs during the privileges committee inquiry is £265,522.

The Cabinet Office decided to extend the budget by £20,000, to help the PM fight inquiry into his Partygate denials."

BREAKING: Lib Dems tell @amandaakass that they are declaring victory in Somerton & Frome by-election

Seems premature??

Blossomtoes · 20/07/2023 23:42

I don’t really begrudge Tom Scholar the money. The way he was treated was an absolute disgrace.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/07/2023 23:44

The BBC have been softening us up for tory losses, Labour have been campaigning hard, Uxbridge only voted for Johnson, it's not a full election so it doesn't count, labour will win Uxbridge by a landslide ...

Tomorrow it will be all about how it's better for the tories than everyone expected, turnout was low, nobody cares enough about politics to vote so happy with the status quo.

I hope they get an absolute pasting.

Bloody hope they are right!
