Labour is now downplaying the chance of good news in Uxbridge - with one source saying it’s incredibly tight and could go either way

😬
Must stop looking for updates.

Party of financial responsibility 🙄
Tax payers alliance doing very nicely out of the Government.

new documents show that severance pay for government special advisers went through the roof last year amid the political mayhem:

  • £99,000 in 2021/22
  • £2,900,000 in 2022/23

(a 29-fold increase)

Bloody hell. How on earth does the government have that sort of money to spare when it allegedly can't afford to keep schools in decent repair or put any money into paying doctors properly?

Kiwano · 20/07/2023 23:59

Are those predictions based on exit polls?

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2023 00:02

Paying off SpAds doesn't impact inflation or something.

Who knew having 3 different PMs in a matter of months would be so expensive.

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2023 00:03

No exit polls for by elections - I don't know why.

the80sweregreat · 21/07/2023 02:57

The conservatives have held Uxbridge and Ruislip
I was hoping labour would take this seat.

Was very close

The final count was 13,965 for Steve Tuckwell, of the Conservative Party, and 13,470 for Labour's Danny Beales

cakeorwine · 21/07/2023 04:11

Yes - I've stayed up for this one (well, I woke up early)

Labour have won Selby and Ainsty, achieving the greatest numerical overturned by Labour ever in the party’s history.

35,886 votes were cast, with 69 ballots rejected.

The results are as follows:

Labour: 16,456

Conservatives: 12,295

Yorkshire party: 1,503

Reform UK: 1,332

Independent: 99

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2023 04:27

Shame about Uxbridge but two good kickings makes up for it.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2023 04:55

Another who came straight to checking results when up!!!

Although I'm always up this early as ds is a swimmer 🤣🤣

Great that there were 2 gains. And Uxbridge was close.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2023 05:13

The emphasis being put on Uxbridge is a shame. Those are huge hammering for the Tories in Frome and Selby.

tobee · 21/07/2023 05:15

I've just woken up on my short holiday in France, (briefly I hope) scratching my mozzie bites, perusing the news and catching up on this thread.

Thank god for the Selby biggest overturned majority result which my change the optic of the headlines, which would surely be focused on holding of Uxbridge by Tories.

Also, new MP's youth will garner sone words I daresay.

Still annoying about Uxbridge and fucking Johnson popping up to have his Ulez say the other day. Grrr. I also, I'm afraid, think the ulez expansion is. not a good policy. And wish it could be dropped. Its obviously easily spun as/actually is going to impact the less well off more. Being green often isn't cheap.

tobee · 21/07/2023 05:16

X post with @Piggywaspushed

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2023 05:26

I've already got the song "Two out of three ain't bad" going round in my head!

jgw1 · 21/07/2023 05:41

Of note in all three seats is that the 3rd party (Lib Dems in Uxbridge and Selby, Labour in Frome) vote dropped significantly.

Tory proportion of the vote down more than 25% in the two seats they lost and even in Uxbridge their share of the vote fell.

IClaudine · 21/07/2023 05:43

What a shame about Uxbridge, the Tories will be relieved.

The new MP for Frome said as much in her acceptance speech.
If the absent MP for Mid Bedfordshire ever remembers she was going to resign with immediate effect that will be interesting in that respect since both Labour and Lib Dems may fancy their chances.

tobee · 21/07/2023 05:53

What's the betting she's gonna leave it til the GE?

jgw1 · 21/07/2023 05:58

I'm going to be contrary.

I don't think Uxbridge is a particularly bad result for Labour. It may mean that the party is not complacent when it comes to GE and equally importantly may focus the anyone but the pig in a blue rosette vote on the candidate most likely to win.

Plus a near 7% swing to Labour from Tories is still signficant.

Shame her verbal resignation wasn't enough. She did announce in front of millions she was going to go.

Given that she resigned in protest at a liar being called a liar, it is somewhat ironic that her resignation is a lie.

Zonder · 21/07/2023 06:13

Yes. She should be held to account. Her word is her word!

Don't be daft, her word isn't her word.

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2023 06:19

What a win in Selby! Amazing.

Will inevitably be drowned out by Uxbridge.

But Uxbridge also shows what tactical voting might achieve in a GE.
