Which is why the Conservatives in Mid Beds must be pulling their hair out - Dorries flouncing, continuing to be paid (and her daughters), writing a book about the plot to get rid of Johnson etc will be trashing their reputation - with Johnson voters who feel the party failed him and those Tory voters that dont like him.

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2023 08:24

Nigel Adams flouncing because he didnt get a peerage will have contributed to the Labour win in Selby. Dorries behaviour is far worse (which is saying something).

The lib Dems were always big in the west country in the 70s , so not surprised they did well yesterday. Might be a big resurgence for them in that part of the Uk?
I like the look of Selby's new MP
Only 25. Maybe one to watch ?

Johnny Mercer was so fucking rude about the new young MP. Called him an inbetweener, said he'd been more time in Uni than working.
Funny he isn't mentioning the 29 year old life peer appointed by Johnson isn't it....

IClaudine · 21/07/2023 09:02

Given how the middle aged people have fucked the country, I have no problem with a 25 year old.

As others have said, I hope the Uxbridge Tory hold sends a message to Labour that the job is not done yet. Starmer must stop fence sitting and being so scared of anything that is not Tory lite. He needs to find the fire in his belly.

We need a really exhaustive tactical voting campaign too, which Labour and the Lib Dems and maybe the Greens need to get behind.

I think/hope that this is something that will emerge once a GE is actually called. It feels like people are pressing for a level of campaigning that just doesn’t work at this point in time. Starmer is right to say that he’s not in a position to make pledges and policy for a situation that could still be eighteen months away. The UK is in a terrible position and he’s already said that a lot of his original leadership pledges simply aren’t possible right now because of how the country has changed in a relatively short period of time.

Unfortunately reality isn’t as attractive as lies can be so he’s always going to be on a back foot against the tories. Eighteen months is a long time to keep up public momentum and engagement in facts when as a country we’re utterly exhausted by the past few years especially.

The good news from Uxbridge is that Lawrence Fox isn’t going to get his deposit back. Somehow he’s claiming this as a win for reclaim.

IClaudine · 21/07/2023 09:18

Well, at least Foxy took a few hundred votes from the Tories. He is such a twit, though.

So agree with this.

Has anyone found this the longest Government in power ever? It just seems to be stretching out on and on and on

You have to look at this.

He's even more of a twat now. One of the comments below likens him to Alan B'Stard!

On the face of it, those results provide something for everyone, every party won a contest. The Uxbridge result provides some much needed cover for Rishi Sunak and No.10

But that would be the wrong way to look at it. These are appallingly bad results for the Conservatives.

Did I write that?

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2023 09:46

Yes I agree with Cornetto. We've got a long 16-18 months ahead.
It really does feel like the longest stint in Parliament.

You did indeed Smile

I know I’ve said this before but it’s like being held hostage. And, yes, it feels interminable.

mibbelucieachwell · 21/07/2023 09:59

Prof John Curtice saying it's a very bad result for the cons. Thankfully.

I live near Glasgow which started a low emission scheme in June. The penalty is £60 for the first day of bringing in a non compliant vehicle. Every subsequent infringement of the rules incurs a doubling of the penalty. I feel this should actually be effective, rather than a doable tax for wealthy polluters. However, hardly any vehicles won't comply - many diesel cars meet the low emission requirements for example. The council closed off several entrances and exits off the motorway, which runs right through the middle of Glasgow, with the result that traffic now has to go literally all round the houses through several fiddly little roads with many junctions and traffic lights to access some of the central residential areas. The zone is actually very small. Pollution in the low emission zone residential area close to the motorway might be increased? But it seems to be working as a strong incentive to get less polluting cars - which must be good.

DuncinToffee · 21/07/2023 10:01

Remind me who brought in Ulez?

On Ulez Rishi Sunak tells me

“It’s a perfect demonstration of everything that is wrong with the Labour Party. They just don’t understand the values and concerns of hardworking people”

He says it shows “how massively out of touch they are”

How strange @jgw1 - I've never heard of a man quoting a woman and getting a bigger and more appreciative audience for his original thoughts.

We appreciate you very much however.

jgw1 · 21/07/2023 10:08

What I think is remarkable in last nights results is that the only surprise is that Labour did not win Uxbridge.

There is no surprise that there was a 29% swing in Somerton and Frome, its hardly worth commenting on.
There is little surprise at a 24% swing in Selby and Aintsy.

That the swing was only 6.7% in Uxbridge is the surprise.

That is how unpopular the Tory government is.

DuncinToffee · 21/07/2023 10:18

Reading the BBC website you would think there was only one by-election

Tsk jgw1 this stunning failure by the Con party is actually a magnificent achievement in their eyes. Hanging on by the skin of their teeth - 500 votes! - is definitely something to brag about. Even Rishi's popped out of hiding and materialised in Uxbridge to grin at the cameras. Wonder how long it will be until they manage to kick him out for something worse. Nadine's at a loose end these days.
