Remind me who brought in Ulez?

On Ulez Rishi Sunak tells me

“It’s a perfect demonstration of everything that is wrong with the Labour Party. They just don’t understand the values and concerns of hardworking people”

He says it shows “how massively out of touch they are”

It’s in the tip of my tongue….

mibbelucieachwell · 21/07/2023 10:55

Hard working people die from the effects of pollution.

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2023 10:56

According to Ed Davey there are 15 West Country Tory seats with smaller majorities than the one they upended last night. This includes Rees Mogg’s 😂

I genuinely think ULEZ (and other measures for climate change and pollution) will be one of those things people in the future will be astounded there was so much foot dragging over.

It’s hard but it is necessary and unlike other measures people can brush off as ‘well china is worse than us’ ‘what difference can we make’ when it has direct and measurable benefits to the immediate population.

We desperately need anti Tories to vote tactically in seats like those.

I don’t mind admitting that I will take great delight in anything that fucks over JRM. Odious twerp that he is.

I wonder whether he'd actually have the guts to stand, if he did genuinely feel there was a real chance he'd lose his seat?

Me too. Seeing him lose his seat would be a Portillo moment x 1000.

mibbelucieachwell · 21/07/2023 12:40

The thing that most annoys me about JRM is his patronising comments, often used to try to tell people they don't know what they're talking about because they don't work in Parliament, which are factually incorrect. And despite being such an expert on Parliamentary procedure he illegally prorogued it. What a hypocrite.

His history book was slated by actual historians.

I suppose he's so regularly, reliably wrong that he at least should be credited with being consistent l

I genuinely don’t know if he possess that level of self awareness. Interesting experiment maybe.

I'm pretty sure there would have been people complaining about the costs of the 1956 clean air act despite the great smog of 1952.

Without a doubt. There’s been arguments against everything we pretty much take for granted now - introduction of the age of consent, legislation to prevent children working, legislation to ensure that all children have access to education - the list is endless.

LittleBowSheep · 21/07/2023 13:56

So Sunak thinks that scraping a win with less than 500 votes in Uxbridge is some sort of victory.

He has said that the next general election is not a 'done deal' for Labour.

I say bring it on and let's find out.

That was always the line he'd have to take, regardless of whether he actually believes it. Fwiw I expect he is genuinely relieved.

Interesting though that he says the next GE isn't a done deal for Labour, rather than talking up the prospect of a Tory win. Because they're not at all the same thing.

Blossomtoes · 21/07/2023 14:08

I think Sunak’s a realist. He knows - along with the rest of his party - that unless there’s divine intervention they’re done for. It’s what’s making them all so tetchy in all their media interviews.

StormShadow · 21/07/2023 14:11

He definitely knows they're done for. If he thought there was any chance they weren't going to be eviscerated at the next GE he'd have said that.

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2023 16:03

Given how the middle aged people have fucked the country, I have no problem with a 25 year old.

I agree. In fact I'd welcome a lot younger across the board. These people are who the future of the country matters too. (Iyswim?)

itsgettingweird · 21/07/2023 16:03

Cornettoninja · 21/07/2023 09:09

Starmer must stop fence sitting and being so scared of anything that is not Tory lite. He needs to find the fire in his belly

I think/hope that this is something that will emerge once a GE is actually called. It feels like people are pressing for a level of campaigning that just doesn’t work at this point in time. Starmer is right to say that he’s not in a position to make pledges and policy for a situation that could still be eighteen months away. The UK is in a terrible position and he’s already said that a lot of his original leadership pledges simply aren’t possible right now because of how the country has changed in a relatively short period of time.

Unfortunately reality isn’t as attractive as lies can be so he’s always going to be on a back foot against the tories. Eighteen months is a long time to keep up public momentum and engagement in facts when as a country we’re utterly exhausted by the past few years especially.

👏👏👏👏👏

Absolutely this 100 times over.

I'll take honesty I don't want to hear over lies any day atm.

IClaudine · 21/07/2023 16:09

Oh look! It is But Corbyn's fault Labour failed to win Uxbridge.

I, too, welcome the youngest MP in the House. He will show enthusiasm and represent the younger generation for his area , badly needed. I found nasty Mercer's comments abhorrent, even the Barronnes said.. can't you be gracious in defeat?
He said he was... no he was rude patronising and insulting about someone younger than him.

TooBigForMyBoots · 21/07/2023 16:16

Thanks for the new thread @DuncinToffee.Thanks

Finally! Anyone would think he has been dragging his heels.
Now the Cabinet Office get to drag theirs.

Elodie09 · 21/07/2023 16:20

I think we might be in for a lot more of Tory Johnnie Mercer type comments belittling opposition candidates in a spiteful way.
I applaud the young ones who are prepared to engage in politics which over the last 13 years has become a vicious arena .
I truly hope the experienced MP's will look after them well and take great care of them.
They are our future.

Roussette · 21/07/2023 16:30

I agree Elodie. They are calling him 'the baby of the House*. Grin
