DD12 - being scammed by friend?

Hey, a bit of a wwyd!…and sorry, tried not to be too long but don’t want to drip feed! DD12 swims 4-5 times a week with a swim club. She & a friend have a locker that they share (we rent it on a yearly basis) so that we don’t have to worry about trailing kit around. In the locker they have their own stuff that they keep separately and a basket/bag of kit they don’t mind sharing. Friend was off for a week and in this time DD12 used a shampoo that was in the shared bag. It was in a supermarket own brand bottle. When friend returned they (and their parent) went nuts because DD had ‘stolen’ their expensive shampoo….apparently it’s a ‘designer’ brand that they had decanted into the own brand bottle and they deny leaving it in the shared section and claim dd took it on purpose (worth noting here it would not have served her hair type well in any way!). We have already stood our ground (it was ugly😬) and thought it had gone away but they’ve started demanding a replacement again after today’s training session. They want DD to give them £30!! Part of me thinks we should just give them the cash and never have dealings with them again but the other part of me is questioning what example that sets for DD - just acquiesce every time you’re accused of something wrongly?! It’s all bloody daft but has become very unpleasant which is very sad. Actually, don’t tell me what to do, just persuade me that this sort of bonkersness is rare!!

So now they’ve got to pay the full price for the rental of a locker over a tiny amount of shampoo. Talk about cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Don’t get sucked back in to locker sharing with them when the dust settles. Paying full price for a locker just for your daughter is worth it to avoid their drama.

£30??? I use expensive shampoo and it costs nowhere near that amount. I’d be inclined to call them a bunch of scammers and tell them to fuck off.

Even if their elaborate story about decanting it into a cheaper bottle is true (it’s not btw) it’s their mistake.

Thieving bitches.

That is what I would do. Talk about how scammers have "decided" that using a half ounce of shampoo equals a whole bottle and that is exactly how scammers and grifters act. How poor they must be if they need to try and scam a child out of thirty pounds. Wonder out loud what will be their next scam/grift.

But then, I am a believer that if you dish it out, you'd better be prepared to get it back many times worse.

To be honest the more I think about this, the more I think it’s less likely that they just randomly decided to try to scam a friend out of £30 and more likely that the shampoo wasn’t in the shared bag, the DD knew it was expensive and sneakily used it while the friend was away. It just makes more sense.

@Spud90 when you spent that much time thinking about a thread it’s a sign to take a break from the internet. At least 50% of what you read on MN will be made up, including that statistic Wink

How would she know it was expensive if it was in a cheap bottle?

determinedtomakethiswork · 29/06/2023 07:57

Who on earth would decant expensive shampoo into a cheaper bottle?

Well, it's possible the other friend has mentioned it especially since they claim that she did it on purpose. That suggests to me that they know she knew it was expensive or had asked to use it previously. Maybe she'd asked to use it before and the friend said no as it's expensive. Maybe her mum told her not to share the shampoo. It's just more realistic than them being bat shit crazy.

What an odd comment. I didn't say I'd spent all day thinking about it. I think about it when I read the comments. What's going on in your brain when you read comments? A clapping monkey?

Seriously? there are batshit stories of CF on here all the time, I dont see it as being outlandish at all. Many people ARE entitled and money grabbing, its hardly rare

Yes, this is one of the tamer stories!
There was another one this week where the poster booked and paid for flights for her cleaner (& her whole family!) for the past 2(?) years, she didn't want to do it anymore but didn't know how to tell her cleaner that.
I learn a lot on MN!

Can't you get them for defamation or whatever and get back that they're the thieves wanting a whole bottle when she used a cap full.

That still doesn't excuse the CFers for "demanding" 30 pounds to replace a 1/2 oz. of shampoo.

It's just as likely that the CFers' NVDD put the shampoo in the shared area and is scared to tell the truth since the CFers seem so unhinged.

Of course they are going to try and claim it was on purpose. They want that 30 pounds, so they won't dare to take under advisement that their little princess could be lying.

No matter HOW it happened. CFers expecting 30 pounds for a 1/2 oz use of shampoo IS batshit crazy/scammy/disgusting/rude and about 15 other descriptive terms.

Nooneknowswhatgoesonbehindcloseddoors · 02/07/2023 07:44

Okay...please don't be angry with me. Is your dd being honest about the shampoo having been in the shared bag?

Batalax · 02/07/2023 07:48

How was it resolved op?

escript · 02/07/2023 09:44

OP didn't return after day one - a week ago.

Maybe. As other PP have said, some shampoos can be around £100 for a litre. The DD goes swimming 4-5 times weekly, if the friend was on holiday for 1 week and she's used it every swim, depending on how long the DD's hair is, she could have used £30 worth or close to.
However, as I said before, if they can afford to spend that much on shampoo for a 12 year old, I can't imagine why they're kicking up this much of a fuss over £30. Maybe it's just the principle.

In my opinion, it's hard to say whether they are BU without more information which it doesn't seem like we will get.
