How many houses have you lived in?

We were discussing my brothers new house this weekend, he is in his 50's and is just about to move into his 17th house, he has lived in a few different countries on 4 different continents.

By contrast my sister who is 60 has lived in 2, our childhood home and the one she bought with her DH when they married.

I'm the oldest and have lived in 8 houses but all within 30 miles of each other.

My brother has moved around for work and has certainly had more life adventures than me or my sister.

Just being nosey wondering how far others have moved from home, how many times and has it enhanced your life?

22 houses across 6 countries, I'm 50. I may be missing one or two.

Many of those were during a relatively short period where I moved countries several times, and a few have been 6 month rentals while going through transitions. Since I've had children I've only really lived in one house properly, now in another, although we had a few 6 month intervals in others. So not quite as without a sense of a home as that would suggest. I would say I only had 4 or 5 proper places which I would have considered homes, the others were very much temporary.

15, 5 of them abroad, 3 different countries. However I’ve been in the last one for over 30 years now. M

One house all my childhood until I married a soldier, then 7 different homes in 10 years. Now own my own home and have lived here for 12 years.

I'm 50 and I've lived in 11 (all in the UK), lived in the same house since I was 30 though. Full detail (!)

  1. Hometown A - 15.5 years (childhood home)
  2. Still hometown but staying with friends of family - 0.75 years (lodging)
  3. As above but at weekends, different friends - 0.75 years (lodging)
  4. Village B - 331 miles from A - 2 years (sixth form childhood home)
  5. City C - 83 miles away from B and 305 miles from A - 1 year (Uni)
  6. City C - 1 year (uni)
  7. City C - 2 years (uni)
  8. City D - 135 miles from C, 190 miles from B and 210 miles from A - 6 months (uni)
  9. Town E - 5 miles from city D - 6 years (uni/first job)
  10. Town E - 1 year
  11. Town F - 315 miles from E and 105 miles from A - 20 years

I do sometimes wonder what would've happened if my parents didn't do this big move when in year 11, and whether I would still be living in my hometown. I think it enhanced my life - who knows though really.

11 if you include 2 student accommodations

ElmTree22 · 16/05/2023 18:31

3, 30s

echt · 16/05/2023 18:33

21, not counting student residences.

DramaAlpaca · 16/05/2023 18:33

Three family homes growing up.

Three homes with DH and our family.

Rentals as a student and young adult, six or seven maybe.

SaladRooney · 16/05/2023 18:37

Only one in my childhood (and my parents still live there), but 22 across five countries on three continents in my adult life. I'm 50. I like a move, a new culture, a new language. Though we'll probably stay where we are now until DS finishes his schooldays.

MaidOfSteel · 16/05/2023 18:38

Mid 50s. I've lived in 11 different homes, one of them overseas. I still don't feel I'm in my forever home yet.

kdramaqueen · 16/05/2023 18:44

21 houses. Moved around on three continents as an expat because of dh's job. Interestingly, both dc have overseas jobs too.

RandomUsernameHere · 16/05/2023 18:45

8 not including student rentals

shammalammadingdong · 16/05/2023 18:46

Couldn't even count. Wouldn't be any less than 50 anyway (I'm 46).

Chypre · 16/05/2023 18:48

Lived in 11 across 4 countries, about to move into a 12. Already know that won’t be “forever home” either :)

Joystir59 · 16/05/2023 18:50

I'm 65. I've lived in 24 different houses

fyn · 16/05/2023 18:52

I’m 31 and have lived in 17. Moved abroad and back as a child and am an army wife now though plus all of the student houses! We have just bought our first house and I don’t intend to move for a very long time 😅

mizu · 16/05/2023 18:54

50 years old and at least 20 different places. 4 of them in other countries.

Allthegoodusernamesareused · 16/05/2023 18:54

I'm in my mid-40's and in my 15th home. I'm included x2 student residences in that.

I hate moving house and never plan to do it again!

LindorDoubleChoc · 16/05/2023 18:57

5 houses before I was 18, Uni halls, then a shared house, then 5 flat shares over 9 years, then got married moved into rented house, another two rented houses with DH, bought house, bought another house.

11 houses and 5 flats and Uni halls x 1.

whenindoubtgotothelibrary · 16/05/2023 18:57

19 I think, 6 of them (consecutively!) owned, 4 of them childhood, two of them came with jobs overseas and the rest were rentals and flat shares more than 25 years ago.

I think I've got one more move in me to downsize when all the dc have left home ( now in my 50s)

Spookysnake · 16/05/2023 19:00

17 houses or flats in 5 countries over 54 years.

WeAllHaveWings · 16/05/2023 19:04

I am in my 50s and lived in 5.

3 childhood homes - first two I was under 5 years old, I don't remember the first

2 since I left parents home - my first flat, and current house

LT2 · 16/05/2023 19:19

Same as your sister for me - 2. Childhood home then first home as a couple. We do plan on upsizing in a few years as our family is growing!

Pickingmyselfup · 16/05/2023 19:26

I'm on my 10th...

1 as a baby (1 year)
1 growing up (23 years on and off)
3 student houses (3 years total)
2 house shares (1 year each)
1 in laws (1 year)
1 rented as an official adult (2 years)
Current house (9 years)

I estimate it being 12 over my life time if we manage to upside then downsize later in life. Its quite a lot of houses but the student places were in the same town and my rented and current house are only about 6 miles away from each other and our current town is where the shopping was for our rented house so it's no different really.

I'm quite happy in our area now and can't see us moving whilst the kids are small but I won't rule it out for the future.

Spottycarousel · 16/05/2023 19:40

8 houses
3 flats
1 student residence.

I'm happiest where I am now.

I'm early 40s.
