How many houses have you lived in?

quietheart · 16/05/2023 10:47

We were discussing my brothers new house this weekend, he is in his 50's and is just about to move into his 17th house, he has lived in a few different countries on 4 different continents.

By contrast my sister who is 60 has lived in 2, our childhood home and the one she bought with her DH when they married.

I'm the oldest and have lived in 8 houses but all within 30 miles of each other.

My brother has moved around for work and has certainly had more life adventures than me or my sister.

Just being nosey wondering how far others have moved from home, how many times and has it enhanced your life?

4 with my parents
4 as a student
10 overseas in 5 countries (a cumulative 14 years).
4 as an owner occupier in the UK. Almost 8 years in the latest and current one (my own personal record).
That’s 30.
I’m 53.

Beenaboutabit · 16/05/2023 12:16

Sorry, it’s 22

fjgytuyg · 16/05/2023 12:17

do you mean owned (1) or ever i.e. inc childhood and rentals? in which case i've lived in 4 as a child, then 18 as an adult and we are just about to move again so 22 in total......no idea where that's a lot or not. But am in my mid-40s, lived in six countries so there's been a lot of living and a lot of moving.

SquashPenguin · 16/05/2023 12:18

17 and I’m 37.

riotlady · 16/05/2023 12:18

6 as a child (hated that we moved so many times!)
4 as a student, if we include halls
1 with my ex-boyfriend’s family
2 as an adult (rented then bought with my husband)

So 13 houses ranging from Aberdeen to Surrey and I’m 30. I’ve moved every 2.3 years throughout my life on average!

Bargellobitch · 16/05/2023 12:22

16 I'm 37

Mumof1andacat · 16/05/2023 12:24

2...childhood home and my current house which I've been in for 16 years. No uni, flats or flat shares.

InvincibleInvisibility · 16/05/2023 12:25

OP - I left the UK permanently when I was 20 and won't go back unless exceptional circumstances.

We love visiting but "home" is now in a different country

BelindaBears · 16/05/2023 12:26

9 including childhood homes. Lower than a lot of people I know as I got married and bought house with DH in mid 20s so didn’t have many years of moving between rental properties.

2 childhood homes
5 uni/first job rentals
2 owned

I would like to stay in the house I’m in now forever, moving is stressful and unsettling for me.

bussteward · 16/05/2023 12:26

I’m 41, and 17 homes.

3 childhood homes, plus 1 year living with family elsewhere.
4 student residences.
3 London houseshares
3 homes in quick succession after moving in with a bad’un
3 owned homes including the one I’m in now, which is forever unless I win euromillions - but if I did I’d only go up the road 40 yards to the big houses

MandyMotherOfBrian · 16/05/2023 12:26

I'm in my eleventh home, 51. But I also lived abroad, moving around a bit, for years so probably add on another five.

NC4tonight · 16/05/2023 12:29

44 and on my 10th house. Soon to be 11.

2 childhood, one was my student flat, then 8 as a partner/wife to a military man - now separated.

My 11th will be my very own, can't wait!

CatsOnTheChair · 16/05/2023 12:29

14 - in 2 different countries.
Don't remember the first one - moved out when I was 2.

Not a chance I'd have lived permanently in country 2 - infact it was me who pushed to come home. DH has been offered a crazy amount to go back, and the kids and I have unanimously said he'd be going alone if he accepts.

ThreeRingCircus · 16/05/2023 12:34

I'm 35 and am currently living in my 10th house.

I lived in the same house from birth to when I went to university, about 150 miles away from where I'd grown up.

Then four different rentals during my university years.

Then after university I moved another 200 miles away for work and lived in two different rented houses.

Then rented a house with my now DH.

Then DH and I bought our first house together.

Then had two DDs and needed to move out of our 2 bed so bought the house we live in now.

Pahpahpotato · 16/05/2023 12:39

4, I’m nearly 30. Technically 3 houses and a static caravan, but that’s being picky.

CarpeDiem83 · 16/05/2023 12:40

I'm 39, lived in 9 places in total:

1 X childhood home
4 X uni halls/shared houses
1 X shared house post uni
1 X rented flat
2 x houses with DH (and now DD)

Hopefully won't be adding to that number for a long time!

ShippingNews · 16/05/2023 12:41

19 in two countries - I was a Navy child and an Army wife , then divorced and have had 3 homes with DH. I live 12'000 miles from my home town. I'm 63.

My SIL has lived in 1 ! Born there, and when she got married she bought her family home from her parents.

TeddyBeans · 16/05/2023 12:43

7 houses, 32 years old and 10 miles from where I grew up

BingandSulaandFlop · 16/05/2023 12:45

I'm on number 11 at age 37.

3 childhood homes
3 student properties (if halls of residence counts)
4 rentals
And finally bought my first home 5 years ago.

I hate packing. After my last childhood move I can remember my DF saying that he wasn't moving again until he was the one in a box. I understand what he meant now 🤣

Delphigirl · 16/05/2023 12:45

13 excluding uni and second houses/flats eg holiday houses, flats I’ve had at the same time as the house I’ve actually lived in

CouldIHaveThatInEnglishPlease · 16/05/2023 12:46

As a child 4 homes.
as an adult 3 homes.
so 7 in total, I’m 37

Delphigirl · 16/05/2023 12:46

That’s in 3 countries

aintnospringchicken · 16/05/2023 12:47

4 in total. 2 childhood and 2 since getting married

BenCoopersSupportWren · 16/05/2023 12:50

50s, lived in 8 houses / flats all in the UK but various areas. Two with parents, three rented (one of which I later bought), two more bought including the one I live in now, one a free summer flat-sitting arrangement for a few months when I was about 19/20.

quietheart · 16/05/2023 12:54

Wow @TomatoSandwiches did you ever get the chance to unpack properly?

@fjgytuyg 6 countries sounds interesting though.
